Bill Torrisi (65) leads Ed Ortiz at Lancaster (NY) Speedway, 1970. Gordon Reinig photo. Bill is famous for winning the very last stock car race at Buffalo's old Civic Stadium in '59.

Don Diffendorf (12) in the Bill Sandman-owned coach leads Maynard Troyer and Jim Rudolph at Lancaster (NY) Speedway, 1970. These action shots in color are very rare -- Gordie was shooting 35mm film back then and it was difficult to capture action in color as it grew dark. Gordon Reinig photo.

Here's a car built by Merrick Clemments out of Durham NC. I drove this car in the Southern Ground Pounders series in NC. The car was built around the legacy of "Rapid" Ray Hendrick.

The car has since been transferred into a sportsman car to also honor Ray.

Here's a pic of my Grandfather, Wadford (Waddy) Cash (left) and great uncle, W.H. (Woody) Arrington (right) w/ their Sportsman car from the late 50's. The car was ran in NC at Bowman, Raleigh, and Hillsborough.

  23. hahaha photobucket did the same thing to me, but I use it some much I decided to get an account with them. One day photos were gone, this place went nuts hahaha ok just Rich and my Pops lol

Through this whole thread there's photos of Islip. I know Rich has some but much later then early 70s. I still have to find him a good source for turning over his negs to disc or something.

Anyone got more pics of early-'70s Islip? Loved seeing those cars in Gater News every week, but never got to visit the track...[/quote]

I know back in that time Ed Appoldt was the track photographer.

We need to find a friend or relative of his to find out who might have all the photo's he took
I dont know for sure if he is still "with us" or not but it would be a GOOD FIND for sure.....
    Anyway,figured I would "plant a seed" :)

  28. I'll ask on The Jam about Ed Appoldt

Ed was the photographer at Freeport for many years. He became the photographer at Islip in 1968 after the strike-shutout at Freeport in 1967. Marty Himes has all of his negatives and photos. I have some Freeport shots of his. Anything on the net that is an action shot at Freeport, like on the Pop's Racing Site and several on this thread, are his. The Stock Car photos from Freeport and Islip on Marty's site, are also all Ed Appolts. He is responsible for the famous in-car camera film in Bruno Brackey's sedan which is featured in the Snyder "Stock Car Classics" video. Bruno started last in that race, the Sedan Feature, in 1959, and won, and it's all there. If you have seen that film, you have to notice the carb stack sticking through the hood with the screen on it, I have that stack. Regards,George LeBlanc. www.weissglassspeedway.com
