That was Dale Sr.'s last fulltime Sportsman car before he got picked up by Rod Osterlund late in 1978. He ran it at short tracks and superspeedways chasing NASCAR Late Model Sportsman points. I believe it was owned by another guy in Kannapolis - Gary somebody.

Good stuff, keep them coming. When I was just a kid my uncle had a rental house down the street from us in College Park, GA and the fellow that lived there had an old coupe race car. I walked down there one day and he was painting it. He poured the paint out on the top and worked it down with a brush.

I don't remember who this was but the shot is from GA International in Jefferson, GA.

    Thanks!

This car was at Wake County Speedway in Raleigh NC this past weekend for a UCAR race. Man, that race fuel smells like perfume to me!!!

Dog, those 39-41 coupes really bring back the memories. That's what they were running when my parents first took me to the Jeffersonville (Ind.) Sportsdrome in 1949. Thanks.

That's what I remember also from my early days at Freeport & Islip. Watching them coming out of the second turn carrying the left front wheel about half way to the third turn!

Enjoyed the '56 photos, I had the pleasure of meeting Curtis Turner many years ago at Lakewood Speedway a one mile dirt track at the old Atlanta (or Southeastern) Fair Grounds. I also ran into Tim Flock at Charlotte while we were promoting the races at GA International. Marvin Panch was around the garage area for many years with the Grayrock brake people if I remember right. I have some photos of Richy Panch somewhere. I have a son named after Curtis.

A bunch was standing around in the pits at Lakewood after the race, which Curtis won by the way, when someone said, "They are talking about paving this place". Curtis then replied, "Hell, Don't let 'em do that, then you'd have to come here to race wearing a coat and tie".

  28. Just thought I'd contribute a little more this great thread.

Stan Kalwasinski had his great "Racing Collectables" show yesterday in Peotone, Il. It's a must DO for anyone that enjoys what we see here on this thread.

I bought two photo's from Stan's collection of Raceway Park stockcars. These two photo's stood out to me on account of how well they were presented in the early 60's.

Raceway back then had some of coolest looking short track cars around in them days. Alot of hard work was put into the look of the cars. These were the top Late Models of the era. No jalopies or junkers.

Just check out the "fit and finish" of the bodies and the fact they looked like racecars but were recognizable from their factory counterparts. Those indeed were great days....

Don Oldenberg's '57 Ford at Raceway Park in 1962. Dig the WWW"s and the "pie crust" slick in the rear.

Just two years later in 1964, Bud Koehler debuts this sharp '64 Mercury. Alot of attention to detail was put into body and how it functioned.

I wish we could turn back the hands of time to see these cars race again.
