On a more serious note. We were in the staging lanes at Indy for the first qualifying run in top fuel, I've always been the kind of guy to give every thing a good look over before I send some one down the track. I get around to the back of the car and during my inspection of the bolts and mounts of the wing I see the bolts had been put in and the nuts only spun on a couple turns. I go get the bosses kid that I knew did this and proceeded to rip him a new asshole that is probably still bleeding. I dont think he ever talked to me again and I didn't give a shit. Either you have it or you don't when it comes to putting something together rite........ JC

There was a letter to the editor in OSR when that car was built. They were really proud of the car, and said that people stood around it all day long. I'm sure they did, everyone rubbernecks at the accidents on the freeway too...

Gee, I’m beleaguered with culpability. Thanks for the ("god damned fucking") insight. What a concept, turning them the other way to loosen. Yep, 1/2" setscrew would be an improvement. Your analysis of the DD Shaft being too small for the pipe IS the weak link, I missed that. Don't know what I was thinking.:D

Looks like an improvised U-joint, doesn't it? I think maybe the DD goes all the way? Maybe meat for a new patent? .............Maybe call it a wobble-joint, an improvement over some of the three u-joints in a row setups I've seen.:D

    Now those are scary!

  5. the scariest thing is when i looked at a rod and saw my face reflecting in the shiny paint! :)

  6. I'd be ashamed to admit I rode in this, and even MORE ashamed to admit I built it. Thanks, Mike

You guys want to see scary stuff and hear even scarier stories? Visit your local circle track sometime and listen to the bench racing. A guy I work with once told me that he only tack-welded the rollcage to the floor pan of his street stock, then ran a bead of RTV around the rest of the way ( so it "looked" like solid weld), then covered it with rattle can black. His reason? The car would undoubtedly get totalled during the season, and it was too much trouble to cut welds all the way around! Think about this for a second: he compromised the safety equipment BECAUSE HE KNEW THE CAR WOULD BE IN A WRECK!!! I can't even begin to understand the logic there.

I saw a craftsmen wrench used as pitman arm, i know it`s hardened tool steel, but still scary. I saw another car with no foot brakes, but another craftsmen wrench used like a pullup e-brake.

I had gone to a Rod Run up in Bremerton Washington. It was held out at the old drag strip. We were the first to arrive and were told to camp any where on the grass next to the strip. They hadn't rolled out the timing tower yet and ended up setting up my tent trailer right on the starting line. Later in the day the drags had started and this guy pulls up to the starting line in an open altered. He was just about to do his run when I noticed his king pin on one side sticking up 3-4 inches. I grabbed an official and they red flagged him. He jumped out, kicks the pin back in place and made his run. Still scares the hell out of me thinking about all the people there along the track with no guard rails or any thing.

  12. Can't find my photo of this but I saw this full size chevy pickup with some folks working on it. The tires were off and they had old aluminum wheels...just the wheels... being used as jack stands. Yep turned lengthwise so it could roll too. Yep, on a sloping road. No, no chocks or anything.

Gotta say the scariest thing was a female asian driver drinking coffee, doing her lipstick, and talking on speaker phone at a stoplight before entering the 5 fwy north. Turned out to be my regional manager when I saw her pull into the same parking lot as me.

The front end is a true example of "Independent Suspension".
    It's "independent" from the chassis!!

when i bought my f100 a few years ago, we discovered it had a custom tranny mount. which consisted of a 2x4 with bent nails used to "secure" it to the tailshaft and the crossmember.

Look a little closer,Copper or brass tubing for drag link!Galvanized pipe with cast pipe reducers,And welded roller chain make up the hairpin and a connecting rod that doubles as the hair pin/Steering box mount! With NO radiator hoses at least he isn't driving it on the street yet?Wonder how it stayed together long enough to load/unload from the trailer?

If I can find the picture at home I'll post it, We where at the Red Neck Rumble last year and saw a "car" and I use that term loosly with a U bolt ( like used on a leaf spring rear end) welded to the drivers side backing plate and it was being used as the steering arm. The welds looked like someone had blown their nose on it , and he drove it there. Oh I almost forgot the wire hanging out of the left front tire was snagging pants legs as people looked at the scarey steering arm.

when I got "pinkie" home I hadn't noticed that the gas line ran under the rear axle through a rubber hose.. when I jacked up the car to take the rims off it ripped the hose from the tank and gas gushed forth...
..but it was a location easy to access, maybe that was part of the "plan"?

There's so much scary shit in this picture that it makes me wonder if this car isn't just a caricature of a car, you know he just did stuff for the shock value. Looking at the copper plumbing serving time as a drag link is one thing, but llok at the chain he's using as the upper part of his "hairpin". With all this cheesy engineering, the wall thickness on the headers looks pretty thick for some reason. Perhaps he should have just made the car out of exhaust tubing...

When I was still teaching highschool autoshop we had a student come flying around the back road to the shop with his 74 Cougar on fire. What had been a pristine car that was show worthy at the time burned to the ground because his father had spliced a 1/4 inch pipe nipple in the middle of the powersteering pressure hose and used bailing wire as hose clamps. That was at about 6pm the night before because the guy was too cheap to take the kid to buy a new hose. His "fix" lasted a total of ten miles and cost the kid what was probably the nicest car at the school at that time.

I was retorquing my cylinder head on my 48 at the Michigan Hotrod Association tent at the 73 Tulsa nationals (had to borrow the torque wrench) and listening to some of their stories on cars that they had to go out and rescue at the run including one with conduit radius rods with the ends hammered flat and 3/8 bolts holding them on the car.

I did notice that the thing with the quarter eliptics and no radius rods does have tow bar or hold down tabs on the front axle so It may not actually get driven on the streeet.

Even more scarry is certain individuals posting on here defending some of this pos stuff time and again. That really scares me.

  26. AMEN to that!!!!!!!

The rat rod in the previous three pictures is a prime example why there are so many people condeming these cars. That thing should never have been allowed to be licensed.

In high school my buddy had a 32 Ford pickup with a brand new 1962 340/327 in it a 4 speed and an Olds rear and it hauled ass. He stripped out the threads on the 32 steering shaft that held the steering wheel on so we drove it around with vise grips to steer it for 3 weeks until we found a new column. Didnt see anything wrong with it then, now I think we were out of our minds !
