just a thought, but I think the porterbuilt dropmember is something like 12-1500$
imo, a little easier than building and fabricating a whole new frame, and you already have the spindles and bags that will fit right on it. I am pretty sure that a dropmember is a bolt on, with a tiny bit of welding, and it will lay frame.

Question for you bagged guys. I have a '62 with torsion bars in the front. I've been told that I can just put mounts in the front for bags and remove the torsion set up completely. Has anyone here tried this and how difficult was it? I'm looking into doing that before the Roundup this year, if possible.

not that I am pushing the porterbuilt stuff.... but he makes a bolt in dropmember specific for the 60-62 truck.
also you can ditch all the torsion stuff and with minimal work bolt in a 63 -87 crossmember and go that route....

Thanks for the heads up, but from what I saw earlier, the porterbuilt is 12-1500 bones. I can't afford that. Maybe a later front end is the best way to go for me. Anyone in the Austin area have one lying around that they're not using? :D

You can easily bag that torsion frontend.

Theres great threads on it over at 67-72chevytrucks.com in the 60-66 sub-forum.

I'm not sure what ive gotten myself into....

Bought this yesterday, 65' GMC longbed.

I spent yesterday afternoon destroying the campershell to take to the dump. God only knows what went on in there.....the smell of cat piss was overwelming. YUK!!!!

Anyway, its all stock, still has the 305 V6 and 3 spd trans. I'm going to try to get that running here in the next few weeks. My buddy and I have a backup plan to install a 235/powerglide combo if the 305 doesnt run, but lets hope for the best.

Its either the best or worst $300.00 I ever spent, we'll see.

I've got a '62 Suburban, but I'd love to have a '60-'66 4x4 for utility work and hunting. I'd slap one of those '60s camper shells on the back of it so quick it'd make your head spin. A couple of cots inside, a hook for the lantern, maybe an old Coleman 2-burner stove, and I'd be lovin' life.

A 4x4 Suburban or panel truck would work for that too, but it just seems silly to have two of the same model!

Just reading through this great thread and saw this. thought hey that's my truck!
I bought this truck last summer. It had no windshield, no exhaust and no bed and I picked it up for a song out in the desert. Since then it's got new glass, side exit pipes and I just finished C-notching the frame and fitting a wood kit in the bed. Runs like a dream and I'm about to do a kustom grill and bumper at the front. maybe caddy lights in the rear.

Great to see some photo's of its life before I picked it up......

    here's how it looks now

Since I just finished this '63 GMC, guess I better post it up! And my '62 Chevy for good measure...

The pink one is the new GMC, still in original paint. The other is the '62 Chev, it changes paint faster than I change underwear.

The only picture I have of my old 66 C10 is the one in my avatar. I found it at an RV dealership in Albuquerque a few decades back. The dealership had just changed hands and the new owners told them to get rid of all that old junk out back that was not an RV. I saw them pulling the tarp off the 66 and because it was so weird, I just had to have it. Talked them out of it for a few hundred bucks. When I first got it, it had been lowered and had L50/15 tires all the way around. No power steering and a 10 inch steeriing wheel. One tough ass truck to steer. It had also been lowered by welding the coils in the springs together. A friend of mine had another 2wd that had been rolled just after he replaced most of the suspension including overload springs. I bought all the new parts and put those on the 66 and that raised it up just a bit. I wasn't really going for the gasser look, it just sort of happened. But I liked it that way. When I got it, there was 292 inline that was beefed a bit, but needed work. I pulled that and swapped in a 305, and not long after that a rebuilt 307. I rebuilt the powerglide and went through all the rest of the mechanicals in the next couple of months. I sold it to a guy in Albuquerque just before I retired from the military and still regret that. It was one fun truck. Wish I knew where it was now.
