the thing I love about these trucks is all the different combos that you can use just by changing around the hoods and grilles.

I look forward to seeing the chev hood w/ the gmc grille, as I don't have a pic of that combo yet

here are a bunch of pics of different combos ,using the 60-61 chev hood, and one of a 60-61 gmc.

Whoa, you guys still rolling with this one? It is amazing how some people can get so fired up over a simple, and seemingly benign, hood and grill swap.

Isn't this the place about the love of hotrods, cars, customs, etc. and being creative? It's vehicles from people like Terd that inspire me.

Looks cool to me, can't wait to see the finished truck! There's nothing un-traditional putting that hood on there.

    Lolz.:D

I got all the rust off the nostrils and inserts today (took it down to bare metal) and put them in primer. Bought myself some new turn signal lenses at the Autofair today too. The front end is looking better. I'll post some more photos when I pick up that grill and get it on.

When I had my '66 Suburban I had that same hood on it, and I had planned to use the GMC 4 headlight grille like you have, but chromed and with some Pontiac-y hood stars in place of the lettering.

I loved it with the "football hood", but when I sold the truck the guy who bought it wanted a '66 hood so I swapped it out.

For as much as some people seem to hate them, those 60-61 hoods are actually pretty pricey items if they're in good solid shape.

I like them better too (obviously, lol. :D). This hood is pretty solid. It has some pin holes in the very front center and a couple of small bondo spots on the p***enger side. I'm not sure what's under there yet, but there's no holes through to the inside.

two things I learned on this post

1- I like "yer" (redneck truck guy spelling) truck,I've had a ton of them,my first one was a 60 shortbox GMC,currently I have a 64 shortbox GMC,owned it since my oldest daughter was born. She's 20 now.

2-jusjunk is way cooler than most people, but can he get a hat that fits........

I finally got the grill on. It was not without issues though. Turns out the grill is from a big truck and had different mounts. I had to cut off those and bolt on some 1/2 ton mounts. Then I ran into wiring issues. I traced it down to a bad ground blade on one headlight plug. It's all fixed now and everything works like it's supposed to. I'm still undecided about the bar under the grill that used to have the "GMC" letters. I'll either cut it off or add a chrome bar from a car if I can find one that fits and looks nice. Here's a couple of shots...

Next is taking it down to bare metal to find all the holes, one panel at a time and then primer and patching holes. So far, the hood, cowl, and tailgate is done. Still need to do the doors, cab, bed and grill opening. I'm getting a pair of front fenders with no rust or holes from a fellow hamber. The ones on the truck now both have holes/bondo/issues. After that is some paint and skinny whitewalls. Then interior.

I never liked the early "cat's eye" hood, I think it would look alot better with the original hood and the 4 headlight grill, I've never seen one done that way.

I really dig these trucks. Hated letting mine go, but i replaced it immediately with 2 -54 chevys, so I'll live :D

Seriously though, if you want it to be "traditonal", you should strip the fenders off the front, and off the bed, and call it a "bobber":D I havent seen the "traditional" guru himself DESOTO on this thread yet, so you must not have struck to big of a nerve around here:eek:

I think it looks great Terd. Just done a GMC grill swap on my 66 c10 and I'm debating the exact same thing with the GMC emblem Bar. I 'd like to put some bullets or teeth on there but did think about a simple floating chrome bar. Grill was a bit bent but it's a chrome one so looks great on my truck which is fairly bent anyway!

Keep at it man, if Hot Rodders and Kustom builders in the forties and fifties had given a rats *** about rules we wouldn't have the culture and heritage we love.......

You can get a pretty good idea from looking at any '63-'66 GMC truck. The hoods are very similar.

I had some chrome drawer pulls laying around and tried a couple in the bar. It didn't look that great. These were just small (about 1 1/2"), round drawer pulls though. Bullets might look better. If you do the bullets, I'd like to see some pics. I've seen a truck or two with the vette bar and teeth. They looked ok, but just not my cup of tea.

Maybe the floating chrome "chevrolet" letters from a '61 chevy truck grill would look decent.

I really like the grill -I like the open space where the GMC was -I say cut that bar off -or paint it black so it disappears.

another idea that comes to mind when I see those trucks (especially yours) is the front bumper -I'd like to see it flipped upside down -unbolt the brackets from the frame and flip it. that way the peak on the face of the bumper it toward the top and it kinda rolls under...

I'd like to find a '63+ GMC hood. They are very similar to the chevy hoods, but have just enough "flair" to be different.

Personally never cared for the ol' eyebrow hood.....'course, mine is a '65 GMC with the chrome grille already. I think the center area of the newer hood calls for some striping in the point....but that's just me. I do agree with the change away from the red wheels, but overall, it's your ride, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I've seen thousands of those early 60's trucks and owned several and the first thing I did with one was throw that **** ***ed ugly hood away and put a later model hood on it.

What Turd did was take a great looking truck an make a turd out of it..
Like a lot of others I can't see why a guy would take a great looking truck and turn it into a junk yard refugee just because he has a throw away hood laying around.

I might give the bumper idea a shot and see what it looks like. Thanks.
