A little advice to newbies

Discussion in 'Questions & Suggestions' started by seesko, Mar 29, 2009.

  1. There's some pretty good stuff and people :) here but it's also like Boot Camp at times.
Yer gonna get kicked in the balls or crapped on a few times:(.
Just learn to take it with a grain of salt and move on.
It's just like life. mostly good. a few 'gators that will bite:eek:.
    Hang in there. ;)
    Been there, so what.:D

    Seesko,

Been lurking for months now, love the place. This thread is actually what motivated me to register and start posting. I've noticed this too, but it's not always a bad thing. What would it be like if everyone was the same? It'd suck. Everyone has their tastes, and if someone doesn't dig what you've got, fuck 'em. My opinion about it anyways.

Though there's one thing that bothers me; being stereotyped by my age. I just turned 16, and some people think think that because of this they know everything about me. It's happened before and I'm 100% positive that it will happen again, but like you said, I take it with a grain of salt and move on.

    Good day, HAMB.

  9. Some further advice to the noobs, if I may:

    1) Read this:http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44274 Then read it again.

1a) Though the H.A.M.B. is generally tolerant of, and even at times interested in, certain off-topic (O/T) subjects...like old boats or signs, for example...we like them to be of a traditional or vintage nature. We aren't interested hearing about your McMansion built in 2009. There are Internet forums for most everything now, and regardless of how nice said mansion is, it won't fit in here. However, we might be interested in something else. For example, there is a great thread about older houses. Got one? Super. Post about it...in that thread, not a new thread, which will likely be dee-leted. Which leads me to...

    2) The search function is your friend. Look at it, learn it, live it. Learn to use it with some skill & thought. Typically, someone wants to know about, say, using a T-5...so they type in T-5 & get 20 pages of threads, which they can't be bothered to read...so they post yet another thread. If you want to use a T-5 behind your flathead, then try using both those terms...surprise yourself. :D

    3) Please don't join just to flog parts, or to pick our brains to find out what those parts are worth....the members get cranky.

    4) As holds true for any forum...lurk & read for awhile, before opening your cake-hole. There are certain topics on here that are sore spots. Rightly or wrongly, that's how it is. It doesn't mean that you need to be too terrified to post, but do some general reading first. ;)

    5) After you type something...re-read it BEFORE you hit the "Submit Reply" button. It's not required to have perfect grammar and spelling, but coherent thought IS required.

    6) An intro is always nice, and keeps you from being kicked around on your very first post.

    7) Don't feed Germ.

    8) By the same token, just because somebody has 1500, or 15,000 posts, doesn't mean they're a frickin' genius, or God. If you are correct about something, and can prove it, hold your ground. Photos are nice, as are schematics & references.

  10. Also dont mention the word rat ro*s it will get you in trouble. Dont say that a custom is not finished until the stainless around the windows is complete, that will get you in trouble.Dont make any remarks about the CURRENT trends of iron cross mirrors, pabst blue ribbon shiftknobs, rat fink antena balls, ungrinded welds, dirty whitewalls, plexiglass windshields, laying frame like a minitruck.Mentioning any of these will result in your thread being CLOSED.

I've picked this up through reading threads here, sometimes the lashings people are given are kind of unfair in my opinion, but hey, everyone has their tastes. Not that I'm for all of these trends or fads, but I think I'd rather see some unoriginal spiderwebbed, beer can riddled rod than a farting ricer piece of shit, (which seems to be all I see) any day, so it could be worse. I'll admit that I do like some rat rods, not that I want to build myself one, but there are some creative things that can be done with them. But with everyone trying to make their rat more radical than the next, it's getting out of hand and also unsafe... There was a thread on killbillet where a guy had made a grille out of old saw blades and there was a big debate over it. Oh well.

Maybe I should have just kept this to myself, maybe I'm getting off on the wrong foot, and if I'm pissing anybody off, I'm sorry. :p

  12. I thought that was a rather pissy bit of advice myself.

    hey fellas
same here been lurkin for a while, and finally registered. Had to say when I saw the killbillet name mentioned I had to log in. I was using killbillet for about a year, and kept hearing reference to the hamb or hambers or some variation thereof. It sounded like it pissed off some of those guys, so ya know I had to come check this party out. I love the threads, and there's a lot of variety. It seems like there's a ton more members on here too, i mean i can't keep up with the posts sometimes! wicked pissah !
and hey denver, 16 is the new 21 these days. By the time youre 20 you should have plenty of friends at the junkyards and parts stores. Just remember when you find a bard cache ya gotta let us all get 1st dibbs. jk
hey i bet before i get a 3rd post up somebody will be on my ass.
    Sweet!

