Got up early this morning and went creepin through town snappin photos with the crew. Here are a few of the better ones. These photos were show on film and somehow burned onto a cd by the good people at Walgreens 1hr.

We thought this old brick alleyway was pretty cool. It's down town behind an old Italian Resturant. I was able to crawl ontop of the dumpsters to get some of these shots.

Everyone has to get involved when theres some vintage steel involved. Good thing theres only 4 lines for violations.

Not a bad way to waste a few hours on Saturday morning. These photos were taken with a Yashica camera my dad bought in MO when he was in the Natl Guard in the 60's. I was hoping to get a little bit darker black and brighter whites but I havent used an SLR type camera since high school. A few more outings and hopefully I will get some better shading once I get used to reading the light meter a little better.

Lemme know what you guys think..... should I ditch the old camera and just use a digital?

Love the pics! They have a cool vintage "feel" to them that I doubt you could re-create with a digital. I say keep working with the Yashica.

Most digitals I know have a B/W setting and if they don't, you can use Photoshop. Nice pics.

I'm just an old guy who still shoots film; BUT, I'd say, keep the film and learn the nuances of B&W. Try some other brands of film. I've found digital to be harder to control the tonal range. That said, I still shoot color negative film with my Olympus OM4. My digital is an Olympus Stylus 300 rangefinder. I suppose if I got a decent digital SLR, I might change my mind.

thanks for the positive comments. i kinda want to get a fish eye lense for it,.....although i know the pics come out kinda cheesy when they are over used. ill be sure to keep posting them as we take them.

thanks phil. i really wanted crisper darks. i was using kodak 400 b/w from Walgreens. I think i am gonna look for some better film. it might be worth spending some extra cash to get better results. the same film shot alot better the night or two before when we were out in the garage. see below

a digital camera is a tool, like a hammer.

a film camera is a tool, like a paint brush.

The pictures came out cool Dru. I'd say keep working with that camera. You'll get the feel of it.

Maybe it's just my monitor but I'd say you're getting pretty bright whites and dark blacks as it is. The whites don't seem terribly blown out and there seems to be a fair amount of detail in all but the darkest of shadows. I've shot a few rolls of C41 B+W in the past and always liked the results, though yours seem to have a bit more contrast than I remember from mine.

Did you get any real prints made from the negatives to compare to the scans? I wouldn't be surprised if the mini-lab scan-to-CD process misses some of the subtle details which might be present on the negatives. And your more evenly lit interior shots seem to show a better range of grays, ***uming you didn't do a little tweaking in PS before you posted these.

Still, I think you're doing a pretty good job with the metering as it is. The effect you're getting gives you a pretty nice feel for this kind of shooting. You might get close to this look with some digital manipulation, but sometimes it's just easier to dig out an old Yashica and shoot a couple rolls of film!

thanks. i think part of what has me frustrated is the prints. the 4x6 that i had the film printed onto are pretty washed out. theres a lot of just white open areas that pull my eyes from what i was really trying to shoot. when i look at them on the cd's or on the monitor they actually do look closer to what i wanted. i cant be too upset....guess i just need to build a dark room in the shop. none of the photos have been manipulated other than to turn the talls ones straight up and down and not laying on sides.

these were all developed at the drugstore and for like 3 bucks they burn them onto a cd. copy and paste from cd to computer and then post-ola.

i did a lot of dark room stuff in high school. got pretty good with the projecters and chemical process. ah but hell, that was almost 10yrs ago and i have a hard time remembering my home address now. i would like to re educate myself but i can only really afford one hobby at a time.
