Was awarded this gem just last Tuesday night...

My buddy is lookin for a full pressure 235 for his 46 Chevy truck. He is told about a Craigslist ad from another buddy of ours. Here it is :

    1958 chevolet 235 engine - $500 (middleburg)

this engine was removed from a 1958 corvette. it is the blue flame edition. this same motor was used in several applications. i can start it for you to hear. call terry 291-4529

Needless to say ol Terry must not have done too much research on the "chevolet" engine since the last Vette to have a straight 6 was in 55 and even then, that year only had 7 Vettes with straight 6's as the 265 V8 was put in all the rest of em. Anyway, my buddy and I went to check it out.

The engine is sitting on some wood in his backyard, under a tarp, lookin more than just a little rough. Ol Terry goes on and on about how well it ran "a few years ago" and how they pulled it outa the Vette and blah, blah, blah. I say the ad said we could here it run and he and his buddy deny that the ad said that, but he would get a jumpbox and turn it over for us. While he was gone we looked up the numbers on the engine (ya gotta always bring yer refference books!) and it comes up to be a 56 truck engine.

He comes back sayin that the ad does say he can start is so he poceeds to hook up the box and dribble a few drops of what I thought was starter fluid into the carb. And I mean drops, not spray... hell it wouldn't have been enough to start an engine that was just running!! LOL But, I honestly wasn't payin any attention anymore as I knew he was full of shit, but figured we'd see if he would actually try to start it. Of course, it didn't start so we politely thanked him for his time and headed out.

My buddy and I are both laughin our asses off before we even got out of the guys driveway and he says to me that the guy was dribbling brake cleaner into the top of the carb, not starting fluid! For some reason, going to look at old car parts just about always turns out to be a funny story to tell to freinds later on.

  2. local guy was always bustin my balls to run his bone stock ford lightin truck against my blown vega wagon...400 40 over, 582 with 331 duration, pushing 8:25 compression with 492 angle plug heads heads....ot for sure, but i could air the tires down to 20 psi and yank the front tires about 4 inches..non cheater regular dot tires......2480 total weight with glass tilt front end full moly cage and me in it....always ball bustin, but every time i said to fire it up , it was either too hot and needed to cool ( yeah a stock motor getting hot!!) or he didn't feel like riskin a ticket...5 years of the fat fuck and his mouth....

Good stuff here. Did anyone mention Springsteen singing about his "396 with fuelie heads"?

Best one I heard was about me. I don't talk about cars to anyone I don't know well to avoid this kind of BS, and I don't wear car or motorcycle T-Shirts usually so not many people know what I do. So one night at my favorite watering hole this BS specialist (Truck driver, all belt buckle and boots and chain wallet, biggest belly in the place. Local nickname for him was Bullshit Kevin.) starts telling his buddies about this baddass Harley and the guy who owns it after one of them says he heard about it. He described it pretty well, had to be mine, how many other candy red turbocharged street/strip Shovelheads could there have been in my town without me knowing about it, he had my last name right and it's not common but he had my first name wrong. BS'r described the bike in question to be the next thing to rocket science and frightening to behold in person, continued on to elaborate how the owner was a REALLY good friend of his, even though he was a member of an outlaw biker club and spent time for murder, etc, etc, and was a scary dude not to be trifled with etc, etc. All this took place with me listening over Mr BS's shoulder watching the listener's expressions of wrapt attention.

When he was through, I nudged him and said 'Hey Kevin' and held out my hand. He turned and looked puzzled, looked at my hand and up at me and slowly took it. I shook it and said "That's my bike you're talking about". His eyes got really big and he shouted "No it's not! No it's not!" " It can't be!" I convinced him it was, he turned and shot out of the bar like the devil was after him. He didn't get within 10 feet of me for about 3 years after that.

I'm gasing up my truck in the nearest gas station when the kid working there sees the Bonneville particapent decals on the back window and askes me if I have been to the salt. I say yes and he starts telling me all about Bonneville and the cars. I don't know the kid so I ask him if he has actually been there. Yes he says "I went with Rich Fox the year he set the record." "But I'm Rich Fox." was my answer. "No you can't be." says he. I point out he has my credit card in hand with my name on it. Maybe there are two Rich Fox's " he says. At last he has to give up and admit he knows my neighbors kid and has heard of me from him.

  7. I was just thinkin...another one I used to get was, Chevy don't make no 302 son. A 302's a Ford motor.

    Woops, wrong thread.

Was it a '51 Ford Victoria?
Might have been my old lady......

  11. I hope you're smiling when you say that, Pal. (grin)

Seriously though, my point is that every now and then one or two of those far fetched tales might have actually happened.

    Like the World's Fastest Indian.

