I didnt see them, i guess the thread got deleted. Please dont get this one closed too...must have been from cars outside the show.

I sat with the shifters for a while on friday morning (In my pajamas, haha). I could see how it is hard to keep the show 100% period perfect when it reaches the size that it has. You have to have someone posted at the gate from 8 to 8 for wed, thurs, friday, and sat. I saw him turn away a bunch of O.T. cars, but theres always a few that will get in the second he turns around or goes to take a piss. Plus its really hard to tell someone that just drove hundreds of miles from another state that they cant come in.
That being said, I think the quality of cars was a lot better this year (not just saying that cause he's my buddy)
The Hustlers FED was freakin nuts. It made the ground shake. and the polynesian II was bad ass also.

I was thinking the best solution to the "quality control" issue would be to have a lot A and lot B. No one would be turned away and they may even try harder or get a clue so they can be in the "premium" lot next year.

I think this year will be my last VLV too. I've had several of my VLV photos used in magazines/books and mind you they weren't photos of the "crap", but some great cars, most of which didn't show up this year. After walking down about two isles of cars I put my camera away. Major disapointment. The cars, the crowd, the costs just didn't seem to make it worthwhile this year. But hopefully the other photojournalists, that need to be reminded of what's really shoot worthy, got some good shots, and will continue to help publicize this event.

There was not one single Camaro or 4x4 in the show. I love how people are knocking the show saying how shitty it was when they were not even there.

Does this clown actually think they let Camaros and 4x4's in ??? You can't control what is in the regular parking lot and not the car show.

    Jesus........It was a GREAT show.

I know I didn't take any pics of Camaros or 4X4's, there weren't any in the show. Maybe out in the parking lot. Last year after Billetproof I mentioned there was about ten billet wheeled street rods at the show. I thought the promoter was just getting lazy. Alan and KIRK! informed me that there's a certain segment of car people who get off by sneaking into shows even though they don't belong.

I thought that was pretty weird, then I saw it happen at the Hunnert Car Pileup last year. This guy with a shoebox on 20" polished blades got turned away outside the gate. He waited around all day and finally snuck into the show. Then on the way out he made some smartass remark to Django who was thanking everybody as they left. So keep that in mind, besides running the entire show the guys also have to watch out for rogue elements trying to infiltrate the compound.

  9. I've been to VLV. It's a freak show, full of weirdos who say Look at ME! So what, the promoters have brought out some amazing shows. The year I say Bill Haley's old Comets was worth all the twerps with 2-toned hair who stood in front of my wife and stepped on my toe. The Comets, all in their 70s, showed what rock&roll was supposed to be like. I visited Axle's car show and had a good time. It was full of weidros, showing their asses and making a mess. The people and cars I like were there as well. But, it was just part of the VLV circus. I'd go again, but I wouldn't take a car I would be pissed if it got scratched.

So, that's my take on the car show, from afar. Axle and Celeste put their souls into the events they do. If Axel is throwing a show, and I can get there, I'm there. Never had a bad time. So, there.

I think the pics you are refering to are some cars that didnt make it in or didnt pay to get in and just hung out in the parking lot. I saw the same pics you are talking about and yes those where out in the parking lot outside the show.

First and foremost, There were no Camaro's or 4x4's allowed to park in the show, so i have absolutely no idea what Las Vegas car show you were at.

Second, some keep mentioning "fashion show" or people "dressed up". For those that just got in to this - IE cars, music, going to car shows, etc, etc. This is different than any other event in the country. Most (not all, but MOST) people that attend Viva Las Vegas are in to a vintage lifestyle . In other words its a lot deeper than someone putting on a pair of jeans and a Mooneyes T-shirt. A lot of these people come from all over the entire world, live in vintage homes with 40's & 50's furnishings, listen exclusively to obscure vintage RocknRoll,Rhythm & Blues, Doo Wop, and Jazz, wear vintage attire 24-7, and yes many have an old car in their garage. Thats what this event is all about for many attendee's, so why should that be so unusual? Yes, there are the "out of the norm people" that attend with excessive tattoo's,mohawks, or skimpy bathing suits, but its Vegas , and theres a part of mystique in that town where one can "Look and feel" the way they want.

Third, April May, sorry you feel the way you do. May i ask what cost's you are referring to? Is it the measly $5.00 car show entrance fee?

Lastly, Like i stated in my own thread, There were close to 800 cars in attendance. So for many different reasons approx. 40 got in that were "questionable" . You think other alternative shows like the LSRU, Billet Proof, Primers nats, Hunnert car pile up, or Paso doesn't have that?

After talking to the co producer of the show i think we have come up with some great solutions to continue to bring up the quality of the car show. For the most part, cartoonish post 1934 fenderless vehicles will be something of the past.

Thanks and have a great weekend. Axle

What many HAMBers also seem to forget or never knew, is that for a long time when the the world was into graphics emblazoned Street Rods and Customs were out, the Hep-cats you deride were still buildin' and runnin' traditional Hot Rods and Customs. Sure there are Pretenders, Posers and Wannabes as with anything that has become trendy, but for many it's about a lifestyle of dedication to what most of us here at the HAMB dig.

I just can't believe that someone thought there were Camaros & 4x4's allowed.

Axle- Not the cost of entrance, I had a wristband. But the cost of traveling, which isn't relevant directly to the car show, but plays a major role on my attendance. Also, I want to be clear, I'm not second guessing all the hard work you guys put in, or your efforts to maintain and uphold quality. I've been going to the car show since I was 16, and every year I've made sure not to miss it. It's probably responsible for starting my "career". My third year shooting it, Rod&Custom bought my photos. Since I'm from the Northwest, I don't get too many opportunities to get down south to shows. But I always made VIVA my priority, because it always brings a large assortment of cars from all over. But after 7 years, things have changed slowly. And my complaint isn't about the few shit piles being let in, but more or less an observation that some of the awesome cars that use to show up every year are dropping out progressively, but not completely. But that can be happening for many reasons, priorities change.

As a spectator it's a good show. But, from my business standpoint, there are a few more factors I need to consider. But, hey Axle, all that means is I'll have to check out your other shows. See ya at the Suede Palace?

    WTF!

Thanks for the clarification but i find your perception that "awesome cars that use to show up every year are dropping out progressively" to be completely false. Just then 14 cars from Colorado alone - were amazing, our line up, and everything i posted on my personal thread were awesome machines. I think the past two years have shown an increase in quality, but each to his own. I'll drop this for now. Take care, Axle
