The original name I posted for this thread was- My Favorite SAM Barris photo (see 2nd post) I wished that I had not changed it,as it went off into too many directions-Sorry SAM
Sorry for not posting on here very often, I do get on here though from time to time. I just got on here today and caught this thread. <O</O The Quarters were filled with lead and was melted out in the fire. He didnt change them, he just didnt want to fill them with bondo, cleaning them up was the simplest way to fix the car back in the 70s I didnt have these photos, thanks for posting them. I'd love to see others if anyone has them.
Great photo. The old Barris shop. I have to drop my hood off there Monday. Of course, the Barris's are gone. But Brad Masterson is making good use of the space.
Booya! I saw the Van up in Toronto Canada last year in a place that collects and restores vehicles. Lots of cool funky stuff in there.
I think that car was done after mine. Rear windows are taller and the chop isn't a radical. The top does follow the same curves at the rear This 40 also has no rain gutters ..... must have been easier to do an therefore less expensive for the customer They do look like sisters.
I almost thought this car was the golden sahara.... it's uncanny how similar it is to barris' wecked 53... just the plates, wider whites and the hardtop.. (photo of wreck from riksters site)
As in the Nethercutt Collection/Museum? Megan and I have been trying to make time to visit there during one of our trips to SoCal but just haven't found the time yet. I really want to make the effort next trip for sure. I'ver really enjoyed this thread. Thanks to all who contributed.
Man, this last page illustrates the brothers differences very plainly. S.B. seems to have really had a p***ion for line and form and craftsmanship. G.B. seems to consider the automobile as a novelty and/or a promotional tool. In as much as I can relate to (Sam's) artistry, I think it's important to have a good sense of (George's) humor. I wish there was more written about Sam....
i just pissed my pants and spit g**** pop on my screen!!! lol where do i get some pimp clothes like that......
Always nice to see color photos from that era, never realized the Chet Herbert car was that color combination...
Just finished up the art work for my next DVD about Barris and his photography... I wish you guys could of been a fly on the wall when I was going through all these pix... working on the DVD don't have a release date.. most likly August / September if all goes well...
I got too see the original photo album of these shots on Friday... its truly amazing... should be released as a book..
You could cut through mild steel with those pants pleats. I love the one with the hacksaw at the a pillar of Sams Mercury.
No, this is Ken Larry don’t do computers, if his wife and kids didn’t force it on him, he wouldn’t have a cell phone either.
I was wondering the same thing. The Nethercutt Collection in Sylmar is unbelievable, but I don't recall any customs there. Their restoration shop is unlike anything I've seen before; top notch and extremely comprehensive. http://nethercuttcollection.org/Home.aspx I can't believe I missed this thread back in April, great photos!
I have knowen since i was little Sam Barris was the Barris that has the tallent to built the cars and not George. As a builder myself i realy did not have much respect for George for many years. But now as a shop owner i realy realize that Sam Barris and others that worked with theme would not have gotten noticed as a famous builder with out Georges help in promoting there Company. You can build the koolest cars but if the rest of the world does not know about them you be forgoten fast. So now i have a great respect for George and Sam. This is one of my favoriet George Barris pic's. At a show a few years back George asked us to bring our cars to his booth. Wow that will be a day we will never forget. Thats my wife Carol Erickson with George and her 49 merc and my 53 ford. GB & Thanks, Rick & Carol Erickson of EXK EXTREME KUSTOMS www.ericksonskustoms.com
EXK, the reason George wanted you to park your cars at his booth is because they are *****in' rides and he wanted to tell everyone he built them! I saw the POS prius at Santa Maria and threw up in my mouth a little every time that hack drove by in it. I have no problem with self promotion but I have heard more than a few guys talk about George taking credit for other peoples work. I don't think I've ever heard the man talk about his brother, if you were to believe him you would think he was the only Barris and that he did all of the work he takes credit for by himself. Let's hear it for SAM BARRIS the REAL king of the Customs!
By the way EXK that was not an attack on you so please don't be offended. I saw your shop truck and Santa Maria, you do some truly *****in' metal work!
