That really ****s...I consider your truck to be the HAMB posterchild for the 1957-60 F-100's, and it helped me get back on track with mine... Glad no one was injured, other than the obvious blow to your pocket book...
Wow reminds me of a young kid that used to work at my buddys service station. He was adjusting the valves on an Olds and it decided to go into gear. Took him and the car thru a heavy wood 12 ft. garage door and out into the alley. Except for some minor cuts he was fine, boy you talk about being lucky.
I had a friend leaning over the fender trying to figure out a binding problem on the new carb he just put on an old mustang. On one particularly enthusiastic romp on the throttle, it decided to drop into reverse and leave on it own. He stilll had the return spring in his hand as it burnt rubber accross the street lot, accross the front lawn of his neighbors, bouncing off his neighbors house, into his other neighbors house, and back again (a few times), through the fence and eventually into the pool in the backyard. I missed the actual event put was over there later that day, helping him take down the remains of a fence so a big tow truck could lift his stang out of the pool. Car was totalled. I understand that his insurance was not amused. Neither was his neighbor since his kids had been in the back yard minutes before the car went for a swim. Glad you just dinged the house and the truck...that stuff can be fixed pretty easy.
Glad the damage is confined to property only. Reminds me of an incident involving my Mom and my old POS 41 Ford truck. I was about 17 or so at the time. The 41 had a fairly hot SBC and a turbo trans. Truck was in her way, would start in any gear and she also had the gas pedal depressed when it started. No damage but tons of smoke, squealing tires and a really angry neighbor. I still snicker about it.
thanks guys, im glad i wasnt the only one to have this happen to. the more i sit and think about what happened my little boy could of seriously been injured. he was coming with me, i had just strapped his car seat in , he loves to ride in the big loud green truck. luckliy he was still inside with his mom. the transmission was a c4. i might be looking into new shifters, i dont know. this gives me a chance to fix things right. well, you live and learn. thanks again for all the great comments.
Too bad about your mishap. Great looking truck. Glad no one was hurt. It might have been way worse when you consider what could have happened. Good luck from this point on.
Sorry to hear about your truck. I love this truck, it is the background picture on my computer, as my 60 is a long way from being as nice as yours. I hope it will look as good when it is on the road.
Holy cow. Thats scarry - especially with a 3 yr old running around. Just the thought of that makes my heart stop.
Good to know you,your kid and no-one was hurt. You can always repair the truck. I replaced the shift detent plate in my Tbird after having it pop out of park with me in the car.Best $30 I've spent on the car.
Sorry to hear about your misadventure, but glad your son was still inside! I really like your truck and hope you can repair the damage and continue crusing and having fun with it. Sold my '60 several years ago and have missed ever since. saw yours and it made my jones worse...been lookin'. Anyhow, good luck fixing the damage...I would probably ****can that shifter too!

Dude I hate C4s for that one reason. I have never owned one that doesnt want to skip into reverse all the time. I was trying to talk to some chick in college (I was 18 I guess, had a really nice red 66 Mustang) had it idling in park, all the sudden the exhaust sound goes lower and starts getting quieter. I must have looked soooo cool reverse Luke-Dukin' it into the car, legs hangin out jamming the shifter into park. Long story short nobody was hurt, but I didn't get her number either.

As a kid I remember my dad running after the van down a hill, he slipped on the wet lawn and broke his hip!!! carzy, good thing no one was hurt in your case...the things we do to save are heaps!
C4 Eh? Hmm. In the mid 90's I was at the NSRA mid-America Nationals with my 36 Ford (302/C4). In the hotel parking lot, the car was running in Park while I rearranged a few things. The car jumped into reverse. I ran after it tripped when I tried to get in. I hung on to the door as the car dragged me through a flower bed full of rose bushes. A really big guy then came running up and helped me stop the car about 10 feet short of a building. The door and door hinge were badly bent. Worse yet, I got blood poisoning from the junk that got into the cuts on my legs!
