Hey Hemisteve...that old delivery is still around and looks the same as it did back then. He's in York, PA every year for the Street Rod Nat's. I think it has the same wheels still on it??

Does anybody know Paul Gommi? I really want to know what size the rims are on his 32 roadster.

What everyone seems to call "Milk truck Wheels" were never on Milk trucks. Originally all roads were dirt. Wagons made ruts and the horses pulling them trod down the centers.
As cars came in, they made the ruts deeper, but there weren't as many horses pounding down the center crown. By 1935 cars got lower and on deeply rutted roads, cars started having oil pan problems hitting the center crown. So all the auto makers came out with 18" and 20" wheels to raise your car up so the oil pan would clear the road. By 1939 the NRA (National Recovery Act started because of the depression) had paved the roads. So people threw away their tall wheels and put originals back on. That's why these wheels are so rare. The ones on my roadster are Dodge. 18" on front and 20" on the rear. I have an original ad showing the wheels on a 36 Dodge car. The bolt pattern is 5 on 4 1/2" so I had to redrill my Ford hubs and axles and make the hub caps from Doge rings welded to moon caps with welded on centers to clear the Ford spindles. On my 32 phaeton I am building, I have the Ford pattern 18" wheels they call Divco although they were never on Divco milk Trucks. Someone made up a story and it stuck.

  5. I've got a pair of these 15" x 6" Crestline wheels that I've been trying to find another matching pair for. These are 5-on-4-1/2" BP w/4" backspacing.

I've been looking for nearly ten years for a matching pair, so right now, I'm pretty convinced I have the last two in existence. No one has proved me wrong by coming up with another pair for sale anywhere!

I have one pair of really rare tires. They are Mickey Thompson Sportsman 31x16.5-16s. At the bottom of the photo is a 14x4.5 ET that was narrowed long ago. On top is a 135R-15 Michelin.

Here's another pair of 16x13 Halibrands. These were on the Dunn & Reath rear engine funny car. I have one single 16x13 as well. Anybody else have a single they want to sell?

Saw this wheel on craigslist awhile back.
Said it was a Johnson wheel made in Portland Oregon in the mid 60's.

I don't know if I would want any "johnsons" on my ride.

  22. I was thinking the same thing. YUK. Maybe on a beach buggy. ( use your imagination)

  23. A lady gave me these old 17" 6 lug wheels, tires were history so I tossed them. They are going on my tilt trailer someday.:)

The wheels are accessory wheels sold by the manufacturers in the 30's to raise the cars up that were having oil pan problems on deeply rutted roads. By the late thirties, the NRA (National Recovery Act ) paved all the roads and people didn't need the wheels anymore, so they put their original stock wheels back on. That's why they are so rare.
My particular wheels were for Dodges, Plymouths and Chryslers. They are 18" and 20"
with a 5 on 4/1/2" bolt pattern. I re-drilled by hubs and axles that pattern. For my Phaeton, I have a set of the Ford 18", 5" on 5 1/2" wheels. They call these "milk truck" or "Divco" wheels although they were never on Divco Milk trucks, or any other trucks I know of. I have an original Dodge Factory literature & photo for these wheels. Thanks for the interest. Paul
