Every year it gets better. Every year it rains Friday and the rest of the weekend is gorgeous. Seeing friends you haven't seen in a while...or at least since the last car show. Making new ones. Seeing the best cars in the country. It all adds up to the best car show around, the Lone Star Roundup.

Austin Speed shop open house was great, Jade Idol and the Rev. rocked the place. I can't wait for the 7th live show when Bob has the CD out :D

I'm ashamed to say we had never gone on the Ski Shores cruise before. It was one of the best parts of the weekend, if you haven't gone before you must next time! Here's some pictures.

A little wet on the way down....but not bad. And a big congratulations to Will for getting his '39 Chevy on the road!

Super pics Fidge. It was great seeing you again and the top on the modified looks great. Very clever how you attached it.

    Wow...what a weekend!

After a very wet start, and a GREAT breakfast at the Magnolia Café, Cliffy, Louverdude and I hit the show just after noon on Friday. We were VERY glad to stretch our legs after 1300 miles in a VW Golf...but the 44 mpg @ 80 mph helped ease the pain.

The whole show moved inside to avoid a washout but the resulting "mini-show" inside the expo building and barn was fabulous. The cars were great... a few bitches about non-traditional cars being allowed in but, overall, the quality of the rides was outstanding. I've been noticing more and more unrestored/untouched hot rods showing up... true survivors from an earlier time make great reference cars for new builds.

Fridays entertainment was great... I loved the funky band that played in the early afternoon (T-Birds?) and Jimmie Vaughn was a great surprise.

Saturday's live shows included Dale Watson who sings great "road songs". His distinctive baritone country voice makes many of today's artists sound like Pee Wee Herman in comparison. He travels in an old Silver Eagle and, when I asked about the "Freddie" device that he installed to keep the engine temp down on long pulls and desert driving, he invited me into his bus for a look see on how it works.

The "Freddie", named after it's inventor (a tour bus driver), it's a device that takes water from the busses fresh water tank and sprays it on the radiator cooling down the engine. It operates on a timer from inside the drivers dash... pretty cool!

Another surprise was having legendary guitarist James Burton play a great set with the LeRoy Brothers band. Burton was Ricky Nelsons guitarist before he went to work for Elvis Presley. His legendary licks on songs like Hello Mary Lou and Traveling Man will forever make him one of my all-time favorite guitarists. He worked the King for every one of his Las Vegas shows thru the years and is now a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

While the lead guitarist of the LeRoy Brothers held up a "cheat sheet" while stumbling thru the words of "Hello Mary Lou", Canadian country music singer Tracy Houston, her friend Barry, another unidentified hot rodder and I stood in the audience and pretended to also be reading the words while serving as impromptu back-up singers for the song. That got a big grin from Burton as he acknowledged us with a knowing knod...

Later I got an autographed photo of Burton with Ricky Nelson. James even signed my left bi-cep... an instant tattoo of sorts from one of the world's greatest guitar talents... WOW! Now all I need is the balls to get it inked in before it disappears!

Later we headed over to the Austin Speed Shop spectacular. Got a glimpse of Jesse and his bride (I have to admit she's as hot in person as she is on film). We had VIP passes that would have allowed us to visit with Jesse in the shop's showroom but two us us DA's lost them so we enjoyed the party, and Reverend Horton Heat, along with the rest of the vast unwashed hot rodders.

After a great ASS party, I dragged Cliffy and Steve down to the Broken Spoke to watch the Derailers and to sample a typical Texas two-step Saturday night. The girls were pretty and always gave us a little smile as they danced on by our table. It's amazing how Texas women can be so pretty AND friendly at the same time. I stumbled thru one dance and we all went home happy.

If you have never sampled Texas hospitality you need to come to Austin for the Round-Up. Great cars, FABULOUS food, friendly people and a vibe not found anywhere else on this planet. The old Texas traditions like "sir" and "mam" are alive and well in Austin. Even the illegal aliens are friendly!

Thanks to the Kontinentals, and Austin, for another great Round-Up!

Thanks for the pics Eric! I never would have gotten the coupe done in time without your help getting the parts to me quickly! Thank you!
I've got to hang around next year and go to Ski Shores - looks like a lot of fun!

I'm not sure which is more surprising: That you built that nice little modified so quickly, or that you somehow talked that cute girl into coming to the Roundup with you. Both of mystifying!:D
