I had a great time last night cruising Main street in Mesa. It was from Country Club on the west end to Mesa dr on the east end, just like the old days when I was there in the 70s. Saw some great cars of all kinds and heard a new surf band play too. I invited several to attend my Nostalgic show and drag and swap coming April 5. Did any else get to go and enjoy? There were a lot of cool cars there but, the coolest HAD to be the black '61 Starliner driving around with no hood! I could hardly blame him. It was powered by a SOHC 427! I wouldn't cover that motor up either. Steve <DIR>Hosting- 7th annual Nostalgic Show and Go! and swap. I only saw a woman in a '64 Chrysler cruising around when I was there... Oh, this was in December '98 by the way...
Glen, Last night was pretty busy, I would say several hundred cars were there. This was the first one I attended. Not sure why the one you attended had no one there. I plan to go again the next time one is planned. Steve <DIR>Hosting- 7th annual Nostalgic Show and Go! and swap. Yeah, that Starliner was something else. He was driving it like he stole it too. I was really amazed that the cops were so tolerent. Lots and lots of guys doing burnouts.. some of it a little wreckless considering how close people were standing. But it was fun too. I may have "left my mark" when I was there. I was in my 55 chevy. (pics of car in my HAMB album) What's with the old guy shooting flames out the hood of his car with zoomies pointing straight up? Last year he was making popcorn in the zoomies, it was hilarious! Here's a pic of the SOHC Starliner:
Did you go last October? They had something scheduled, then cancelled it. I think downtown Mesa really, really needs the business so they seem to be agressively scheduling the car cruise thing this year. It's the fourth Saturday of each month. Notice I said fourth Saturday, not the last Saturday. There's something like 3 months this year that have five Saturdays.
I didnt make this one but a buddy that did said this is gonna happen last saturday of every month. Is that the whole thruth and nuttin but????
I was out at the Chandler Car show Saturday morning but I had family come in from out of town and could not make the Mesa Cruise. Sounds cool and I wish I would have been able to attend. Steve, you are right, the Starliner is VERY cool.............Looking forward to the Pontiac Heaven and the Nostalgia show. I'll see ya in the swap meet............
Hey Kerry, I was at the Chandler show in the afternoon. One of my event sponsors, Chandler Speed Shop, had an open house. They are on Az ave just north of Chandler blvd. That is where I heard of the cruise, so I ended up going and was glad I did. After that night, I was hoping I had my Tempest AWB funny car finished. I plan to have the funny car streetable and the Mesa cruise would be perfect for it. "I was really amazed that the cops were so tolerent. Lots and lots of guys doing burnouts.. some of it a little wreckless considering how close people were standing." I agree. Things could have gotten out of hand real fast. I am sure there were some plain clothes cops there, had to be. I only saw one cop in a squad car the whole night. I'm not a fuddy duddy but, I don't want to see people get hurt either. If something happened and someone got hurt, that would shut the place down. "What's with the old guy shooting flames out the hood of his car with zoomies pointing straight up? Last year he was making popcorn in the zoomies, it was hilarious!" Yeah, I saw that too. It's not my thing but, the crowd really seemed to like it. more power to him. Maybe we can all get the Hambers together for March? Here is what i am building to do cruises and drag exhibitions with. Steve <DIR>Hosting- 7th annual Nostalgic Show and Go! and swap. Steve, I was at the Chandler Speed shop for a bit myself. Stopped in to have a look and see what they got going on there. Still wish I could have made it to the Cruise though. Is this a once a month thing ???
Thats Dennis, he owns DRT. Good guy for sure. He built that car just to mess around with. I pulled up next to him on Main and he lit the pipes up and I thought my arm hair was going to burn off. *******.
It's a once-a-month thing now. They didn't have a firm schedule last year and then cancelled at least one of the events late in 2008. I hope Mesa has got it figured out now- It sure would be nice to see this last. Downtown Mesa certainly needs the business. Anyway, as far as the schedule goes. It's the fourth Saturday of each month. NOT the last Saturday of each month, it's the fourth Saturday. January, May, August and October have five Saturdays in 2009. Show up on the last Saturday and it will be you and four street rods having a couple of tacos at Mangos. .
That would be awesome, count me in. I'll try to post up a reminder if someone doesn't beat me to it. The March date should be on the 28th. http://www.hotrodplanet.com/ http://www.hotrodplanet.com/uploads/SATURDAY_CRUISIN__FLYER.pdf and http://www.desertcruisers.com/index.php?stateid=AZ&cityid=Phoenix&linktype=Events&id=2377 .
