Ron Martin (Buffalo, NY) at Lancaster (NY) Speedway, 1973. This was the ex-Snyder Bros. coach (Bobby Hudson No. 10), reskinned to a Pinto in '73. Gordon Reinig photo.

Kim Gagliardi (son of Cam) at Lancaster (NY) Speedway, 1973. Gordon Reinig photo. In '72, this was Roger Treichler's coach. Sege Fidanza started the '73 season in this car (as a blue No. 77) and it later was sold to Gagliardi.

Another view of the 1971 dead-heat finish between Richie Evans and Roger Treichler at Lancaster (NY) Speedway. Both drivers took the checkered flag for a victory lap. Gordon Reinig photo. Check earlier pages in this thread for a color shot of this scene shot from the grandstands. GORDON REINIG PHOTO.

Here's mine. 1974 Nance Supermod with 300 Ford six. Always a 6 cyl. car. Will be attending vintage races in the midwest with it this season. Big fun.

Nice looking race car! Do you mind if I post it on a short track models forum? I would like to see more pics of it, if possible.

Here's a photo of Lakewood Raceway in Atlanta back in the day. Lakewood was 1 mile dirt oval where many an early stock car racer (moonshiner) started his racing career. Check out some of the cars in the distance. Lot of early iron was used up this way.

It is interesting to see the 567 chevs being used as push cars/support vehicles, knowing that 10-15 years later they will be the ones being raced...

Through the 1960's Chemung ran the "Bugs," which were home built cars that were limited to six-cylinder motors. The #188 was driven by Earl Bodine and it was built and maintained by his brother Maynard Bodine. Both of these men being Uncles to Geoff Bodine, one of NASCAR's greats. Geoff's father, Eli was the owner of the "Speedrome" as it was known.

The nitro bottle theory, while possible is not likely. The dominance of the Bodine #188 was more likely the combination of the mechanical expertise of Maynard and driving skills of Earl. The slant six Plymouth engine made a lot of power and was able to turn higher RPM's than some of the competition who even used flat head engines. Earl did most of his passing in the corners as his car would ride the cushion and he could keep the RPM's up while other tried to slide through the middle and bottom. He drove the dirt like it was asphalt, which by mid race it nearly was.

    Regards,

I would agree. I raced at Chemung in the 60s and heard all those stories as well. As is the case at many tracks its hard to beat the "house" car.

The Drakes Cake thrower was Marty Kessler. He was a Drakes Cake salesman.