Isn't this sorta like how Johnny Carson's kid was killed? It's just a car...I know its easy for me to say since it isn't *MY* car...but I'm glad you're alright and nobody got hurt
His son was in a 4x4 (not sure of make) on a fire road near Highway 1. He got distracted and it went off a cliff if I remember correctly. As for the Ford's slipping into reverse thing. Every Ford i've had between '64 and '69, whether it be F100, F250 or Mustang has slipped into reverse on it's own. When I have to work on one when it's running, I have someone in the car just as extra insurance. I've had to chase down more than one old Ford. Most of them had C4's, but a few of the trucks had FMX's, or the predecessor to the C6. With the exception of one, they all clicked into park well and had good linkage. I dunno...
Good reason to stick with manual transmissions. That's why we have left legs, to work the clutch with.
I agree with you on that. I try to get rid of every automatic vehicle I get as quickly as possible. Or convert it over. Of course I say that and i've got 2 automatic cars that I don't plan on converting or selling... hmmm... Autos do have their perks though.
I have a friend that tried to run and jump in his run away street rod ,running board brackets tripped him and the car ran him over.He survived but had so many internal injuries it altered his whole life. ( That really ****s )about your truck but at least no one was hurt ,especially your son. Cars can be fixed or replaced ,People cant. OH yea nice truck!
Damn............looks like a pretty good argument for an E brake. Yeah, mine doesn't work either! Note to self, fix e brake! Glad no one was hurt.
Glad nobody was hurt and sorry about your ride. People generally take the parking brake for granted in an automatic car. I've had a couple of runaway incidents too, all of it was my stupidity. While I was putting a new 454 in my Jimmy and using a remote starter switch to adjust the valves (forgot to unhook the coil) the engine fired on high idle in Drive. The neutral safety switch had been previously emergency byp***ed and was never repaired. The truck drove off the ramps, smashed the workbench and knocked the garage back wall off of the foundation. Sure glad I was standing to the side. Another time my work truck with a worn out Turbo-350 would take a while to engage in reverse when cold.... Leaving for work... throw it in Reverse... start thinking about other things... OOPS... forgot my hot chocolate... go back in the house... talk to my wife for a few... go back outside.... no truck... but I can faintly hear it running... phone rings... wife says it's the neighbor a couple doors down... my truck is in his front yard backed up to a fence with nobody driving it.... Last episode happened to my best friend's wife a couple of weeks ago: While leaving her property she hears the back window hatch rattling, she stopped, threw trans in neutral, went around and closed the hatch. Evidentally closing it knocked the trans in Drive. Her grandson is in the car so she chases it. It's dragging her and shes trying to reach the brake pedal with her hand. The back tire caught her foot, ran over the length of her leg, then her torso (breaking 4 ribs), ran up on one arm and used her head for a parking block. The bruise on her leg was so bad it caused the skin to die, so she's going through skin grafts right now. Luckily it was a muddy surface or she'd probably be dead.
I had an '85 Mustang GT with an automatic. Backed my ski boat down the ramp with it one day, put it in park, set the e-brake, got into the boat and started it up. Just as I backed off of the trailer and got almost to the dock I saw the reverse lights come on. Down went the 'stang.
Sorry to hear about your accident that looks like a sweet truck!Don't be in a rush to blame the shifter those damn Ford trannies been shifting themselves into reverse for many years.The head mechanic/Owner of the Shell station I worked at in the mid 70s had a Ford wagon hooked up the the oscilloscope at fast idle hanging over the fender tuning it when it went into reverse so had that the hood dropped on him closing him in on top of the engine .He was hanging out from the lower waist down.The car backed out into the yard with the mechanic under the hood and towing the entire diagnostic center with it,It luckilly hit the end of the pump island and one of those big concrete filled pipes that stop folks from hitting the pumps because 20 feet farther was the main highway into town .Luckilly other than the fan removing one of his shirt sleeves he didn't get hurt.He called Ford and told them what happened and they said he left it in reverse!A few months later the "stuff" hit the fan about Fords doing this and their "fix" was to put a decal on the speedo that said this car may shift into reverse unattended !