Like Buddy Ingersol, who lives right down the road from here, who used to race a turbo Pinto, who took a little V6 turbo Buick and beat a lot of really big names with it in Pro Stock until they outlawed the car (the Buick). He made the covers of many magazines for that one. Today you regularly see the Barry Grant Pro Stock race cars and truck parked by Buddy's little hole-in-the-wall metal pole barn when they often stop in between races.

Like Smokey and so many others who every now and then will turn the world upside down for a moment. Most of the really notable ones were ordinary folks till they made a splash.

OK, let's get back to the really silly ones-
like the song LITTLE GTO "... it beats the Gassers and the rail jobs..."
    what were they smokin??

In all fairness, many many people have no way to figure out which tales are plausable and which are not.

Some friends talked me into watching the movie "Fast and Furious". I only lasted for a while.
It was all I could do to force myself not to jump up and leave the room shaking my head and laughing. A half-minute drag race and they are still trying hard to make the cars giddyup.?

Bonneville 2006 we pulled into the pits, and began to unload our car. A guy running a f/gmr is pitted next to us. He tells us that he has the record in his class at 196 and intends on breaking his own record. I raised an eyebrow" the F/gmr record was set by the bean bandits in 04 or 05 at 157" He replies "How would you know the F/gmr record off of the top of your head?". I point to my car being uncovered a F/gmr that we were running for the first time. He walked off in a huff. We had a blast that week. We failed to run on the record(only managed 136mph), but we learned a lot. A fellow racer informed us that the guy was famous for his BS. When I see the guy at speed week I can only shake my head.

In high school I had a '58 Merc with a 383 engine in. It wasn't fast and used a lot of gas but it was a nice car. I had dozens of "experts" tell me that only Mopars had 383 engines and mine must be something else. I now work with a guy who swears his family had a stock 68 Ford Galaxie that would do 150 miles and hour and "the highway patrol would borrow it to chase down really fast speeders". I asked him once if the "speeder" didn't usually get away by the time the cops drove to his house and asked his dad if they could "borrow" the family car and run the crap out it. Funny thing is that other than this story he keeps telling he is a pretty good guy. Hell, he's told it so many times I'm starting to believe it. :)

  22. WOW... We have a winner...!!!!!

    "NOBODY CAN TOP THIS ONE"....!!!!!

Praying for my buddy to be Saved!;)

  23. could it be that his 350 is now a 383 because HE is a stroker??

Iv been told that story as well!

Had my Nash at a show ( as incomplete, and up on my flatbed ).
" i had a car like that in highschool!"
    yea?
" but mine was the V8 model that ford made "
Why are you talking to me?

    Also...
Thats a neat car, i know where theres one like it sitting in a field up by lake ( where i got my car...) tapps. Buddy of mine got the car though, and he's restoring it, with a big block and blah blah blah...

    me.

Actually, this is the car that was sitting up there, and theres no others around here that i know of.

    Him.

Must be a different one then

    Me.

Sure it is, im gonna go have a burger

Also, i got in an arguement with an old man one time that the biggest the flathead was ever made was 239 cid. He didnt believe that Mercs had a 255 in em, and lincolns had even bigger, and that lincoln made a v12 flathead.

actually learned recently that these guys are referring to their Heaton (eaton) blower that evidently suffers from heatsoak. back to back runs on the street and they get slower and slower and slower as the intake charge just keeps getting hotter. Ask him if he's gonna hang out for a bit with you guys and then hit him up for a run once she's cooled, lol

Had Jake the Striper put this on the back of my Zipper Lakester in 2000. Sign on the windshield says car is powered with a 1931 Model engine. Can't count the number of people who ask if you still can buy the engine. So, I tell 'em that Ford makes a limited number of Model A crate motors every year. Ford guy at Goodguys Del Mar finds me and proceeds to tell me that my story about Model A crate motors doesn't sit well with them! Seems a few people went to the Ford Racing trailer asking the price of Model A crate motors!

The best one Ive heard was actually from my wife Dana at the Syracuse Nats a few years ago when we brought my own 56 Chevy. She had some yokul believing SHE built the car because they all ask the same stupid questions and she knows the answer to each one.

Guy was a dumb ass- we were actualy all sitting there laughing right in front of him when she was doing her thing....:D

Man this is some funny shit on here.LOL. I sold a custom truck to a guy out of state. He actually sent me a newspaper article promoting the Detroit Autorama bragging (with photos of him and truck) in detail how he designed and built the whole truck.Funny part he didn't even know what parts were used.Anyone that knows cars could see He made a fool of himself. LOL .

  29. I like the guys who're running a stroker motor cuz it's got long rods ... on a stock crank.

I'm guilty of passing along info on abandoned cars, cars in back yards and where a car might be found.

  30. I'm standing next to my C/SM `68 Camaro that I drove on the street.... a guy comes up to me and says, "Yup, I helped Mike Zarnock build this thing! I can't tell you how many hours we put into this car...."!
I just smiled and said cool..... He didn't even know I was Mike Zarnock....
