Nice work.

Just a work of caution, with those bungee cords on your shrinker/ stretcher, get rid of them asap and replace them with some springs from the hardware store. I worked with a guy that had one of those bungee cords break and guess where it went.... yeap shot right into his eye *ouch* he didn't lose his eye, just his sight out of it.

 

I got both front fenders done except for the area where the grill bolts. I think I will leave them this way so that people can see at the show what they looked like before and after.

Just goes to show how important it is to have the physical object of whatever you are copying there to check back and forth with. When I went up to take patterns of the roof on my buddies 33' vicky I took my trusty contour gauge. The contour gauge has two sections that screw together and because of this the gauge has the tenancy to pivot on that joint. So because the joint was loose it through off my patterns ever so slightly especially on the long curves where I had to use the gauge multiple times on the same line. Basicly I descovered what everyone was saying...that the roof needed to be leaned in. My patterns werent saying so, but they were slightly off.

Now that I have correct patterns the roof is finaly where it needs to be.

I also started on the bead that continues from the rain gutter around the back. It almost time to start trimming and welding all these pieces together.

 

I got the other side drip rail bead made.

 

I got the passenger door parts painted. Once the paint dries I can put the door back together.

 

The work you did on the fenders is flat-out amazing. I'm super-impressed with everything I've seen you do so far.

 

This morning I got the passenger door all put back together and hinged on the car.

 

This morning I started tacking all the pieces together.

 

Today I started completely welding the different sections together.

 

Looks to me like you got yourself a Vicky!

 

Just continuing to get the pieces welded together.

 

Incredible work!! Crazy question, what are you doing to fenders after you metal work them as they have a media blasted look vs say a filed and finished appearance. It is a satin look? Maybe it is just pic but it looks to have a finish vs say a 180 satin look ?? Hope I am being clear in question?

 

I think I understand what you are saying. Its just stepped up to 500 grit sanded with an orbital.

 

Ive been working on finishing the seams on the back, as well as bolting on the fenders and running boards.

My goal is to have the drivers side of the vicky conversion finished for the show. The passenger side with the bullet holes will take some more time. But at least people can see the drivers side complete so they can get a good feel for how the rest will look.

 

I worked some more on the roof getting the dents worked out. I also got the gas tank cover roughed in just so I could bolt it on for the show.

I started this morning on making the corner of the roof. With all the seams coming to one spot it would be a mess welding. Plus making this piece allows me to get the contours right were I want it.

 

Really nice work! How did you make the beads and get them into the proper arrangement?

 

I have two machines that I use to make my beads. My bead roller, and my Lennox (pullmax style machine). As for the proper arrangement I just followed my patterns that I took of the original car.

 

I keep seeing this thread come back to the top but every time I check it there's nothing new. The last post I see was in 2007. What gives?

 

Honestly I have no idea what you are saying. I started this thread in january of this year 2009. And there have been over 100 reply's. You sure your seeing things right?

 

I got the roof area all worked out. Just some more work on the beads and I can fill the open area below.

 

LOL you must no be paying any attention ....Their is tons of progress...it no easy feat to take a 2 dr sedan and convert it to a vicky

 

I must have had a glitch. I posted then a couple more pages popped up. As for the 2007 thing that was just me being a dumbass. Salt Flats, I live in Wyoming and if you ever start offering metal working classes (as mentioned) I would definately be interested

 

I figured you had a reciprocating machine of some flavor. Couple questions:

1- Can you show the dies you used?
2- How did you lay out the flat metal in order to get the three dimensional bead? Three dimensional curved beads give me fits..

 

No worries bro Ive had a few glitches on this site too.

As for when I start having metal working classes I will defiantly let you know.

 

Tomorrow Ill post some pictures of the dies. As for laying out for the beads its kind of hard to explain, but after I get the bead pressed there is just a lot of hand massaging to get it to curve where I want it to.

 

damn, find this thread yesterday and soaked these pictures up like a sponge....and burn it into my brain for ever...this is, how my workpieces should look in the future ! absolutely fantastic ...
