Yep. Some racers set up the car so the motor sees more ambient air than ram air. Hence the "covers" you see on lots of the cars running multiple Strombergs. I've been told by more than one carb builder that Strombergs like ambient air rather than ram or forced air.

OK, here are some photos of my late Grandfathers dragster which I restored and it is a regular participant in NHRR cacklefest. I believe both of these photos are from around 1961. While it was a slingshot when he retired around 1965, it was initially a rear engined bellytank. For more photos and history on the dragster see link in my signature...

  3. Everyone else's hat is on backwards, that one is correct. Experimentation proved that putting the hat on with the opening in the back solved a lot of tuning issues and made the car faster and more consistent.

Apparently the car developed a wheel stand problem when the relatively light weight magnesium rear end was replaced with an Olds unit.

Don Garlits put a sheetmetal cover over the eight Strombergs in Swamp Rat I because the air rushing over the inlets siphoned gas out of the throats via the venturi effect.

At least that's what he told me.

  7. True...same thing happened on early open wheel sprinters running strombergs...could make a filthy mess...

Damn. TWO FEDs? Hell comes to HRCC, huh? Is one of these any relation to the one Lucky was talking about when I showed up for the open house last year a day early?

Hell was always here. You've seen Helen Wheels, right? :D

Maybe. I've been collecting parts for one for about a year. Just getting enough stuff to actually put it together.
