    I would guess the "non-hygrospic-ness" of it..........Is that a word????

    Should not absorb moisture like regular fluid>

    The mineral oil brake fluid is a little less prone to condensation problem, less hydro scopic than regular brake fluid but it will still pick up water and cause rust problems in the system. Many of the British cars of that vintage used mineral oil in the brake systems. The seals used in the brake systems will decompose quickly with regular brake fluid that we use here.
     
  4. Great car, leave it alone!!!!!!!! By the way, a Bentley is really a Hot Rodded Rolls Royce......at least those after WWII. So what's the history already? And are you going to be a total tease and not reveal your purchase price? Do we have to beg?

    The Bentley and Roll Royce of this era are the same car except for the grill shell and the badges. You have to know the serial number of the car when ordering parts for the car.

    There are some really interesting things on the six cylinder engines. The distributor cam only has 3 lobes and duel points. The engine acts like two 3 cylinder engines. The car will still move when running on three cylinders. The timing mark for the engine is at the bell housing at the bottom. It takes two people to time the engine. Many other unique features about this car.

    The transmission is a GM duel range hydro like they used in the Olds and Caddys modified by Rolls Royce.

  10. Picky, picky, picky................you are correct, but Bentley does have a racing history and did offer some options for performance. But I live in Oklahoma, what do I know?

    Sweet car!! Sounds like a lot work and expense if you want to keep it original, but it'll be sweet.

    What caught my eye was the white car in the background toward the right side of the picture. My first car was a black 1957 Mercedes Benz 220S and the car in the picture looks very similar. While it sounds like it would be a great first car my dad bought it out of a junkyard and it broke down constantly. Still have fond memories though.

    last time I was in LA I whipped into a grocery store parking lot where three--count 'em, three--Bentleys were parked. Wealthy arrugula-buying clientele around there, I guess. They were just people's cars, not Thurston Howell and his pals having a club meeting or anything.

    Why I mention it--they had some bad looking front calipers. Looked to be six puck fuckers (fuck puckers?) in hell-fire red wth nice subtle but serious lettering that read: Bentley. I wanted them calipers for myself. Well, the Bentleys too, but the puck pinchers at the least. I guess if they operate on hummingbird pee like yonder fella says they might not be practical, but damn, they looked good.

    Gorgeous car. Put a big bellybutton in it and forget about the reliability issues.

  19. Nice car, I love all the wood in those. Don't see ANY hotrods in that garage, what's up. Lot's of us have other cars, but hotrods are the most fun.

    I'll tell you what, I'll trade you my Lamborghini Gallarado for that Bentley there...If you want to come check it out it's parked right next to my 1990 LeBaron Convertible. I'm what you would call a conisewer of all things exquisite...

    Hi all,

    WOW this thread grew quickly. I appologize for the delay, as I posted this before I left for work today and just now returned. The car drove a very important foreign family around in the 50s-60s when they visited the US, perhaps 70s aswell as I found a 'visa' allowing these plates to be used in the US in 1976. I will tell the complete story once I have the photos and can scan them to show you all as I do not believe you would believe the story without some type of evidence. The car was then either gifted or sold to it's same 'care taker' all along and he dedicated his entire life to taking care of this vehicle, even as far as to include in his will the instruction to make sure his death certificate accompany the car. Which I, indeed have. The car was sold to the attorney to settle the caretakers estate, and I inturn purchased it from the attorney.

    These have always been my dream car I must have every small match box, lesney, hot-wheels car of one, and now - finally, I own one, a real one! Before I went off to sleep last night I took one last peek in that garage to remind myself.

    As far as price, it wasn't 'dirt cheap' and I wouldn't say I got a 'steal' on it, but rather for the type, quality, history and uniqueness of this one Bentley, I'd say I made out very well in terms of what it cost me.

    I had to purchase a small light bulb for one of the outside opera lights today and I went into an auto parts store with a large glass window. No one saw me pull up in it, or walk into the store. Once inside I located my bulb and walked to the counter to find every employee and every customer inside the building staring out the large glass window at the car ! I waited and cleared my throat, one of the employees heard me and says ' did you see this car out here? ' and I reply ' Yes, I pulled up in it! ' He he.

