Just out of my own morbid curiosity, how many folks here are of college age and younger? What brought you to the dark side of traditional rods and customs? And do you share my pain in having to explain your car(s), and why they look the way they do, to all of your friends? Stand up and show that our generation isnt totally consumed with the Fast N Furious bullshit. And R.I.P to our young HAMB statesman Andy Dunn, who exemplified this crowd with humbling strength and generosity. May angels guide him in.
14, and I can't drive until August (even then I'm bending a few laws..). It's like being a blind painter or a pimp without any gold chains.. And having to explain old cars is hard enough to my 'peers', but explaining why I bought a Corvair to anyone on here is twice as hard.
23 in July. Owned 3 old cars. 63 Chevy II Wagon, 58 Oldsmobile and now my 66 Buick. None of my friends are into old cars, just me.
The "dark side of traditional rods and customs" is not found here, it is found under the heading...R--R--, not to spoken here except in dirision and laughter.
It all started about 7 years ago... At 15 i got into the whole rockabilly scene... Started going to car shows to see the bands... Then just started goin to the car shows for the cars... Got my first car last year... Still learning a lot... And the rest is history...
Yea i hear ya Pasadena... to me, R_ _ R_ _ is a four letter word. And it seems like the died in the wool Rat Rodders tend to be of the younger persuasion. Be it the rebel connotation, hobbled together, utterly dangerous, dirt cheap, or completely mind-boggling nature of Rat Rods that attracts some folks, I dont know. Probably never will.
I am 20 turning 21 on may 5th , I don't really know what got me into hot rodding I havent had a hotrod yet due to not being able to afford to build one . I just liked hot rods especially the more traditional ones . Only one thing really bums me out about the way things are now , well 2 things one being the price or genuine steel . The other being that look at where are cars are going today in the auto hobby , electric motors and green bio fuel , and economic this and fuel efficiant that . There used to be a time when people would drive there cars around then try there best to go faster then someone else on the weekends , it used to be about brains and inovation and not about image and ego . I was born in the wrong time .
im 17 and it all started when i was about 9 when my dad has a serious health condition and i had to fix my moms car ever since that day ive wrenched on cars. They are what i enjoy and do best on. First motor swap i did was in my dads 68 chevy C-10 when i was 11, i tend to have my dad help me out any way he can while i work on many projects bacause of his condition i am still lucky to have my dad around almost lost him at a young age so its kind of a son father thing.. And about explaining it to friends hell they dont know the difference between a four cylinder and a V-8 they dont understand anything at all these car terms are a foreign language to them..
We'll take ya Stephen... but just this once! haha, I will be 23 in just about a month. My Father is into cars a bit, but not nearly like me. He and I built my first car, a 1964 C-10 during my high school years. Ever since then ive pretty much been wrenching and welding. I have only been without vintage tin for a total of 3 months. Worst three months of my life. Now i have a 55 chevy bel-air, 56 210, 57 bel-air (all post cars) and a 55 chevy pickup big window, clipped and lowered... my universe is aligned!
i am 25, started getting into the rockabilly seane when i was in 7TH GRADE!!!. ill never forget it i was on the free way with my parents and we got passed up by a merc. i remember it was black primered and chopped. i have always liked cars but always thought of classic cars as weekend drivers. i dont know why i never thought you can drive ne as a regular car! letalone a chopped one. it was from that day on that i fell in love with the culture
I'm 20, and my journey started when I was a toddler. At the time my grandfather had a collection of 24 classic cars. From a '31 Model A to a '69 Mustang and everywhere in between. I grew up around those cars and that love has carried on.
Haha, Ok good! I have also had to explain what "traditional hot rods" and "50's style" hot rods are to alot of my friends....They usualy get it after I explain it but some still dont....Like alot of women, so I just show'em the back seat ...It basically comes down to If I have to explain it to you, you wont get it anyway. For me, I was 7 and it was the guy the next block over that had a flat red primered 34 5 window coupe that I used to bother. The guy still has it and I still bother him.
I'm 16 and building my little '34 Ford. Don't really have much to say about how I got into it though,,was in love with the cars as far as I can remember back,,and my passion just gets deeper with the more tools I'm given the chance to work with.
Here's another question... do yall have "hot-rod buddies" that you know or nay? I build my cars with me, myself, and I. Nobody cares when i get a new part in, convert over my 4-door to a 2-door, or when lay down the first layer of primer... It gets a bit discouraging. I try to show my best friend, who has just the faintest glimmer of interest, the basics of hot rods, and about 2 minutes in he just glazes over and says "hey, how bout we just grab a beer and watch some "south park." I hate that damn show with a passion.
I hear you. I've had the fortune of having several friends who share my interest, and a few who know nothing about cars but love working on mine with me. I've been lucky having a family who also understand my love, but for the many who don't, I try not to explain it to them. It's too frustrating.
I'm 25 so maybe I'm a little old for this post Haha. I don' have any hot rod buddies either. I do everything myself. Most of my friends like hot rods and customs, but don't know how to work on them or like them enough to want to put in that much work. My dad is way into hot rods, but doesn't really know much about them. Kind of a bummer. They all fight over who gets ride in it when they get on the road though. Some of you guys might be interested in the "young HAMBer social goup" http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/group.php?groupid=198
I'm 18 and I also have this love for traditional rods and customs. I just got my 51 chevy that i built, on the road and am loving it!! And yes many people i know don't understand why i don't like mustangs and bmw's, especially kids my age. But i don't give a shit as i pull out of a parking lot and roar the small block down the street,as they all stand there in their four door tempo's!!!
I am the big 2 oh. My grandad prob started the bug with me, although I started with british 4 cylinder fords, then had a 6 cylinder falcon which I put a V8 in. but always wanted that little piece of nostalgia, so got the 51. 20 and I own over 10 litres of engine, when most 20 year olds here have a 2 litre with a snail or something to the side.
I'm 19 and I've just gotten into traditional hot rods and customs. I dont like the whole fast and furious stuff is because I see is a bunch of billet and crome clown cars from Japan.
I'm 22, I'll be 23 in June. My dad was a big hot rodder back in the early 60's, all of his friends that come around were and some still are. This is and always has been a love and passion for me, started at age 3 building model cars, started building the real thing at 14, 8 years later I'm building a steel '32 roadster, I hope I'm on the right track! This has kept me out of trouble... for the most part!
I'm 21. was introduced a couple years ago by a friend who helped me get my first car on the road ('53 cranbrook) which i didn't even know what a carburator was when i bought it. but i've met a lot of good people through it and haved learned alot.
16 love hot rods and evreything about them. I like the skill and detail that goes into them and being and low man in the shop is not really that bad. Its well worth the learning and skill you get out of it
im 20 been around old cars my whole life worked in a few hot rod shops when i was 15-18 learning mostly but did some work, i could never see my self driving a honda in my life. i've been working on my 57 for the past year when i get time here and there hopefully have her back up and running in the next month or so with the brand new Y block and fordomatic wiring full build custom dash disks in the front battery in the back. also i know the the that puts all the fast and the furious cars together also for the transformer movies.
