Sedan delivery, Passenger car or truck?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Lobucrod, Apr 1, 2009.

  1. ---- and when they issued me plates they were truck plates.

I'd try to get whatever plates work best for you, maybe better to have truck plates and a write off as business expense hauling your insulation around in it.

Thanks, thats exactly what I was looking for. I guess if I ***le it that way I'll have to have the empty weight and carrying capacity listed on the ***le too.

Interesting thread my 57 Chevy has always been tagged as a car. It
was originally built as a 150 2 door wagon and the delivery panels/braces
were added by a PO before I got it in 1975. Still has the wagon tailgate/
liftgate tho. Seems like they'd have better things to do that split hairs on 50+ year old vehicles...

In OK, if it has side windows, it is a car, regardless if it's a Suburban or whatever. If it is a panel or sedan delivery, it's a truck.

    Yeah, there are exceptions.

  8. As was said earlier;it will vary from state to state.I came from M***achusetts and sedan deliveries were considered trucks and required commercial plates. In 1968 in M***achusetts,a p***enger car registration was a fixed price and commercial vehicles were charged by GVW(gross vehicle weight)at $5 per thousand pounds.
Being an economist(read cheap sonofa*****)I questioned why I couldn't register it as a p***enger car being that it was built on a p***enger car ch***is.The official response was that I could PROVIDED THAT:I installed a rear seat and cut windows into the panels.I found a seat from a 60 Chevy two door wagon that bolted in but refused to cut the panels.I tried painting faux windows on them but they didn't buy it.
I also owned several Pinto Cruisin' Vans and they could be registered as p***enger cars because they met the aforementioned criteria.
In Michigan they would technically be required to have commercial plates but with the issuance of so many different styles of plates now here I have seen many trucks(including my GMC Syclone)with what amount to p***enger car plates. If you have lettering on the truck(as a business logo)I believe you must have commercial plates.
Basically you better check with your local DMV or get a copy of the General Laws that pertain to automobiles(Chapter 90 in M***achusetts).
Another difference in Michigan where you are allowed to run year of manufacture plates:I believe the only requirements for this are the car must be at least 25 years old and you have to submit a request through the Secretary of State with a photocopy of the plate to make sure it isn't being currently used. They have changed the fees and the length of time the plates are valid:When I registered my 55 Safari in 1994 the fee was $15 and the plates were valid for 5 years and they issued you a sticker. It was later changed to a $35 fee but the plates never expired and there was no sticker required. They changed it again to a 10 year validation which is the same as the Historic Vehicle tags are.Supposedly it was changed again back to the non expiring version.I don't know as my plates will never expire.

safariknut, I hope you're right about them now being non-expiring. When I finally put historic plates on the cpe in 04 they were only good for 10 years

Just went and looked at the Secretary of State web page. Historical are still for 10 years.

Well I went by the tax office with all the paper work I got from the DMV to see how I could register it and what it all was going to cost. I blew them away when I told them it was a sedan delivery. They said 'whats that?'. I told them its like a 2 door wagon with no back windows. She told me I would have to register it as a p***enger car then. Man its a **** shoot dealing with those people. I got 30 days to get it done before the surety bond runs out. Hopefully when I go back I will have all the little ducks lined up in a row.

You need to check with your state motor vehicle division to see what they have, or are using for vehicle designations. Here in colorado they don't have a truck plate, or ***le designation any more. Even for heavy vehicles. So for tax purpose they go by weight only. So they might not even have a sedan or delivery designation. I know when I ***led my 28 chevy the original ***le said coach. But they no longer recognized that and changed it to 28 chevy 2D which is fine by me. Cause I made it into a sedan delivery. And what do I care as long as I have correct paperwork...GHOST

  16. Check the cost of the car license vs. a truck license. In Calif. a truck license costs more than a car license.

I finished the ***le work yesterday. Gave up and called it a 2 door and ***led it as a p***enger car. That was the only thing the girl at the ***le office understood. At least I have a ***le on the way. I can always do a correction on it later.

  19. When I bought my old 57chevy sedan del in Louisiana they made me buy a truck tag. Cost me $10. Cars were $6. But that was 1971

I have a 1952 Ford sedan delivery and its the first year production of the "Ford Courier" All the insurance papers list it as PNL so who knows? I have always refereed it as a sedan delivery or Courier. One of the above response said a station wagon without windows and I also have given that description when talking about

Sedan delivery, hence the word "sedan" is a car. A panel truck, hence the word "truck", is a truck.

Mad, Its going to be our 'company car'. We'll use it to haul our insulation, mexican blankets and trailer load of parts to swap meets. Hence the need for the nailhead torque monster. Also daily trips to FedEx and USPS to ship. It will be nice to have an old Hot Rod that I can use for a tax right off.

The thing is it was originally ***led as a truck as it still has '66 truck license plates on it. Just trying to keep it as it was.

It does matter in CA whether it is ***led as a car or a truck. If it is registered as a truck you have to have it weighed before you can register it and then you pay a higher rate of vehicle license 'fee' - tax by any other name - every year, because it is cl***ified as a commercial vehicle. CA government regularly abuses the word 'fee' to get around laws which prevent them from raising taxes.

I even had to have a Ford Ranchero weighed - damned thieves!

I had a '48 Chev. sedan delivery, ***led in OH as a car. Chrysler Corp. built them on both car and truck ch***is in the mid-'30's, so who knows. They're still cool.

I have both the lights on mine. ...I know the car is uncommon but didn't know the tail light bases were that rare... cool.

Also, I haven't pulled the ***le out in a while but I believe mine says sedan delivery truck on it and I'm in OK.

Been trying to sell it but I guess I want outrageous money for my sedan delivery... if that is the case I will be keeping it!:D

    Good luck with it!
