Thoughts on Cable Driven Lokar Shifter?????

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by holliwood, Apr 21, 2009.

  1. I'm trying to find a shifter for my 700r4. Anybody have any info on the Lokar cable driven ones that can be mounted anywhere? Pros/Cons? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Shawn :)

I have a Ford 4R70W overdrive trans in my 36 Ford Coupe, which is a pretty big unit.

I originally purchased a Lokar trans mount shifter for sheet metal mock-up, but when I installed the "real" engine and transmission in the car, things looked really tight around the trans.

I spoke with the techs at Lokar about switching to a floor mounted cable shifter and was told that these shifters were pretty much designed for trucks and that the shifter needed to be mount toward the front of the transmission in order to have the bend in the cable at the correct place to make shifting possible.

Mounting the shifter that far forward was not an option for me.

With a bit of sheet metal cutting and rod bending, the trans mounted shifter works fine.

    Good Luck

ok i can give you some facts,no opinions. i put my FIRST lokar shifter in last august. first automatic i've ever run in over 35 years rodding. first, it works like a charm shifts good, looks good.since i have done the 1st one the next one will be a WHOLE LOT easier, of course. yes i have to admitt,i used the instruction sheet,or tried to. it was not very informative at all. if i had been joe average:rolleyes: , (not bragging here, but i've been working on old cars for a while) it would really have been a bitch to install. but besides that i have zero O complaints. so far:D. hope this helps with what you needed. if not ask away. bruce bruce

B.A.KING-was that a cable shifter that you installed? I was ready to install a standard Lokar with a top mount into a '47 Merc with an AOD trans. Would need to modify tunnel and notch frame to do the job, on hold for now. Have a cable B&M shifter now and do not like having to mess with the pull up lever. Anyone know of a true Hot Rod type cable shifter? Most cables are way too long. holliwood-how about a column shifter?

yes it was. the only thing that limits you is the shift arm that is below the floor. i'm a pretty big guy,and wih this type shifter i could move it over a little to the right to get a little extra room

  9. I'm running a B&M cable shifter. They are nearly identical. I mounted the shifter and pivoting arm ABOVE the floor so there was no clearance issues at all under the car. Just a cable running to the tranny. Everything up top is covered by the console.

ran one on my turbo 350 on my riviera and the cable length can be limiting. Only problem i had, really, and thats just a case by case problem.

  12. Joker, I am thinking about using a 60s Chevy column with the shifter, so I don't have to worry about it. I got a buddy that has one he's not using. He just has to find time to bring it by so I can look at it. I really like the Speedway ones though (very simple and clean). Once, I look at his column, I'll decide which way I'm gonna go. Thanks for the advice fellas.

How "limiting" was it? Do you still have that setup? What problems are you having?

I've ordered the cable shifter for my '63 Rivi, I'm swapping a ST400 into it. I don't want to exchange it for the linkage operated setup (and pay the shipping and restocking fee) unless the cable option just won't work.

Would like to switch to a Lokar cable shifter, trans mounted 23" Lokar I have works ok but transmits too much vibration, not a quality feel. How far does the cable shifter lever protrude under the floor? Can't tell from the pictures on the Lokar web site.

I just tried to install mine, but the shifter locatioin vs the 180 bend required in the cable to get it up to the tranny made it impossible to install as I planned. I was expecting the cable to be adjustable, but it isn't. So............ my cable and the associated brackets are for sale ifn anyone wants to use it. Will work with any Lokar rig. I will have to use a regular rod now. PM me for details ifn you are interested. Gary