You left out the most important thing.
    Show some class
When you need some help or advice (and you will) and get it here. Think about saying thanks.
Even if your mommy and daddy didn’t teach you that one.

  16. Just because you joined the hamb in 09 has nothing to do with being able to give advise for this msg board!!!!! Im 30 and been doing kustoms and hotrods since mid 90s. What, since you have been on the hamb longer you think you know more????? there is a lot more to cars then just the hamb and if you know your shit it dont matter how long you have been on this board.

Yes, since I have been on the HAMB for 3 years, it would make sense that I might know more about the HAMB than someone who has been here for a month or two. There definatley is a lot more to cars than the HAMB, but you guys are giving advice about surviving the HAMB, not building cars.

Here's some advice, read the post you are going to attack, then read it again. If after reading it twice, you are sure that you have a good idea of what the poster was saying, and still belive it to be untrue, then and only then, should you hit the reply button. Try not to twist the original post just so you can start an arguement.

By the way, I've got a few years on you, both in age, and in the old car hobby....you should also try to limit the assumptions you make.

Let me add here that 3 years does not make me an expert, but it does give me a step up on brand new members, as does the fact that I have done a whole lot more reading than posting in my time.

  18. It is not about starting a argument, its about me sharing my experience on here as far as the hamb closing threads for the topics I mentioned earlier.I was telling honest advice about things not to bring up on this board, then there is a comment about a 2009 join date? Like if your new to the hamb you shouldnt be giving advice??

    Don't take it seriously,
Just remember it is not real life, and don't worry about the internet tough guys, who are really nerdballz in a costume hiding behind a computer.
Have fun, and remember that you don't have to sink to the lowest common denominator in how you act or represent yourself just because you are behind a computer. Don't forget to represent yourself with some class.
Fighting with idiots will just bring you down to their level. I need to take my own advice.
    Best of luck.

The Hamb may seem harsh but it's worth it. Cleanses out the bullshit. There's good information here. The people, even the ones that haze new fellas, are good people. Just remember exactly what the Hamb is about at it's core and you'll be good.

You're still there, but it's sweet you're trying to help...

That was my first thought as well.

And for hell's sake, pay attention to Homespun's #7...you new guys don't have ANY idea how easy you have it. :D

Haha, I noticed that too. One month one the HAMB and nearing 600 posts. Jeeze, when do you have time to work on cars?

I'll tell on myself, sometimes since I work second shift and dont have the good sense to go to bed when I get here....I will type stuff without checking to see if I'm running my mouth at 36 grit, or 1000 grit. When I'm cranky, I have to check my typing and see if I can save an apology and some time. I never mean to offend, but I know I have. Not only check for thought process, but for flavor too.

I beg to differ here. It is actually part of real life. I was surprised when I had been on here a little while that a lot of people read this stuff and you will likely meet some of them at some point. If you're a dick on here, people in real life will know you're a dick.

You have a good point here. It is definitely OK to like all kinds of stuff. You just have to understand that this forum is geared to a certain genre. This isn't the place for either of the examples you give.

I have been here since August of 2005, this is my 9th post. I am here to learn, and look at lots of different cars built by lots of different people. I could have made thousands of posts tearing someone down for saying, or building something dumb. It just isn't the way I was raised. If I see something off topic, or on topic but way out of wack, I have a little chuckle and move on. There are a lot of "badass" dudes on here who appear to be here to talk smack and not do much else. Thats fine I guess, thats what makes it interesting. I was born with 2 ears, 2 eyes, and 1 mouth, so I try to watch and listen twice as much as I talk(at least when I am sober). You guys all have a great day, newbies and old schoolers alike.

  29. im new this year and ive made some mistakes. best way to learn. i look @ it like an apprentiship. itll sort out peoples metal. i got a lot to learn and always jump in balls n all. but ive also been round rods most of my life and feel i got something to contribute. im lucky i was raised right and give respect where its deserved. i love this place and intend on visiting the states in the future, so this is a great place to meet like minded people. thanks for reading my 2 cents.
