'49, '50, '51 Mercs....the dream of kustom guys world wide like the tri fives are to the street machine guys!
How about Steve Miller? He did Mercury Blues way before Jackson, but the song didn't originate with him either.
Now the hardest part will be keeping yourself from gettin the saw out and lowerin the lid. Kustoms have a way of making you modify them just a bit nore tha you had planned. Fortunately, cant think of anything that makes a better mild custom than a 49 Merc! Good luck and congrats!
"You took my advise and ditched the 60 Caddy for the 49 Merc eh?" Exactly... you're the one that put the bug in my ear... good call. "Now the hardest part will be keeping yourself from gettin the saw out and lowerin the lid." I think that day is going to come for sure. One of the first things I want to do is get rid of the original tail lights... they just don't look right to me. Ideas anyone ? "I'll be damed, just saw the plate, sure hope that wasn't sitting in my back yard?" Thanks Nebraska for all those rust free cars <!-- / message -->
Treat her right,no silly stuff shes a beauty and you will have your fellow HAMBERS to answer to ok..hahaha nice score, very jealous
Like I said about 10 posts above you it was K.C. Douglas that wrote Mercury Blues in 1949. David Lindley also covered it. And yeah the first time I ever heard it was the Eagles. Any new photos for us "Junkies" Caddy_O ?
I bought me a 51 and it was the best way I spent my money ever...I like the rusty look of yours...Very nice!!!!
This weekend I got the Merc outfitted with some tires that would hold air so I can get it up on the trailer. The p***enger side door is the worst area on the car, it is rusted out on the bottom and side, not that big of a deal considering the rest of the car. The rockers, floor pans, and trunk are near perfect. I'll be working on getting the Model A finished and painted, take a break from working on other people's cars, and then dive into the Merc. It's been a while since I've been this excited to get started on a project.
Way too Kool and congrats on the buy..... I've been crazy about them for years and it took me about fifteen years to get my hands on one. I like your idea of keeping the changes simple. Mercs don't have to be chopped to be kool! Get her on the road and enjoy it. Let me know if ya need anything I'll do what I can to help ya chase parts. Happy Trails, Mick
Caddy-O I need a favor. I have a set of '49 letters I want to put on the hood of my '50 and I want to do it correct to the '49. Could you get me some measurements of the layout, how far up from the hood edge and what the spacing is in between the letters? Also, what do the openings for the posts look like? I imagine they are oval and sort of look like you could make them by drilling two holes and connecting them with a cutoff wheel. If you give me a drill bit diameter and an overall height of the opening. Lastly, what do the retaining clips look like? I need to get these still. Thanks for your time. Anybody else reading this is that can help with measurement or has the clips please PM me. 1950merc
After thinking about it a while and looking at a few hundred photos of chopped and unchopped Mercs I decided that I would go with a chop on my car. I delivered the Merc to a friend of mine last Wednesday and he didn't waste any time getting started.
That's the way to do it! By the way...anybody interested in a killer deal on an un-chopped Merc...check this one out http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=364685
i read a thread the other day from this dude who was doing a 4 door for a friend...they are from jersey maybe?? anyone know who im talking about? "guy is the man with mercs" but i cant remember. alot of the thread was about the rockers and getting the car lowered and drivable. good work done in the thread. might be a interesting read for you. anyway, my point is, in this thread of mystery that i cant remember **** about....he had pictures of the tail lights he had just lowered...very sharp. that was my point! looks like a super nice car. i love the letters on the hood.
I need to locate the thread you are talking about... I've had a few people tell me that I just need to lower the rear tail lights. I'm helping a friend on his 49 Pontiac and I've kinda been digging the tail lights on his car....but I can't remember ever seeing any of them on a Merc.
thank you. sumthin about a ford truck? nice find, congrats, beed trying to birddog a 409 for a couple of years now, finally got it.I know your pain, brother!
