Yea they say that in the Demo derby world too! It's called a GREY AREA or thats what they TRY to call it! For those guys i call it A LAME ASS EXCUSE for those who CAN'T DRIVE!
That wasn't MY Cobra-Jet! It belonged to a guy named Larry Prichard who asked me to drive it at the race. I actually lost TWICE, once in the semi's where I got back in when the other guy got thrown out for being 50 lbs. light, then again after losing the final when Wood got bounced in tech by Greg X for having spring shackles that weren't stock! That was when stock meant really stock. The Div. Director, Darwin Doll, really went off on the guy who teched Wood's car originally for not catching it before he ever made a run.
For 1956 Carter 2419S front & 2326S rear Most of the time though the brass tags are long gone. On early 56 the airhorns cast #6-1114,or 6-1122, or late 56 is #6-1151 or 6-1203. Main body casting # 1-1387A Short aux.air valve lever 1 13/16" w/thin.290 weight. Only the rear has choke. And both throttle bellcranks have 2 small holes not 1 big one...
Gary Wood was a regular at our local track.Sharp Pontiac guy.His wife Charlene won Sanair with the Tons of Fun station wagon. That the car you talking about? I still see Gary occasionally. He was wheeling and dealing in record albums and now he is into buying/selling guitars, last I knew.
NO. Gary had a couple of leaf spring Birds. One I remember was a second gen., but the one in question, I think was first gen. What does the picture show?
Here's a pic of Ronnie Sirianni's earlier effort... Btw, my entire collection of Raceway News is up for sale. One-hundred four issues plus one York U.S. 30 Drag News from 1969. Most issues 1970-74. I don't mean to be off-topic...just figured I'd let you guys in on it first before I put it in the classified section and elsewhere. Regards, Pete peterk426@gmail.com or private message
Yep,Gary started with Firebirds. Not sure but I think that the wagon had coil springs.Should have put those 2 together. So,what does the picture show?
Hey man check for this page! No idea what magazine it's from, could be Raceway News. I'll pay if you have it! -Dean
Maddman, did you find the info on the 57 "Sir Nomad" M/P Harold Dunn car yet anywhere?? SOMEBODY has to have pictures of it and proably on here!!!
Hey Pete ,see if you have the issue with the results of their Fall Nationals in '72. Stock "Winner" was running a 454 all year long, claimed to be building a 402. Won the final then drove out the back gate. At this race the winner of S/S cups ,also out of the same speed shop changed from a holley to whatever carb was legal for the car after the final. He later ran a couple of Camaro's in A/SA and SS/EA and is currently handeling maintaince on an A/SA Camaro that looks alot like the one he ran.It has or is now,i'm not sure ,wearing #1 onthe window.Maybe a current racer can confirm this but I was an eye witness.

Maybe drove to tear down building,I didn't go the next couple of weeks so I didn't get the official explanation, but he vanished off the face of the earth.
I've been away from this great thread for a few weeks and had a bunch of catching up to do. One thing that caught my attention was this 1966 ad for a G/S '58 Delray 2 door with a 270HP 283. At that same time we were running a G/S '58 Delray 2 door with a 250HP 348. Our advertised HP/weight ratio came in at 14:00 putting us at the very top of the 14:00 to 14:99 G/S band, that's why we picked that combo. The '58 in this ad has the higher HP (270) lighter weight 283 and is still in G not F/S. What am I missing? We were at Niagara which was switching from NHRA to NASCAR at the time but I think the G/S band was the same in both groups. I'm confussed - or just old - not sure which. Lee
I remember one Sunday Sunday Sunday at Niagara when we pulled in the staging lanes with our '58 G/Stocker. I looked over a few lanes and there was this little yellow plain jane Falcon sitting there with what I thought I remembered was B/S on it, guess it must have been C/S. Thought to myself how it that little thing in that high of a class, Then he did a burnout pulling up to the line. That answered that question. That little thing was wicked. And speaking of Canandian race cars in general, we were weren't we. There was this nice couple that used to drive their G/S '64 chevy over from Ontario to Niagara. We got to know them through the season and talked about the impovements in headers, etc, they were doing to there car to improve their times. I was amazed to find out that they had to pay 50% on top of what we bought the same parts for in the states. So a $100 set of headers would cost them $150. Talk about a disadvantage. Plus there was the currency exchange rate on top of that. I'm sure a lot of parts got installed state-side before the trip back over the bridge because of it. Lee
Lee, Don't feel bad about (occasional) confusion. Now-a-daze I'm lucky if I have occasional bouts of lucidity! In 1966 the NHRA 11.89-12.49 weight break was for F/S In 1966 the NHRA 12.50-13.99 weight break was for G/S In 1966 the NHRA 14.00-14.99 weight break was for H/S In 1967 the NHRA 12.50-13.99 weight break was for F/S In 1967 the NHRA 14.00-14.99 weight break was for G/S In 1967 the NHRA 15.00-15.59 weight break was for H/S
The Manarina Olds (Tonawanda, NY Olds Dealer) was maintained and driven by Jim Proefrock. Jim gave us some pointers on setting up our '58s rear coil spring suspension. By doing a few tricks it allowed more movement and I guess put more down force on the rear end. The first time I dumped the clutch it scared me - felt like I was being thrown forward in the seat. With that done and the torque of the 348 the car was killer out of the hole, if only we had a top end. The "stock" as in unbuilt 348 just didn't have the Rs at the other end and kind of flattened out. I've read that Jim later went in to fuel altereds and that Jim passed away in 2006. I'll always remember him as a real nice guy willing to help out us newbies just getting started. Lee
The 2nd photo of the Manarina Olds looks to be shot at Aquasco Speedway in Maryland. -Lee Atomic Radio www.atomicpinup.com
