The only person who has 20Gs for that tank also owns a P38. Paying 20Gs just to cut it up for a car you only get to run a few times a year? Not worth it. You could beat out your own for a fraction of that. I could build my VW tanker for half of that.
I bet there are some military buffs or museum who would kill for that. IMHO, I'd hate to see it on the road and cut up. I'd use it for a pattern to make one. I feel like it should be preserved.
I'll bet that isn't the only one out there. Heres one for you. A guy I know's son spotted one standing on end up aginst a barn while making a propane delivery. He was sure it was a P38 tank . When him and his dad went back to ck on it, not only was it a P38 tank, but it was an old belly tanker with no rear end standing vertical against the barn on it's front axle. It had been there when the people bought the place . The lady GAVE it to them.
Yes, they are still out there, but they are harder to find than any ford part ever made. I'm glad to see another one surface. Thanks again Chris, for finding me one. Rockey, That other tank is a good size and very close to the p-38, I have one just like it, although mine has no fin. The fin would be great to leave on a Lakester if you had a big horsepower motor, I'd say 400hp or more, it would be helpful.
Let me clear up some confusion. I never said it was going at 19.5K, I said one sold for that at the Big-3 in San Diego, which is true. I don't think, especially in this economy, it is going to go that high. I got 10,000 PMs within about 10 minutes of the post and found it impossible to figure out a price for it. They surface rarely enough that it is difficult to find an accurate price for it. Rather than jumping through hoops, I figured we would just put it up on Ebay. This was never meant to be spam or a classified post, it was meant to be something neat because it is so rare to find a barn find in a big city. Thanks, -drZ
I agree fully. While hot rodding history is cool, WWII historical stuff like this takes priority IMO. If the tank has a chance of reuniting with a P-38, that's where it should go. If it had been cut up, I'd see it differently...but it's still an aircraft part right now, and maybe oughta stay that way.
Do you remember a couple years ago the p-38 tank on ebay that had a ton of signatures on it? I think it was mechanics and pilots/crew etc, it was plastered with signatures. Any ideas on what happened to that one? TP
Nice tank......your lucky to have two as well....most original tanks were built from two tanks, they would use the bottoms off of each tank so they didn't have to deal with the flat part that was used for mounting, but then again thats when they could get tanks for next to nothing in the bone yard, Good luck with it.
