Yep,they run wild in New Zealand which is why our brothers are so protective of the sheep at night.

Kirk... Great photo's I've been waiting for your post, NZ is unreal we were there a few years back had a great time and like you met so many awesome people who love cars and know how to party , it was for me like a step back in time to the 60's just a better pace of life...:D

  5. Kirk- thanks for letting us visit NZ through your camera's eye. Absolutely FANTASTIC. I have one small favor to ask though. Would you please adopt a 67 year old elder statesman to take with you the next time you go? I promise I won't be too much trouble and I won't ask for a pony ride or any thing.
    Thanks again !
    Later,
    Dick

Wow...Thanks for the great coverage - you are living right!

  7. The luge kicks ass! I went on it several years back and I got air, like Kirk says you could injure yourself. Lucky the brakes work good. To clarify, the Haka is an ancient Maori war dance . The national rugby team (All Blacks) performs as a challenge to any team they play. Rugby is the national sport and you can bet all those kids play rugby. All black Haka link didn't work for me but I know there are many All black Hakas on You tube.

I thought it was sneaky Scotsmen in kilts?

  10. As a Scot (but not a sneaky one), I take offense to that :D!

    Kiwi Kev,

I thought that the Haka was done as a show of respect, not necessarily a challenge.

That only the South island, which isn't part of new Zealand proper. New Zealand consists of 4 Islands ,North Island, the really pretty one,The South island, cold and full of pregnant sheep,Stewart island ,don't know much about it except it's like NZ's Tasmania and West island. West island is the retirement home for Kiwi's but it's big hot empty place we all wish we could get away from sometimes.

Respect? Hardly,it was one of ancestors who first uttered Ka Mate Ka mate . Literally he had just jumped from behind a large rock and confronted an enemy and his son .He was saying to them in his haka
    I am dying, I'm dead!
    No, I'm alive, fully alive!
    a virile man
who can bring joy and peace!
    Together, side by side
We can make the sun shine!

Thats the final and more polite part of the haka. As many young warrior went into battle naked they would encounter a lot of emotions ,so Te Rauparaha,my ancestor, composed this haka to encourage his warriors and lessen any fears they may have.
Want to know the whole Haka?
    Adults only!
    Kikiki kakaka!
    Kikiki kakaka kau ana!
    Kei waniwania taku tara,
Kei tara wahia kei te rua i te kerokero!
    He pounga rahui te uira ka rarapa;
Ketekete kau ana, to peru kairiri:
    Mau au e koro e.

    Ka wehi au ka matakana.
Ko wai te tangata kia rere ure
    Tirohanga nga rua rerarera,
Nga rua kuri kakanui i raro?

    Ka mate! Ka mate!
    Ka ora! Ka ora!
    Tenei te tangata puhuruhuru
Nana nei i tiki mai whakawhiti te ra!
    Upane, ka upane!
    Whiti te ra!
    I'm jabbering and quivering,
    stuttering, shaking and naked!
    I'm brushed by your crotch
a cleft mound, a pulsating cavern!
    Forbidden mysteries are revealed;
banter and intimacy, your flushed face:
I am caught in your noose.

    I'm scared but fully alert.
Who is this man with a thrusting shaft
    investigating the hot moist depths,
the squirming pungent depths below? (It's me!)

    I am dying, I'm dead!
    No, I'm alive, fully alive!
    a virile man
who can bring joy and peace!
    Together, side by side
We can make the sun shine!

  16. Dirtynails,

Thanks for the translation and setting me straight- I was given a VERY watered down interpretation of the meaning some years back that does not do the history justice.

'The' haka is one of many hakas, it's Te Raupraha's and about him being hidden by a hairy guy in a kumera pit from persuers and certain death. It's not popular here where he murdered several hundred of the local Ngai Tahu, he was transported down for the raid by a sailing ship in exchange for a cargo of flax

  18. I always thought it meant...".We're getting ready to kick your ass." Anyway, back to Kirk's trip. Tell us some more stories Kirk. What does your lovely wife have to say about NZ?

Nice job on your trip, great pictures and captions.

  20. I have heard of those giant MOA's in the south island.
    Any pics?

    .

  21. Thanx Kirk for showing NZ the way we know it. It has great people, and the countryside is beautiful. Every time I head away on a business trip, I feel blessed to be able to enjoy the scenery and meet new people. The other plus is like being able to visit the Hot Rod shops that build some of our best cars (obviously briefly and never buying DVD's or decals or T shirts or magazines.... ;) )
Great to see the locals embracing the culture in the 'Naki as well. :)
    Thanx once again.
Really looking forward to The Blowout and The Nostalgias and meeting Denise when she drops by.

Ha, ha. last time our Club (North Shore Rod and Custom Club) went to the luge the only injuries suffered were a broken arm and a few ruined jackets. :D All in a days entertainment.

Oh, the 'big kitty's' name is Anubis. He shares his enclosure with Osirus. Both very cool 'cats'

A few of my ancestors were want to do that, and what is really funny is that they would tattoo up a head of a slave, then remove it and swap it with American whalers in return for Muskets and axes ...:eek:
Anyway back to the Topic. One of the reasons so much early Ford stuff survived was because a lot of my relations loved the Ford V8 and would keep a car going for years using parts of others they would scrounge up. I have been to places in NZ that were covered in V8 and Model T&A stuff. A few such places still exist in the north but these days the value of the odd bits that are left is known or assumed .
