Grinding Welds?

I kinda like the look of the welds being exposed on some parts of the car. My question is do welds have to been ground down?

 

No.....I'd rather have a good looking weld than a ground down ugly one. My welds are usually all ugly....

BTW, is the frame jacked up and the rear end hanging down in that picture?

I think your welds look terrific and no they don't need to be ground. I like seeing the craftsmanship in a car. If the rest of your car looks as good as this corner, you have a cool ride.

do good prep work, make a nice weld and leave it alone. It looks better and is stronger

 

The rear bones havn't been mounted yet, so the diff is pointing up a bit.
If something looks wrong please let me know. This is my first rod build.

Nope, they don't. Too many guys seem to spend more time practicing on their grinder when they should practice their welding.

Your shackles are pointing the wrong direction. The spring needs to be hanging below the perches.

 

How will that spring work with the shackles bottomed out?

 

Welds are much stronger if you DON'T grind them , And yours look fine. Nothing to be ashamed of there!
And as mentioned above, the shackles need to point the other way.

 

Once you start grinding welds, you can't quit grinding welds.

They will never look nice no matter how much you grind them.

It will take Bondo or some kind of filler to make it look right.

Take the time to make a good weld and leave them in an as-welded condition!!

They arent bottomed out. They are "flipped" upward. My guess he has it that way to stay more rigid during set up.

 

They where hung up. See latest pic. But now the way it sits, the bottom of the spring perch is hits the diff

 

Maybe once you clean all the grease of that axle it will clear.

 

Or maybe it will help it slip by I think once I get the bones+shocks mounted it should clear.

If my welds looked like that, I wouldn't grind mine -

 

I can't take credit for the welds they where done by az/willis....the kid is good.....my welding is improving.

 

With welds that look like that, it should be a crime if they were to be ground on, and or filled with bondo.

 

Beautiful welds are a thing to look at and all should see.

 

i wounld grind those. they look good and anytime you grind a weld that hasnt been bevelled befroe hand you ruin its integerty.

 

If you used a 110V welder than the welds shouldn't be ground down especially.

If they look good leave them alone.. If the joint is prepped to get good penetration the weld should be as strong or in some cases stronger than the parent material. Make sure you have no undercut along the edges, this will make the weld weak and a likely place for a crack to start.. Looks good from what I can tell in the pic.

 

A ground weld is someone covering up a bad weld. Not always but more times than not the case.

it wont hit once your bones are on and the pinion angel is fixed,, trust me i checked before welding anything. you will have plenty of travel before anything hits

 

Based on the appearance of your welds, I'm guessing you already know the answer. Looks nice.
