My Brother, John, built a couple of new RE style Modifieds, we're finishing up the tin work now. They should be showing up at some Northeast races soon.

  5. I bought all three , but was raised on SCR and was partial to OW. The slide there really began when Penthouse bought them out and then the next buyout came. Still I liked all three of them separate.

  6. Well, if he's a friend of yours then he ai......................:D

  7. Great photo of CJ's Coupe George and yes, SCR mag was the best. I used to read it cover to cover all the time. Even read it before the Rod mags. You just knew it was REAL. Circle Track was all gloss no life to the mag at all.

Inside row: Ron Martin (4), Jim Rudolph (72), Bud Schilling (36), Bill Torrisi (65). Outside row: Norm Schmidlin (24), Ed Ortiz (12), Ed Anchor (55), Gordie Treichler (47), Mike Loescher (white coach). Not sure who is in the coupe headed for the fence (looks like Andy Haley -- wish this were in color)...

Jean-Guy Chartrand at Lancaster (NY) Speedway, 1972. Gordon Reinig photo. This pic was used for the early-'73 logo/bumper sticker (which simply proclaimed, "BE THERE!" off to the right of Chartrand's car). When the Modified rules changed to "Series 70." I don't think they had Photoshop back then, but little fenders and headlights were superimposed on the car to make it look like it had a full body. It was ironic that the free Opening Day '73 bumper stickers showed Chartrand's "old" car while the masthead on the program from the same day showed the "modified" Chartrand pic...

I don't know where you get all this great stuff, Bullfather, but I love it! Same for the other contributors, Dr. John and all the rest. Thanks again. I see many, many cars I would like to build models of. Maybe I would have time to build a fraction of those if I were 10 years old! Gotta pick and choose.

Gleaned from the pages of Lancaster (NY) Speedway's 1973 (April) opening-day program:

Bob Santos, winner of the 200-lap Modified portion of the 1972 season-ending National 400 at Lancaster. Gordie Reinig always told me, "Never tell 'em what they can't have! If we're out of what they want, try to sell them something else." There were quite a few pics of coupes and coaches in this '73 program -- and Lancaster had just implemented the unpopular ("anti-jalopy") Series 70 Modified rule. So this pic, along with the others...while it was nostalgic, it also screamed: "Yeah, here's another thing you can't have anymore...coupes an' coaches!" (For the record, the rule was gone by August and the coupes were "welcomed" back.)

Merv Treichler left Gil Bruss' rides at the end of '72 and went to drive for Jim Mangan. Here's Merv, over the winter, building his new Gremlin for '73.

Gary Iulg, now there was an under-rated driver.

The pic on page 137 of the #3 car says Dundon under it. That was a Fairmont Speedway car driven by Vince Quennville--the Flying Frenchman. Gale Dundon was the owner who is pictured. Vince was killed in a trailer truck accident. His son still races mods here in Vt., and else where. Neal

  29. Nope, you're wrong his right leg wasn't sore, but I bet his left leg was :p;).

Take a closer look at the picture. It's been reverse imaged.

First tip-off for me was the gear shift on the right side of the transmission.

Second was the $. That's the throttle pedal!! In the pic it's on the left with the linkage going through the firewall on the right. It's backwards.

Third is the gauges. I zoomed in on them. They are all reading backwards.

This goes to prove that I do pay close attention to what ya' post here :D .

AND ............ yes, I don't think that head restraint will pass tech today.

That pic is taken at Lebanon Valley Speedway. I think the driver was Johnny Flach. That was a 5-window coupe converted to a 3-window, and they did a nice job doing it.

In the early 60's I seem to remember a supercharged flathead in that car. It ran real good.