    To the person about the Mercedes, it is a '56 180, its a very, very fun car to drive it feels as if I am in the 50s. I was blessed to be able to acquire that car aswell. It truely is one of a kind.

    No, there are no real hot rods in this garage. I have other cars, but not too 'hot rod' material. - Although it is tempting to create a hot-rod out of my '37 Mercedes WWII Car. Hmm....

    Thanks for the compliments and interest everyone. I'll post more photos of the Bentley soon. Did you know they came with a factory flash light that plugs into the dash board? Interesting.
     
  22. Nice! that is either an S1 or an S2. Our family had an S1,1959 Long Wheelbase, one of 27 made. i know something about those cars ,my parents named me Bentley!

    Wouldn't be one of "Charlie's" many visits to the states to check out the "swinging" scene with the ladies would it?????? You know, that line from the song.... "Knocking me out with those american thighs".

    Bentley, after 1928, had no racing History of any sort until the lemans effort of a few years ago.
    The Bentley Soft top in the pic next to the transporter is actually a Volkswagon and they are commonly known as "Volkswagon Bentleys" in Europe.

    The S1 And S2 are a ponderous big tank which only an enthuisast could love . An R type is a far more interesting car but I applaud the Ponton 180.( flat head?)

    I was in Corktown for St.Paddys day at NancyWhiskey and saw either a rolls or bentley same color across from where we parked in a dilapidated crackhouse garage with some euro plates. Somebody from Det should go and scoop that ol'pimp ride up.......Coulda been the Jameson or the johnPowers clouding my sight too....

    Now this is a Bentley Hot Rod! ' The late Jumbo Goddards 8 liter Bentley.
    The Very first TwIn turbo powered car. This was no ricer effort. Jumbo bought the car when he was an Apprentice in 1928!!

    One of the first-ever turbocharged petrol cars, Goddard’s beast is fitted with two enormous Garrett blowers mounted below the twin three-branch cast manifolds. Bentley’s eight-litre six-cylinder engine is a rare thing. Just 100 were built before Rolls-Royce acquired the company in 1931 and, although it is notoriously inefficient, its design and refinement were sufficient to tempt an envious Rolls-Royce to bury the project.
    Goddard found his example just after the Second World War in a scrapped ambulance; it cost him £100. He already owned an earlier and much lighter 1924 Bentley three-litre from almost new. He had run through a tuning manual’s worth of performance options, including more carburettors and a supercharger, but then decided to fit the eight-litre powerplant. The work was entrusted to Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialist LG McKenzie, who rebuilt the engine and fitted it to the three-litre’s frame, which had been boxed in with another three-litre chassis to increase its stiffness. The car’s specification also included eight-litre axles, with telescopic dampers and hydraulic brakes. Panelcraft created sporting two-seater coachwork, with British Racing Green leather bucket seats to match the body and wheels. Goddard speed-tested the car at Antwerp in 1962, setting a flying kilometre speed of 222kph (138mph).
    This was clearly not enough, and Goddard befriended Wilton Parker, then vice‑president of the Garrett Corporation, maker of diesel engine turbochargers. Petrol turbocharging was in its infancy, with the first production example, the Oldsmobile Jetfire, launched in 1962. Goddard’s Bentley provided a stiff technological challenge for Garrett and for Don McKenzie, LG’s son, who had taken over the project.
    The result produced 550bhp at 4,000rpm and, with the boost pressure preset at 12 psi, 200bhp (at the wheels) at just 2,000rpm. Before he died, Walter Owen Bentley, the marque’s founder, saw the car in its turbocharged state and is reported to have said to Goddard: “You know, this is just the course of development that would have taken place if only we had stayed in business.”
    Goddard returned to Belgium in 1972 and, after overcoming difficulties with transmission lubricants, set a fastest time of 158.2mph. Most people who know the car reckon it is good for 170mph, although whether that would be on the ground or in the air no one really knows. Goddard enjoyed his monstrous machine well into his old age, doing sprints and the Brighton Speed Trials. He died in 1983 and the car remained with his widow until the late 1990s, whereupon it passed through several hands, including a spell at the Donington Park museum.
