Desoto 291 Hemi cam regrind

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Desoto291Hemi, Apr 23, 2009.

  1. I was wondering what is the most that could be gotten from a stock cam by having it reground? Approximate lift?
    Thanks.

  2. Does anyone have any idea about this?
Maybe a good company to call and ask questions?

Engle. They have been doing re-grinds for a very long time. Call and talk to them.
    Good Luck.

Try a PM to PETE1 (Been in the cam business 55 years). He helped me out before on a similar question recently. He was very helpful.

Chrs Nielson does all hemi stuff... Chet Herbert did till he passed last week. Donnie Johanson still works at Chet's... I hope they keep the doors open. Try George at Clay Smith... he did my hemi cam.

I had one done at Iskenderian a few months ago for a friends '55 291. I was surprised at how wide the lobe seperation was on the stock cam (something like 124 degrees)...and it could only be closed up to about 114 degrees during the regrind if I remember correctly, and the lift is somewhere around .460 now. Any more and the lobe seperation will be even wider, which is fine for forced induction...not so great for naturally aspirated.

At any rate, Iskenderian did a fine job and I wouldn't hesitate to use them again. Heck, I use Isky cams in pretty much everything I build.

George @ Clay Smith told me the same thing. Originally ground on 120 centers, mine was closed up to 114 and around 450-460"lift. Can't get much more out of them then that...

  8. Thanks guys,,I really appreciate the help.
I was hoping for about .480 to .500 lift,,but it is hard to find any parts for a Desoto,,,I will probably have to regrind the stock cam,,or pay a fortune for a roller and roller lifters!

    Thanks!
