Now that takes me back. When I got out of the service in '72 I bought one exactly like it, right down to the color at a Bell telephone co auction. God knows how many mile was on it, but I took off across country and lived in for months. The starter went out somewhere in the south west and I didn't have the money to fix it so I would either park it on a hill, or employ a few of the local hippies who were always willing "to help a brother out" with a push. What an adventure!

They've been hotrodding and customizing these since they first appeared in the early 60's

The Hamb has always been about early customs and hotrodding.

Yep, and so does everything else..

    Sheesh! lighten up!

Old timers on the JJ seem pretty resistant to early vans being traditional hot rod material. I've been PM'd "don't you belong on some van site, anyway?" That's OK. I would go there if there were any as cool as the Journal. Unfortunately they're pretty lame, and many seem to be full of some leftover hippies that talk about van-ins and such. But I did take the van avatar down as it semed OT in many members eyes.

If you have interest in both hot rods and vintage trucks, the 60s van thing sort of straddles the two in a way. My A100 isn't a Scooby Doo job or a hippie van, it has a v8, headers and Edlebrok manifold and 4bbl and it's scary fast and requires a minor deathwish to drive. No power steering, no power brakes. Kind of like the thrill of drivin' a hot rod without spending all the dough it takes to obtain a decent project. This was free, and it has a drag racing (push vehicle) background at some local strips, which I found pretty cool. It ain't exactly traditional, but it works for me for fun.

But to take it elsewhere we could use the new JJ site features and start a social group for old vans and stepvans and get outta the way a bit, but still be a part of the scene without ticking off the old guard like manyoldcars who get tired of newbies trying to change things. Just a thought.

Although I see he has a 60's pickup with a 460, which is damn cool and sort of in the same vein as an old van, kinda sorta.

The second I saw the first picture it reminded me of my dad stopping home in his bell telephone van. The nasty "telephone truck green" paint on the inside just nailed it. I can still remember goin' for a ride around the block sittin' on the engine cover and the sound of that little six ticking away undrneath it.
Man, that was a lifetime ago.

Same as there are bobbers, 2-ton haulers, bread vans, panel deliveries, sedan deliveries, late '60s and early '70s drag cars, station wagons, four-doors, limos, funeral cars, and many more on the HAMB...

    So, what's your point?

Now all you have to do is Write Free Candy on the side and tour your local playgrounds

  19. Vans and panels before them have been part of hotrodding since the begining.....just look at the early SCTA photos, and they will always have a place in hotrodding,I understand how some of you young kids dont get it,you are just going off what you think it was like.I was raised around it from the early 60s...........they have a place in our history

my plans for it are to tighten the steering, turn signals and brake lights, stripe it and drive it! when my roadster is done ill tear into this thing.
being a striper it is a perfect advertising vehicle and great to take to the shows with all my paint in the back. a good friend of mine (J-bird) another great striper has a sweet looking econoline with his studio name on the side and graphics all over it.

I was walking out of the Advanced Auto in Macedonia, when this guy sees me getting in my older daily. He asks if I want a 65 Econoline Van. I have no room for another car, so i call Dave(chrome daddy-o) who looks at it and it finds it's way to SniffinPaint....cool. Who knew it go so soon. Glad it got a good home. SniffinPaint, how about paining "strangers have the best candy" on the side of her? And also, how many more newbies want the name G***er 57....WTF? Have fun, it should haul some paint..
