Stupid Cadillac Flathead Question for gods sake. Here is a erlier quote from a fellow Hamber.

-Great looking drawing. I know I'm splitting hairs but the Cadillac flathead only has 3 exhaust ports per side. So three pretty pipes..BULLINGTON-

My Question is this, What happens on top of a Caddy Flathead that allows 3 exhaust or 4 exhaust? Do you modify it yourself and make a 4 port exhaust or is there a model of motor that has 4 ports. Current rodders Journal shows four pipes but we were cut down for a drawing on Hamb that showed four pipes. Whats up.

I wonder if one is a dummy/ or blank? I've only seen three exhaust ports on a caddy flathead, and am unaware of one that might have four. A good one to ask here on the hamb would be fiftyv8.

Too bad Bob Wright (owner of the 27 Cad powered roadster pictured on left) isn't with us any longer or I'd just see him @ breakfast (like I used to) and ask him how they did it?
I'd say that they siamesed the ports (in the middle perhaps?) and made the header flange mount the 4 tubes. Someones gotta have an answer here???

Never heard of a 4 port engine, but I had considered using a 4th pipe myself if I ever built a set of custom pipes just to do exactly what that guy has done, cause some discussion and debate. I would not have been so cruel as to put a hood over them, which just adds to the ???? marks.

    Nice detective work 38Flattie.

Maybe the fourth pipe goes to the muffler? That'd be cool!

Actually, this flathead started in 1936, and had three. It was a 322, and was introduced in the Cadillac. Cadillac later changed to a 346, and used the 322 in the Lasalle. It did not have the front motor mounts like the 37 and later, and the exhaust exited on the rear passenger side. The 36 block is the only year the design was used. It also had a unique dizzy, for that year only, and the generator mounted low on the drivers side, not on top, like the later models did. The intakes and exhaust interchange with later years.

The four exhaust caddies were the earlier design, I believe.
