It all comes down to how well you prepare the metal you will be painting !

I painted the frame, roll cage & interior on my Gasser 8 years ago with gloss black. Bought 2 quarts and thinned it with mineral spirits, came out nice and still has a very good shine. Took a few days to dry in summer weather. Never heard the acetone or hardener trick, I'll have to try that next time.

My cab will be in Rust-O-Leum here in a few days, with the hood, cowl vent, doors, bed, and tailgate to follow - all Regal Red.

The fenders and running boards will be in semi-gloss black, as will all the other misc. parts except for the grille, which will be Argent Silver.

  5. I rolled my '65 wagon body with Rustoleum Antique White thinned with odorless mineral spirits. Can be seen in the Indy Hamb Meet and Greet pics post. Paint's been on for almost 2 years, still looks great. Results are in the prep.

I sprayed Rustoleum "appliance enamel" on the insides of my front fenders of my '53 Chevy 5 or 6 years and close to 10,000 miles ago. Drive it rain or shine (but not salt) and it's holding up great. I love that sh*t. Should have used it in more places.

I used the brush-on stuff. I used black, and has held up very well thus far, I recommend it.

I'm a fan of the Hammerite version. I buy the quarts and thin it with plain old laquer thinner. Works on steel as well as aluminum. I even sprayed my radiator tanks with it, clean brass, no primer. It's as great as everyone else has said.

Question with a HVLP spray gun? About 4:1 rustoleum :with acetone, lacquer thinner, or mineral spirts? Every time I go to the paint store its $200-300 Its getting old.

Why can't I find Satin black rustoleum? Well I found it sort of, it comes in this Martha Stewarty looking funky ass spray can. Is this the same paint just over packaged?

i just ran across this thread, is the new industrial equipment paint the same as the old tractor paint? i was going to do the brush for under my hood, just because it's going to be so hard to dismantle and spray. it says not for automotive use,but use for industrial machinery? must be not that UV resistant.won't matter under the hood any.

  14. I've found that Rustoleum Saftt Red is a nearly a perfect match for the body color of my rod. I use in a lot for chassis touch up(same color) or for dings on the body. i drive my car a lot.

I found something I like even better than Rustoluem - Ace Hardware Rust Stop paint. It's similar, being an alkyd enamel, but I can get it mixed to match other colors at my local Ace store. I've brushed, sprayed, and rolled it, used it with hardener and without, and spraybombed it, all with great results. It flows out well to eliminate brush marks, and dries glossy. Takes 2 days to dry, just like Rustoleum, unless you add hardner than it's only a couple hours. There are flat and satin blacks and a pretty wide range of standard colors. Any alkyd enamel hardener works in it. The only warning given about sunlight is that light colors might yellow if stored permanently in the dark.

I've painted Model T parts, truck parts, trade show displays and machine tools with it. I have several machine tools painted with it and it stands up to nasty chlorinated cutting oils and coolants and sharp chips from the machining operations. Here's a CNC turning center I'm 'restoring' that I used it on - took a part to the store and they matched the OEM color. Sprayed a lot of it with a $30 HVLP gun and rolled/brushed the rest. The blue machine is a gear shaper I painted over 10 years ago and has been used every day since. No hardener in that one, didn't know about it at the time.

little bit of an update, if you can find it,might have to order, they make a different formulation of rustoleum called industrial choice. dries faster and extremly tough. not sure who has it,maby MSC industrial supply. I paint a lot of black engine parts with it. has held up really well.

So what do you all use for primers? All I can find is thier rusty metal primer, # 7769. Any specific types or brands of hardner? Does the hardner just make it dry faster, or does it make it more chip/scratch resistant? This seems like a cheaper alternative for frame and under the hood parts than the DP90 that I've been using..Thanks all for a great thread!

I have used rustoleum paint for years on several different rides. I've sprayed it on with a gun, sprayed it with cans, and brushed it on.
On the exterior, on a driven car, it holds up well the first year. The second year, it fades out a little, and chips and scratches appear on hood edges, around door handles pretty easily. By the 3rd year its looking pertty bad, fading, scratching and chiping. The hardner doesn't seem to help nor does it seem to matter how it was applied.

My 4x4 has Rustoleum on it that was brushed on over 2 year old rustoleum red primer that was scuffed. This truck sits outside and is used to plow snow. Its also not taken care of, probably only been washed a few times in the last 2 years. I'm getting some surface rust showing up at some edges, probably where the original paint was too thin. The truck is blue, new paint (left from the original gal) does not match, the stuff on the truck has faded several shades. Probably getting a "new" paint job this summer. It takes about 3 quarts to give the big truck 2 coats, brushed on.

One problem with Rustoleum is that if you ever want to use real automotive paint, you have to completely remove the rustoleum. Even using some spray cans (rustoleum spray cans included) over a couple year old coat causes a "neat" wrinkle finish. Gene

We used Rustoleum alot...a chassis, complete cars, parts of trucks... the little quart cans that you can get at WalMart. We used lacquer to reduce it. Drys fast with lacquer and it holds up damn good. I also used Rustoleum from rattle cans to do the roof of my truck. I recommend it.

Has anyone tried to paint over their Rustoleum jobs?? I heard if you use that stuff, you have to strip it all off to repaint a car with Enamel or anything.

OK, so I've got me a stupid question. I love the color of the Rustoleum Royal Blue, but can only find it in gloss. Anyone have an idea of a deglosser I can use? It would save me an assfull of money on my project....

Is the spray can stuff the same as the quart cans? Can you spray it on a bare frame or do you need to prime first?

Even the primer has a quite a bit of gloss to it. Suppose you could scuf it a bit to reduce the shine, but it would have to dry for a couple weeks, it doesn't like to be sanded.

I'm currently in the process of painting my '65 Nova wagon with this stuff. I've got the roof done, and I can't believe how well it looks, with the very subtle smoothed texture finish. Figured, how can I go wrong? Cars gotta be stripped down anyhow for a REAL paintjob!! Using the metallic copper color! WOW!! Here's a couple pictures:

Very true. I'm going to do it. Why cut corners later on when I can afford a real paintjob? The way finances have been treating me, I'll never afford on anyway. :D

painted a car for an old girlfriend years ago..mid 80' Cougar with white rusto thinned with lacquer thinner.
the old garage hadn't been warmed up much that winter when I borrowed a torpedo heater to do the job..car looked good after shooting a nice heavy coat over everything.
the heater blowing away seemed to wake up a few flies, saw them buzzing around and didn't pay much attention at first.
left the heater on for a little while after I finished due to the slow drying time of the rustoleum..started seeing more flies and some were landing on the car.
guess due to it being the first good warmup of the garage it caused the flies to hatch at a rapid rate, the stupid winged bastards thought it was spring or something.
tried picking them off to save the paintjob but they kept coming, finally gave up and went to bed.
next morning the car looked like a freaking sesame seed bun with 78 dark colored flies stuck in the new white paint.
    yes..I counted them.
had to sand it all off and start over, never did that again..
    :)

There is a huge thread on the major mopar web forum that discusses painting of cars using thinned Rustoleum and a marine paint product called Brightside.

Lots of success stories and lots of hand labor and personal involvement including waiting for the paint to dry and wet sand.
