I guess i spoke too soon once again. I knew nothing about the house for Crocky, etc. Sorry about that; it does seem that Tony is even a better person than i thought! I just meant that A.J. spent his own money to try and save races such as the Hoosier 100, among others.
We are very lucky to have both these guys!

Yes Big Wheel great racing movie for it time..........
Billy Coy is a tough Irish lad with dreams of making it big and a taste for trouble. The fearless Billy claws his way up the racing ladder, disregarding the consequences of his reckless drinking and womanizing. Uncle Red Stanley (Thomas Mitchell) supports Billy all the way to the glory of the Indianapolis 500, where the furious thrills of speed and alcohol threaten to derail Billy's raceway ambitions.

The Big Wheel spins a pulse-quickening racing adventure with action-packed photography, anchored by first rate performances from Mickey Rooney and Thomas Mitchell.

YES!! Any parts you may need to put it back to how it was when Sammy drove it, WILL NEVER GET ANY CHEAPER AND MORE AVAILIBLE THAN THEY ARE RIGHT NOW!!!

At least: Research it, collect all the pictures and literature you can, get all the correct parts, ASSEMBLE it and throw a cover over it. (Parts in boxes get away.. you need to assemble it!)

HOT DAMN!! Indybigjohn! nothing like a color shot of Horn's Babe to make my day! THANKS!!

Hey Indybigjohn.. I got a Dick Wallen DVD that follows USAC sprints from around 1955 to 1970 In a bunch a few shots there is a "stalky" guy with a classic flat top wearing a gleaming D-A Lubricants jacket. He's in the infield and in front of the camera view a couple times.. IS THAT YOU?

  8. I don't think they're really in competition with each other on this issue.

Spike- Anybody who saves the Hoosier Hundred is tops in my book! I have got to get up there for one of those races before some idiot decides to end it altogether!

It just may be. I'd like to see that. I was wearing that jacket when I helped out Chuck Arnold.

Thanks for the kind words, Josh.

stewart is an awesome individual. he has done a lot of stuff behind the scenes that most will never know. i hope someday the people tht bad mouth him will get to see firsthand what he does for the world of racing and the people involved.

  13. After reading all these many years how meticulous Ted Horn was in both the building & racing his cars, I find it sort of strange that he is using a blue rear wheel. Yes, I know, that's called nit picking. ml9.

    Brian26,

    Thanks for the memories,
After working on an old midget all day and coming in the house the videos of the 50's reminded me of time spent with my dad listening to the Indy 500 on the radio. Now that was a special time.

    Josh....
Danny Kladis did the stunt driving for Gable in "To please...." I remember old pics they had from the set. I have my cousin checking, hopefully they didnt go in the estate sale. He may even remember something about the cars, I'll have my aunt ask next time she visits the home. It might be really informative, I hear his mind is still sharp at times...depending on how his meds are going.

Kladis did the blindfold thing at the joliet stadium too. He said he could listen to the echo of the exhaust against the wall to judge where he was, combined with counting while going straight.

While the 1950s are generally considered the begining of the "roadster era" at Indy, if you were to go back about 25 years to 1926 you would find this badass rig. The Eldridge Spl. powered by a Anzini (?) and steered by one W. Douglas Hawkes. I have to wonder if either Kurtis, Salih, Watson or Kuzma didn't have some of these pics filed away. ;)

Where oh where have they gone; the 50s and 60s Dirt Car pics that is? Some of the guys i knew back then i have no pics of.
How many of you knew Chuck Arnold? He sometimes stayed at our place when he was in here for Trenton, Langhorne, or Reading. We met him at a URC race at East Windsor, New Jersey. He was spectating, i was running that night and my wife met him in the stands. Of course, Chuck was quite the ladies man. lol. As i remember, Chuck worked for Champion Spark Plugs, speaking to High School kids. One time we went with Chuck to a USAC Sprint show at the Allentown Fair. Chuck had a ride in an ancient piece called the Ankeney Offy. He damn near got run over by Mario that day!
Anyway, after i broke my neck, we just sort of lost track of where Chuck was, and i heard a while back that he had passed on. The memories that this thread, especially the pics, brings back are priceless!!

I always like seeing EVM stuff. I wish I could find someone with an eight port head that they would be willing to loan to an exhibit for a while.
