  3. What is the thing on the roof for? I'm sure Dutch had a good reason.

their were several reasons that so few drivers were killed..Most important they were all good drivers. second was that a lot did not have trailers and used a tow bar. so wreck the car and hire a wrecker to pull it home. I have owned or looked at a lot of vinatge race cars over the years. cages made from water pipe, square tubing, exhalst pipe, alumnum tubing painted black. {the rules said black pipe} one the side bars were taped in. the worst was a bumper for the roof peice on two peices of pipe. many with bed steads they looked cool with the orniments in place. saw one 46 ford hobby car that all the cage was threaded pipe screwed togethet and bolted to the frame. Red Farmer built several cars with square tubing the reason was that some one gave him a truck load of it.. The top class cars built after 64 were a lot better. I went to Nashville Speedway the week after 2 people were killed in the figure 8 class. They had a 10 pound sledge hammer checking cages. the usual field was the 24 fast cars they always had around 40 cars show up that night we only had 17 cars that passed the test to race. I could tell lots more like the mini stock with lots of pvc tubing.

This car was built, owned and driven by Rick Coyle, out of Barton NY. I seem to recall that it was originally a dirt mod that was reconfigured into an asphalt mod. He drove it in the early-mid 1980s, primarily at Shangri La and as shown here at Oswego. He still had this chassis sometime into the early 1990s, but I don't know if it's still around. Rick went on to drive Supermodifieds for many years and may still have one. Despite the crew being "nothing but animals" they seemed like a good bunch of folks.

His dad is long time Chemung and Shangri-La competitor Vern Coyle, who drove a #1X coupe in the 1960s.

I think in the maelstrom of great pics you got this one name backwards Bullfather - these are pics of the world's oldest juvenile delinquent (and I mean that in the best way possible), the great Bentley Warren. Ben has a saloon up in Maine that I need to go to one of these days - their motto is something like "Who's having more fun than us? We are!" which fits Bentley to a tee.

  8. John, is nothing sacred? A 61 Bubble Top? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh I once owned a 60 Biscayne Bubble Top with a 6, 3 on the tree and a posi rear, talk about a rare bird. One owner, spotless car until my brother in law decided to park next to me, the bad part was when he pulled out!

I still have the Gator Racing News with this picture and report about that race. It was the Oct. Syracuse race that got rained out, then snowed out and was rescheduled for the following spring. Accident happened coming off turn #2.

  17. I love the Wendell Scott photos. Especially the red sedan. I would say it was a 39 Standard with the wiper holes filled or a 40 with a 38 deluxe or 39 standard nose on it.

Really enjoy the pics. Dr. John: you were my favorite gater columnist! And announcer! The Johnny Adams #73 was actually a 1958 Ford. Johnny lived in my hometown of Hilton,NY and his family owned a funeral home in the village. He later drove the 7-UP car.
