One for the early Hydro gurus, Cad/Olds swap

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by warbird, May 2, 2009.

  1. I'm finally getting the time to scope out a few things on the Hydro swap I've got planned. Intent is to swap the single-range, crash-reverse Cad Hydro I've presently got running behind the Cad '331 out for a later, dual-range, Olds unit. I've got the driveshaft, trans mount issues all sorted out and am down to the front end of the tranny.

Question 1: Any problems running the Olds flywheel/torus assembly behind the Cad motor? I know the crank flange is the same, but what will the Olds assembly do to the balance?

Question 2: Any modern sealers that will work well on the crank flange (a known leak point) and the gaskets?

Question 3: Transmission fluid. I've always run Dexron fluid in my Hydros, but have been hearing that some folks are having better luck with Type FA fluid. Supposedly it's closer to the composition of they old time Hydro fluids... Any input?

And, yes I'm fairly knowledgeable about the early Hydro's as I've been into a few of them over the years. Just trying to get some other opinions before I dive into this.

    TIA

  3. I would use the Cadillac flywheel, torus and members, and Cadillac bellhousing. It should bolt up to the dual range.

I'm planning on running the Cad bellhousing for several reasons. And I agree that the flywheel, torus and etc. will bolt up. It's just that the Olds set-up is an original, matched set while the unit I've got behind the Cad at present is a hodge-podge of parts of unknown origin. I had to replace the torus housing during the rebuild years ago and Fatsco sent me a rebuilt unit that had to have the guide pin holes drilled out to make work with the Cad flywheel. I'd rather run a matched set, hence the questions about balance issues.

They say to use Pliobond 30...

I'm also looking at some 2-part aircraft sealers and some of the anaerobics.

    I use Dexron 3 or 4.

Me too, just hearing some reports saying that FA tends to seep through the seals and gaskets less.

    Thanks for the input!

    I'll pm Yorgatron.

  4. Just Google Pilobond 30, lots of suppliers. Cant get GM type A anymore all the folks I talk to have said use the old Ford Type F. Been using it in my Dual Range for years, seems to work fine. Have been told that the late Dextrons are to slick for the bands, are designed for discs. Keep us posted. Good luck, Dave
PS: When I was in the Army back in the early as a mech, they used straight weight SAE 30 engin e oil in the dual range hydros in M211 2 1/2 tons and in the M59 personal carriers. They all had 302 GMCs

shouldn't be a problem as far as balance, but is the ring gear going to be the right size?

I use Permatex anaerobic, but I wnt to try the pliobond on my next installation.

type F hooks up a little better, but dexron works fine too.
they originally used whale oil, maybe ask somebody in Japan?

  6. Thanks guys! That's the type of input I was hoping for.
