I'll tell ya something that's you aint gonna beleive.
I too couldn't decide between a regular skirt or bubbles on my "49"
So I figured fuck it. I have a bubble on the passanger side and a flaire bottom Winfield on the drivers side.
No one ever noticed it, unless I mention it.

  8. Sombreros and '57 Caddy caps cover the rim. Most caps don't. They sit on the inside lip of the wheel.
NO! on the bubble skirts!!! I've NEVER seen a Merc with bubble skirts that looked good! (at least not on the West Coast!) Just kidding...you need to make it yours.

I looked at a old MERC photo album of
mine and was surprised there was 18 photos
of Mercs with bubble skirts on them.
    Someone must have liked them

    North/South Carolina
    etc,etc,etc....LOL!!!

  12. Bob I am seeing 48-53 Sombrero combos showing some wheel, but Jeff's car does not. I don't like the '57's.

Hey Rik, I know you still check out this thread, how about the '53 Studebaker caps like on the later Bettancourt redo? I think those look cool?

I'm not positive and I haven't used them, but I think early Chevy like 49-52 rings work great for flush mount headlights too. And a hell of alot cheaper.

Good stuff dood! Its almost time for some color! You still going with black?

  22. Black is the plan but I'm as indecisive as my son around Thomas trains at Toys R' Us. A dark gray/graphite came to mind all of a sudden too.

I'm back to wanting '52 merc repop headlight bezels, who's got a set of the $98 ones from Gene Winfield or Gary @ Nightprowlers? They are both out of stock for 2-3 weeks.

so what taillights did you decide to go with?

  24. 1953 Chrysler/Packard, inspired by Flamedabone. I also used some of the factory sheetmetal from a donor car that I got from Flat Top Bob. I got the Hudson fuel filler door from him too.

I'm kinda surprised to have a gas door on it. It's coming along nice.

  27. After I got the car, I'd put gas in it, spill a little in the trunk and the smell never went away. I couldn't wait to put an external fuel door back on.

  28. Looking great Jon!

I'll stand with ya and say I like bubble skirts. Hey hate me, guys, it's ok....I've never been a "cool kid" and I doubt I'll start now. ;) LOL. Seriously, though, I like bubbles and have entertained the idea of putting a set on mine for now until the day I redo it. Mine's got warped, yucky fiberglass 51 copies on it now and they gotta go. Eventually, it will get flush fit 51 steel skirts, but I thought for now, what the hey, I could play around a bit and mess with some of the different stuff I like until the eventual tear down and redo.

Betcha a dollar if you put bubbles on it, most everyone will still tell ya they like how it turned out. LOL.

  29. I'm nuts, so I will use the '51 skirts I have but I found some metal bubble skirts that I'd like to buy in the near future:
