Salt Flat style Headers lets see 'em

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Choppa Hanee, Apr 5, 2009.

  1. Well i made mine myself, had a local guy roll up the cones for the headers, bought the head plates of trademe (NZ version of ebay), bought some U bends and a foot of 2" pipe from the local exhaust shop and a few days later had these.

Probably not the best flowing headers/Exhaust in the world but they sound OK, until the smoke alarm went off! (Link below)

[IMG]for all you guys that have lake headers you may consider putting turn outs on the ends of them. they keep the exaust off the doors, which save a lot of cleaning and saves the paint, primer or rust..........just a Idea !

Its kind of a joke, they aren't Salt Flat style, but they are powering a Salt Flat Car in '09...... :D

DFV? It is AJ Foyt's quadcam Ford that he won the '67 Indy with.

Nothing like winning Indy, and setting a Bonneville record on the same engine 40+ years apart right????

I really like how you went under the tranny crossmember with the oval'ed tube. Very trick.

I heard they give you about 130 extra ponies and save you 22 MPG... That is what I was told anyways...LMAO

Unfortunately generally people equite loud exhaust to more horsepower, the responses to your question will be interesting if it is based on the "drivers feel."

I know my car seemed to have more ponies but I think it is in my head! You now wishfull thinking

  9. Thanks for the kind words, its nice to know folk have been looking at the build up pages, not a lot lot of progress lately but its still moving along slowly.

It took a lot of time and thought but its worked out real well. The bottom of the oval is flush with the bottom of the chassis and the flexible "bellows" mean there should be no rattles.

The whole system has come up good, full 3" all the way except for the oval section which should flow well anyway, and acts as a big balance pipe to help quieten it all down.

Everybody calls them something different. They sure look good on the right car, though. Very informative post. Thanks, guys.

  11. This is a generalization, Better than shorties in most cases, no where near as good as long tube 4 into 1, or proper designed Tri Y

  12. Ok here we go...I just finsihed them up this evening. I will coat them with something siver in color and I would like to coat the tips in black. I want to thank everyone for posting pictures and comments. You guys here on the HAMB are a big help and true inspiration to me. Please leave comments good or bad...I can handle it. I think they look cool, my idea was to have something different than everyone else. I bought the speedway kit for a SBC I ordered extra cones and 4 turnouts from JEGS. I think I have around $300 in the whole set.[IMG]

That's going to be interesting to listen to when the engine fires up. Think of the firing order 18436572. They look bad a$$...

  20. Thanks Glen!!! I saw your badass A cruising Main Street last night. Hopefully my truck will be on the road soon and we can cruise together:rolleyes:

I started mine without baffles and it was absolutely deafening. The neighbor kids said it sound like a helicopter landed.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Like a helicopter, just didn't know how to put into words at the time... Good call by the neighbor kid!

    WOW! Those are gorgeous pipes!
I'm trying to picture in my mind how these would look with the front pipe on the top. Curious to know if you tried it that way and it didn't look right or is it six of one or half dozen either way. Anyways, beautiful work. I can't wait to see the Vid with flames shooting out of them! :D

Has anybody ever built a set where the cones were installed right after all the pipes came together into a common collector?

On Roofus I want to use the jag manifolds and then merge the two downpipes into one and then have go into a cone. 6-2-1?
