i heard childers one night at huntsville speedway tell l.d.ottinger to go buy some parts of the track parts truck,his words,"you can't spend it as fast as i make it,get what you need". l.d. also won lms national championship in the coal car. i think

 

Here's a photo of Jody making a pit stop in that car in the '74 Atlanta 500.

This track is the 1/2 mile track that was the Ashville-Weaverville Speedway in North Carolina on March 31,1957. The #87 of Buck Baker starting third would be the winner that day,

 

Here are a few Alabama boys at Georgia International Speedway in Jefferson, GA.
#88 is Donnie Allison, #23 is Davey Allison, #24 is Mike Harmon, and #31 is Steve Grissom, the #14 in the background of the Davey Allison photo is Freddy Fryer.

 

Thanks, JLS. I got an e-mail from somebody who said he thought it was Asheville-Weaverville, so I'm glad to hear that so I can title it.

Right now I'm working with old friends to try to get a website started up for the old Fairgrounds Motor Speedway in Louisville, or at least a site about racing in the Louisville area. All you guys are doing a great job of keeping the historic photos coming, and it's fun. I'll get back into it when I locate more photos.

No Problem. I love the old days when cars looked like cars. If you want, I can ID everyone in the photo if ya'll dont have that.

 

Even the guy with his kid running down the bank? Seriously, that would be neat.

 

I'm afraid I cant tell you who the guy and the kid are, but it would be interesting to know.

Don't think this one has been posted before. Another from Asheville-Weaverville, this one in 1955...

 

Jimmy Hendrickson started at Freeport Speedway but then went on to make Islip his home track. He was one of the winningest drivers there, second only to Al D'Angelo. After the Islip track promoter Larry Mendelson died Hendrickson went to Wall Stadium where he also became track champion.
He ran the X3, the 141 and the #56 sponsored by Hyde Park Collision and ALRAY. Though the '60 Chevy shows Budd Olsen on the roof, I believe that is the car he bought off Jim Reed and drove at Daytona in 1961. Unfortunately the car was wrecked finishing 10th in the 125 qualifier.

 

Keep that old stuff coming, I sure enjoy it.

My stuff isn't quite as old as some that is being posted but I will do what I can.

This is a composit of Donnie Allison at Atlanta. Photos have 1979 on the back but I'm not sure they weren't shot earlier and reprinted.

 

This one is from 1993...it is a 1965 Oldsmobile F-85. The car was turned into a hobby style Street Stock racer in 1990 and we still race it sporadically today. Track is Middletown NY Orange County Fair Speedway 5/8 mile hard clay track.

 

ARCA (then MARC) at Lancaster NY in 1963. No. 87 Danny Byrd in a former Holman-Moody Starlift (62 Galaxie with a 61 Starliner top), No. 27 Don Sawyer, No. 29 Earl Balmer, No. 2 Dick Freeman.

Looks like a 1935 or 36 Chevy flat back 2 door sedan body. Any idea what color and number this poor old car carried?....might be able to find a picture from back in the day.

That shot was taken at the museum at Darlington / or Talladega - sorry I don't remember which about 35 / 40 years ago!

 

My brother worked at Cajon before it closed and I still have a hat and decal from the 2004 season. Too bad tracks like that are being lost.

 

Now you're talkin! Tom Jones didn't have anything on this "Zero Hero".

 

Do you know BIG VIC that used to help Trickle?

 

That Olds actually looks like a real car . Is it hard to form that pre-painted aluminum into those shapes?

Oh, yes. Vic Getzloff was a good friend, also. A fun-loving guy when we weren't racing.

One day at IRP, we were having a tire roll relay race, with the driver to start, then the tire would be handed off in order to five pit crew members at various stages around the track.

Trickle said at the drivers' meeting that Vic was his anchor man, and asked, "Victor wants to know if he can throw the tire to the start-finish line."

Dang, there's another story for my "Driven to the Past" column.

 

i believe it was at oxford plains in maine that bobby won his first nascar cup type race.....i was there.....lol
