this little beauty came to us sporting a sweet flatty with a flat-o-matic c-4 in it.. said flatty developed a little rattle of sorts..so.. being the kind of guy that i am... it's getting a sbc/turbo350 stuffed in where the flatty used to reside.. it came with mustang 2 type front end.. the car is already bagged.. we are going to clean that up with hard lines and slight change in the way the bags in front are mounted.. when we get thru that part.. 4 link rear/ 9 inch.. so... i'm off and running..

Out with a classic and in with another boat anchor! I could see Olds-Cad or lincoln but to do another lame crate job on a classic 52 is boreing.

If you stuff in a Caddy it would be a Fordillac but now you'll have to call it a Fordrolet, thats a bummer.

  12. I would take a flathead with a rattle, squeak, skip, chug, or leak any day of the week.

At least dress the SBC up with some early vette script valve covers or something

  13. the question remains! what did you do with the flattie?

It's a nice car untill you but a sbc in it then it's just a belly*****on.

  16. My bet is he swapped it for some killer red anodised billet bolt ons for that wildly unusual SBC he is going to run.

  17. From where I sit I see a nice driver already equiped with nice paint, MII and bags. A sbc for rock solid depndability on long cross country hauls is cool by me. A car like that should sit around with the hood closed because it's dirty as hell from driving. That flat motor needs to be in a hot rod anyway.

    Oh and you*****!! Feel better?

From where I sit, I see yet another cookie cutter build..Sure it may be "reliable" and just "lovely" but it sure ain't inter-estin'...

Oh well we all can't be creative.

Hey, can somebody pass the popcorn?

You talk about reliability the club I belong to is all chevy powered . Thy carry parts for the road every thing. Last time going to York one broke a rocker. Sure enugh anticipating the chevy brake downs one of the guys had a sbc rocker. reliability in numbers.

Are we restorers or hot rodders?

Flathead's got character, no doubt. Chevy's got another hundred horse and ft-lbs, no doubt.

To be fair though, the flathead in the other lane will make pleasant sounds as it's driver watches chevy powered taillights disappear over the horizon ;) If you're gonna get your**** handed to ya, it might as well have a pleasant soundtrack.

Weird bunch of hoodlums around here. Hope your library cards are securely fastened when racing chevies, cause the doors are about to be blown off.

  22. A wise man once said: "Hoods are for cars that don't have flatheads".
I vote for a Nailhead. Fix the rattle and put that flathead in a hot rod-so it can be seen, as well as heard!

Oh puh-leeeeze. What a bunch of whiney old farts! Complaining about a small block not being traditional is getting old. There isn't a more traditional swap going, not to mention that it isn't THEIR car, and you're doing it for a customer, who wants something dependable. Load it up with vintage goodies like finned valve covers, rams horn manifolds, 3 2's or two small 4's, it's period correct, rock solid dependable, easy to build and maintain.

I'm gonna get down off the soap box and go fire up the Big Cad in my '36 for the first time now...

Great point. When did this start to have rules? Most restorers are a WHOLE lot less prejudiced against non conformity than this.

OK, NOW I'm really gonna go out and fire up the Caddy...:D

    I like it...

I'd bet if you parked that Ford next to another Ford, and kept the hood closed, NO ONE...got that...no one would know which Ford had a Ford engine in it and which had a Chevy in it...no belly*****ons there.

Now if you park two FLAT BLACK Fords and add a couple of flat black '50 Chevys, a couple of flat back Oldsmobiles and a flat black Buick next to each other and keep the hoods closed...you'd definitely have BELLY*****ONS.

An SBC came out in 1955...that alone makes it traditional...

It looks like I might be the first one to catch the fact that it isn't his car. That said, give the customer what he wants, and take that junkie worthless flathead off his hands, and go so far as to be a really, really nice car guy and "dispose" of it for free...right into your own garage!:D

An observation I have made over the years is that the very guys that say "traditional rods" must have a Flathead, Caddy or Nailhead engine are the same guys running a Flathead or Nailhead roadster with late model disc brakes and radial tires. Those very same guys are going to bash my 37 Ford because I have a small block Chevy in it, a vintage 65 Corvette 327 mill is not worthy in their eyes, it's just another "belly*****on" boring SBC.

I'm happy to see the second page of this thread a bit more positive. No rules to hot rodding and an SBC is traditional enough for me. Of course that aint sayin much. Nice car by the way

I would stick with a flatty any day of the week. BTW what did happen to the flatty haha. SBC can be traditional its just so many have been done it gets old. I would rather run a 1/4 mile time of need a calender instead of a stop watch and have a top speed of 65 just to run a flatty.
