Who's Built a Model A Roadster Out of a Coupe?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 63CadGuy, Feb 15, 2009.

  1. I tried searching and couldn't find anything. I thought I remember someone doing it. The only reason I ask is I can buy a '28-'29 Coupe body with the top gone and was wondering how hard it would be to make one into a roadster? If anyone has done it or if anyone has pics of one that was converted could you post them up, thanks. Just curious as to what is involved (besides a lot of work).

You will end up (have) with a butchered coupe. Not the same as a roadster.

not going to be the same at all, you'd be able to tell it wasn't a roadster to begin with. Personally, I'd p*** on it.

Id pick it up and think about what to do with it for a while, ive seen a couple nice looking ones, but a lot of hacked coupsters too. Have you thought about just getting it and then trying to find a roof to peice back on it? then maybe you can trade it for a roadster body if you want a roadster?

There's nothing wrong a coupster... as long as it isn't trying to hard to be a roadster.

I love mine. Plus they have more room inside!

Sorry, this is the only pic I have that shows the area where the top has been. Hope it helps.

  14. I did and I narrowed the door at the top I don't like the big flat door top. If you search under my name for post started by me you will find photos of it. I did it that way as I was putting on a top and wanted the top of the doors even with the back of the body. I took the window tops and used them for the top of my doors that gave them the rounded look. Many people now try to figure out what it is as I used all stock body parts and it all blends in. The car has come a long way now but I don't own it any longer, I needed money. What I want to say is narrow the door it will look 99% better.

  16. If you are looking to amaze and delight all of the "traditional police" don't do it. If you are looking for a fun roadster that 95% of people won't know the difference about, then go ahead and do it. Roadsters are fun. You probably aren't going to win any concourse shows, but you won't be able to get the grin off your face either.---Brian

Brian should know. He made his roadster pickup out of a 2-Door. And you know how awesome I think your car is Brian.:D

There is nothing "non-traditional" about a coupe with the top cut off. Thousands of coupes had the tops cut off in the 50's and 60s, many with very nice results. It seems like a case of someone changing what they have to make it more what they want. Sounds like Hot Rodding to me.
Having said that, I would hate to see someone cut the top off a really nice coupe.

    Good luck with your coupester.

  22. I have never seen one that looked good. Every one I have seen looked terrible. The doors and cowl are too bulky compared to a real roadster. I ***ume with enough time, money and talent you might make something look reasonable. Go to a national event of NSRA and you will see what I mean.

Why build a steel roadster out of a coupe when you can just by a fibergl*** roadster body... Most of the poeple here would say both are fake, and you can enjoy the piss out of either one!

  24. Funny you should say that, I just saw someone on Craigslist selling the roof off of a coupe, I'd have to find it again, maybe it wasn't the whole roof. I did think about it before also and didn't think someone would hack the roof off of a coupe for any reason that's why I was thinking the coupester might be the way to go.

  25. I can't afford the price of a fibergl*** roadster is one big reason. I'm not looking to build a coupester really, but in my search for a coupe or sedan I came across this coupe body with the top chopped off at a price that fit in my budget. I knew that they didn't look as good as a true coupe, but wanted to see if they looked good at all to me and what was involved in making one look good. Thanks for the posts so far, if anyone else has anything to post I love to see what you have or hear what you have to say on the subject, thanks.

I am helping a buddy of mine build one right now. Yeah, ok we know its not a "real" roadster but who gives a ****..... Is it gonna be fast? yeah! Is it gonna be fun? **** yeah! There are some hurdles to overcome to get it together, can't really buy certain parts to fit. but definately doable

The windshield post are Model A roadster posts cut down at the bottom. There is a small steel post that sticks up out of the top of the cowl that is drilled and tapped, and goes inside the bottom of the posts (they are hidden) with two 5/16 machined screws on each post. The actual windshield frame is steel channel welded together. With this setup, the windshield still flips open like its suppossed to.
