    Jesse:

GREAT work and really respect your attitude and work with the community.

Noticed that you are blocking the car in the same place you are painting. What's your trick to keep the dust down when you paint? I see the water on the floor after the paint. What else? I have similar circumstances in my shop (WWII vintage quonsot) and am imspired by the quality of your final product. Hoping to replicate your efforts...to at least a small degree.

  7. tom, thanks for the props..as for the dust..after all the blocking is done and car is ready ..car and everything in the room is taken out, then swept, watered down and swept some more, but no mater how clean you get it, even in most of them high dollar spray booths you will get some dust particles in your paint, that's when the next stage comes into place, right now we are wet sending her for 3 more coats of clear, then we will resand to get the particles out or flat , then we will buff her, then polish her, and last hand polish to a mirror finish,

Which once again proves that there is no substitute for hard and often redundant work. Your method is pretty consistent with that done in the fifties. A lot of guys shot lacquer right in the driveway or parking lot. I used to do that when I was running a bootleg body shop out of my dad's garage when I was in high school. That was in North LA (Newhall  )

You guys definitely run a "traditional" operation. If you read the little books from the era, you will see that Barris, Ayala, even Doane Spencer built amazing product in circumstances nearly identical to yours. You guys prove that you don't need a "Foose Surgery Room" to produce good work.

One bit of friendly advice. Some of the old school methods of the fifties weren't that good. The vaporized solvents from the over spray in the paint area are pretty flammable. I noticed you have some extension cord plugs and open wiring connections for your lights in the background of your pics. Plugs often spark if they are loose and you move the cord. Same thing is true if your wire nuts aren't really tight. Paint rooms usually have anything that can spark isolated in some fashion. Use your common sense to reduce the potential for sparking and you and your guys will be a lot safer. I really suggest at least hardwiring the plug in stuff and checking the wire nuts for tight periodically. Hate to see you have a fire and have LAFD's finest shut your operation down.

Yeah, its pretty dangerous. But so is strapping and hanging on the corner in South LA. I prefer your brand of dangerous any day! Keep up the good work...on your cars and with your community.

  11. tom, thanks for the props, but most of all thanks for the advice, i have been looking into rewiring that whole room, actually looking to get an actual spray booth, but untill then i will have to rewire what we have and make it work..any body got a spray booth they wanna donate to a good cause...lol..

I have been researching the spray booth idea for awhile. My plans were to build my own with studs and drywall. Once you know the basic concepts, do the flow calculations, and have the right parts, it can be done. However, with a lot of shops closing their doors these days, I am seeing the real deal pop up for some stupid money. I would be checking Craigslist and the Recycler and see what might be out there. I have seen decent complete booths list from $2500 down to free. The free one was one of those left to the landlord by the last tenant so "gotta make it go away right now". I missed that one, unfortunately. I am waiting to see what else pops up before going back to the original plan.

My biggest concern for you is fire department annual inspection. You look like you are in an industrial area. Businesses open to the public are subject to the plain view doctrine. This basically means that the FD can witness your wiring work and issue you a citation without having a warrant to enter your premises. Problem with that is it usually leads to a whole lot of other trouble...like what other "fire hazards" do you have...do you have welding and hot work permits...any thing built without permits...anything accidentally poured down the drain...???

Best to fly below the radar when these guys show up...assuming that they do in your part of town. They nailed a restaurant I used to manage near Santa Monica in the late 80's...so know the drill...and it was hell for a few weeks. If you are new to the area, ask your neighbors if and when the FD stops by to share a PBR and check your operations! Get that wiring cleaned up by somebody that knows what they are doing and it won't be out there screaming at those fire guys when they show up.

  20. yea i look on craigslist from time to time...as for inspections, YES we get randome inspections all the time, i don't paint very much, maybe one car every 2/3 months, so the cords are not always up just during the painting, and yes we have all of our permits up to date, and we actually built 2 cars for the city inspector thats in charge of my area. really cool guy, this is his 48 with a 57 302 gmc

  21. its funny how some customers think..they have no idea on how much work is involved or think that they Know how its done.....i had one customer who wanted us to chop his very nicely painted car, shave it and a few other body mods..and asked me NOT TO DAMAGE HIS PAINT... to please cover it up with blankets... come on guys ..at least do a research on what is involved on doing this type of work... ooohhh..then they want to give you a time limit on your work....DAAAMM THIS IS AN ART..NOT SOME EARL OR ONE DAY PAINT SHOP...SORRY GUYS JUST ONE OF THEM DAYZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  25. yea carry a gun..make it easier for the homies to do you...
all they need is to take that gun that you dont know how to even hold and do you with it...
look if you come to the HOOD looking for trouble you will find it..if you come to the hood looking for LORDZ SHOP they will tell you exactly were im at...i have been in almost every city small and big in all of southern cali..and every were i go i guarantee you they have some knuckle heads ready to trow down..you give them respect and they respect you..you come by somebodys HOOD and try to look down at them like if you are better then them..like if your shit dont stink then your asking for trouble..and here you will find it..very quickly...
not saying that all these fools deserve respect, but respect their hood...this is all they have..most of these kids have never been out of their Hoods..never been out camping..never been out in the desert .never been out in the forest, never seen snow,
never been on a horse, never been out fishing, the hood is all they know..so instead of talking..do something about it, befriend one of these kids..(young homiies) and show him that their is more then just the hood..believe me you will make a friend for life..
