I guess that once the NHRA killed them off as Stockers they didn''t have much choice?? I wonder if the "Modified Production" thread could go 105 pages and counting..........
Bob, I would to but I don't think the time frame would fit in too well with the HAMB guys. To me the glory days of Modified were from the early to mid 70s to its demise in 81. Bob Rice
Speaking of Tulsa 68, here's a line-up of the Stock & Super Stock finalists. Left to right is Dave Boertman, Bill Izykowski and can you guess the Super Stock guys?
This is from waaay back on page 18. I believe this is the article that George Cureton is referring to. Also, here's a picture of the Pontiac prior to George buying it. Bob Rice, I believe you have some good color photos of the Pontiac with the Tokyo Rose paint scheme?
I'm not sure that is completely accurate. I first ran Modified Production (C/MP) in early 1964, the year that the "new category" was launched. I'm not sure what happened after 1965 when I had to step out.
Ok I got an intake! Now it's carb/linkage search time! THANK YOU Mr Jensen! actually i just got an idea i think i'll call the guys who bought the car from Mr Cureton again,i never thought of asking if he still had any parts off the car still at all. Ya never know!
Hey Colesy, Do you have any pictures of Carol Caudle and his car? An older guy in my hometown tells the story of going to the Winternationals in the late 60s and seeing Carol at the stripper bar till wee hours in the morning and racing hard and winning the next day. He said Carol had thick Buddy Holly glasses and sat down front on pervert row and had a good time. I'm not trying to say anything bad about him and the reason I tell this is because I think its cool how these guys lived and played hard with little or no corperate bullshit to deal with. They were the real deal! before drag racing sucked.
Carroll was a threat anywhere in Street Elems.I heard a rumor that the car was in storage in Amarillo still intact
Colesy that's a good idea for MP and SP,lot's of cool cars in those two classes Straightaxle65 my pleasure, saw Carroll race several times, hard car to get around
Here's a couple of George Cureton pics from the 1970 World Finals at Dallas. If you look closely you will see that George was driving Archambeault's wagon. Sorry that I hadn't posted them earlier.
I know that Modified started earlier than what I posted but to me that was the highlight for the eliminator. Bob Rice
Hey fendman post some more Carrol Caudle pics, in color if you have them. Here's the only shot I have of the car.<TABLE class=tborder id=post3763210 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=6 width="100%" align=center border=0><TBODY><TR vAlign=top><TD class=alt2 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #e5e5e5 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #e5e5e5 0px solid; BORDER-LEFT: #e5e5e5 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #e5e5e5 0px solid" width=175><SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_3763210", true); </SCRIPT> </TD><TD class=alt1 id=td_post_3763210 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #e5e5e5 1px solid"> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Congratulations on your find. This is the only pic I have of the car. I believe I got it from the Yahoo Super Stock group.
One year when the SS Nationals were held at Cecil County I went with my G/SA 67 Catalina. Freddie Borchardt held the record then with his FI 57 and he was there along with Ed Beyer's 58 with Dale Young driving. I had everyone covered by .15. In the class final Ed pulled Dale out of the car, jumped in and nailed my cocky ass to the tree. I ran over .10 quicker and got beat by 1/2 a car. Didn't hear the end of that for quite a while.
When Caudle and Paul Blevins both ran G/MP Carrol had held the record for some time. Paul reset it a little and Carrol got it back, also by a little. He then made a comment that got back to Bob Duffy, refering to Paul as "a record happy kid". Duffy got the normally very calm Blevins fired up. Paul and Danny Jesel put together a "grenade motor", went to Cecil County for the Divisional and bombed the record by 3 tenths, and to add to the insult, Duffy bought a full page ad in Dragster with a pic of the Nomad and the new ET and MPH record in 20 point type. I think 11.25/119, but I'm not sure. Caudle moved to C/MP after that while Paul built the Corvette. G/MP was empty for some time.
Good idea. There were plenty of cool MP cars I remember seeing. Can't wait to see what shows up on the thread.......
There was a guy in Jersey running a 55 hardtop in G/MP. It kept the radio heater and anything else to make weight. I think his last name was Zang. That car always sounded like it left the line at 10,000 RPM.
The first time I saw Ralph Ridgeway was at Connecticut Dragway in the Spring of 1966. I remember being really impressed with his intake manifold. He had used a '57 Corvette FI intake, cut the top off the plenum and welded a flat plate to mount two Holley's. That was, I thought, the first tunnel ram intake, but it seems that the Ramchargers had come up with something similar years before. The trip to Connecticut was to watch a match race between Bruce Larson in his '66 Chevelle and Bill Flynn's "Yankee Peddler" Barracuda.
Carroll Caudle early on maybe? No decals no "Carrolls Automotive" Just plain Jane Mike, only pic I have right now that I can find, you posted the other I found.
another strong G/MP car out of jersey, was good friend Pat Riccardi's former L/S 57 Chev. 2 door sedan "Pafoo Dragon" 287", doug nash 5 speed, dana rear that ran on or close to the record - favorite memories of Raceway Park was whwn they used to bring the M/P and Gas cars up the return road in front of the pitside stands before each round of the eliminator - always thought they should do that again at the old tyme drags in july!
