Thanks for bringing this one back to the top. The pictures of "Romango" really stir memories for me. It was the one car that put the love of customs in my heart. I went to every show that car was in and I was like that Tony Stewart commercial, standing and staring for hours at that car. Hats off to McAuliffe (spelling?) for bringing that one back. It isn't the same without the blue glass. I literally pictured myself driving in that car, looking out the blue glass. If I could afford to own one car for the rest of my life, that would be the car. I like reading stuff from Harm's way and two chops, because that was my era in Detroit, Dearborn, Allen Park and Taylor until I moved to Florida when I was 19. Thanks again

We didn't need no steenking law, we had Jimmy Jones who was the only maker of true bubble skirts in the day, The Caddy belonged to Rev Larry Ernst and he lived just over the line in Ohio, he was in Michigan a lot for his customizing stuff. One of my cool memories was watching Jimmy Jones make a set of bubbles for my 1956 Chevy 210 hardtop.
I remember seeing cars in the junkyard with two big long identical holes in the roof,..... A sure sign that Jimmy had been there,......

Sometimes you can find some really nice old custom car and Hot Rod photos on ebay, and other auction sites. But most of the time, bidding on them is a waist of time. There are always some high dollar guys that bid huge amounts for them at the end. And then... most likely they will disappear into private collections to never been seen again. A few weeks ago I came across this great photo of this 1936 Ford with full fade away fenders and a channeled body. Most likely this is a Jimmy Summers car... I bid on it... but eventually it went to a new owner - not me - for over $100.- For a snap shot with the top left corner missing. To much for my budget. But fortunately I did get the auction photo which was pretty good. Or this one with the Pierson Bros coupe... Harry Westergard 36 Ford... late 40's 1940 Ford... But so every now and then I manage to buy some of them. Perhaps they are listed wrong so that the high dollar guys had not found them, or perhaps they where out of town that day... who knows. But in rare cases like that I scan them as soon as I get them and share them on my site. Where they can be enjoyed by everybody. Mild 36 Ford roadster... Buick Sports Custom... Another Sports Custom this time a sectioned 1950 Ford, and on the left side is the Barris Larry Ernst Chevy in its first version. Twochops thanks for putting this thread back up. I have a couple pics of the Grecian or a clone of it for around 89-90 wearing the green and yellow paint. I'll try and dig them up. These photos where used in the May 1957 of Motor Life... or so it was written on the back. I dont have the magazine in my collection (yet) so I cant really show how they looked in the magazine... but if somebody else has this issue... please add the scan of it to this post.... Apparently these where photos taken by George Barris... Barris Olds in front of the Pan Pacific building. really neat are the crop marks in red...
Same 1955 Olds by Barris for Don Coulter. Color photo from the GT350 Lady collection... The rear, next to it we can see the Sam Barris 1952 Ford Convertible in two tone blue. And the Louis Bettancourt Mercury in Tangia Maroon. The white (and purple) Shoebox next to that is from Tad Hirai's by Valley Customs. twochops. Your post indicates you have photos from the Rev. Lary Ernst. I have the clone of his 51 Chev, 2nd version. Do you have pix of this that haven't seen the light of day? Keith

From the he David Errol Zivot Photo Collection Ayala House of Chrome truck Barris 1941 Ford Ayala 1942 Ford Coupe Ayala 1940 Mercury at the dry lakes before it was finished as a full custom... 1938 Buick for Richard Meade. Jimmy Summers and Coachcraft worked on this car.
