10th grade at Thomas Jefferson Sr High, in Cedar Rapids,Ia.
Got my drivers license and first car in late 62. The car was a 54 Mercury sun valley. Kind of a rust bucket but it was WHEELS.
    Yes, those were the days.

The first part of '62 I was in 10th grade and second part of '62 I was in the 11th grade at Artesia High School, graduated high school June 1963. I drove a '49 Ford Tudor flathead 3 speed when I could keep it running or I'd ride with my pal Charley in his '51 BelAir if his was running (we both were from very large poor families!).
I worked part time for the Hamby's "Red Barn" used furiture store there in Artesia.
Spent a lot of time at the Pike (Nu Pike) in Long Beach, Ca. or hung out at Seal Beach or the Lincoln drive- in in Buena Park during those years.
During those years there were mostly dairys, crop fields, and orange groves! My uncle & aunt lived on a orange grove about a mile from Knots Berry Farm and we would run thru the groves and spend the day there just hanging out (cost nothing to get in in those days).
    YEP! It was pretty cool!

The best of times and the worst of times.............Viet Nam going on (spent some "quality" time there later in '68!) Kennedy assassination a year later in '63, drag racing was in full bloom ( not ever to be duplicated) yada, yada ,yada! Glad to have been there, but can't go back, so I'm over it.:)

I was stylin' in my 3-corner pants and riding around town in my custom baby buggy. Born in '62. Remember the first car that ever made me stop in my tracks and say 'Wow'. Would have been in roughly 1969.

It was a big block Vette. As I recall it was Marina blue with sidepipes and knockoff finned wheels. Loud as heck and without a doubt the coolest car on the planet. I about crapped my 7-year old pants when I saw that - what a ride! My older brother knew exactly what it was and talked about it for days. Of course we asked mom to get one but for some reason she said no. Can't imagine why!

  11. I LOVE those old color photos from the sixties, they are in color but look so surreal it is unbelievable. Sorta like lookin' at photos from the War Between The States taken by Matthew Brady, you can tell that it is really people in the photos and real events but the time passage between the photos being taken and today just make it strangely intriguing, almost like peering into an old broken crypt.

  12. Ahhhh, 1962 started with me in the 10th grade, had a girlfriend who was a senior with a 52 Plymouth. Turned 16 that summer and got my 48 Ford coupe running ( see avatar ) went racing with my buddy in his 57 Chevy E/S, thought we were someting. Life was simpler then but high school still sucked.

Going to High School in Long Beach California, Driving my 56 big window, still driving one. Surfing the pier, jetty, pipeline, had a board by Gorde. Hanging out at the Pike and going to TJ occasionally, had the interior done in my '56 there. Cruising Harvey's broiler now and then but mostly Oscars at the Long Beach traffic circle, or cruise Bellflower Blvd. to the Oscars at Woodriff and Carson. Hodies on Anaheim and PCH. Listening to ol HH Hunter Hancock on the radio along with Dick Hug, Huggy Boy, Listening to Art Laboe broadcast live from Scrivners Drive-in in Hollywood where he would go from car to car taking dedications. Going to dances at El Monte Legion Stadium and the Harmony park ballroom. Hanging at the Bay and cruising Belmont Shore. Buying records at Conleys record rack in Long Beach, Music City in Lakewood or driving up to Dolphins of Hollywood. Those were some fun times.

In '62 I and others that were short were asked to re-up to be an "Advisor" and get combat pay. At the time i said "You must be kidding. They are shooting at us over there." The guy told me that they only shoot at each other, being bigger we were safe. I decided against it. Our officers told us we were lucky as they didn't get to make a choice. That was the Signal corp. I would guess it was less optional in combat groups.

I was 14 years old and quiting Catholic School and entering the auto shop at a brand new trade school that was just opening in our town. I'd had enough of barely making grades and had been a gearhead since 1956 when an older cousin gave me his old issues of Hot Rod magazine.
I just KNEW I wanted to work on cars.
I hung around with an older kid who had a 1953 Ford 2dr hardtop w/ a stock flathead and stick shift. It wasn't fast but it sure was loud.
I was dreaming of the day that I could get my license which was 2 years off,but my father took me driving most Sunday mornings in our '56 Chevy stick six.
When I started at the trade school, I made friends with a kid who's older brother had a '55 Chevy 4dr. green w/white scallops and red wheels. It had a v8 stick w/ overdrive. Once in awhile my friend drove it to school so we could work on it. We put on a new 4barrell carb and glasspacks. When we fired it up in shop w/o any mufflers, I thought we were going to get tossed out of school.

1962 was a good year, I spent a lot of time riding around in friends cars and going to the local Mc Donalds and A&W that had just opened.

I had a DA and leather jacket and thought I was really cool !!!
Man, I wish I knew then what I know now .........

Hey Solidaxel, Yeah, I remember Gene's. Most of the chrome on my 56 came from Collins. He was a wheel guy on Artesia I think, just off Lakewood. Had stacks of wheels in the front yard. He also did Chrome. My 56 was black with grey primer spots and had 59 corvette taillights in the rear fenders. I used to go to Larry Watsons when he was on Artesia off Bellflower, I think Eddie Martinez interiors was in front or next door. Larry at one time was on Lakewood Blvd out towards Rosecrans or Firestone. I used to trip in there once in awhile. Spent most of my time around Lakewood, Los Altos and Long Beach. Grew up about a mile from Long Beach Vets Stadium.

  28. 11 years old, enjoying half-days that school year and remembering my brother's '56 Fairlane. Dad teaching me to drive in his Ford panel truck, or if I was lucky, in Mom's '60 Ford car. Putzing around the farm on the old John Deere "poppin' johnny" tractor. Watching "My Three Sons" on TV and Chip's way-cool stingray bike with the butterfly handlebars. I got a Schwinn later that year or in early '63. Playing little league baseball and riding our bikes to practice and games, sticking baseball cards of those hated Yankees in the spokes. Being in Michigan, any Yankee was the enemy to our Tigers. Parking our bikes in front of the dime store without having to lock 'em. Living a few miles from the GM proving grounds, watching the "new" next year's cars zooming up & down the road, driven by engineers or other employees at the Grounds waaay before they came out for sale. A great time to be 11, no pressures, didn't have to work, wishing I was old enough to drive. Life is still good. But it was a different world back then.
