I am building a 49 chevy rat rod and I am building from the ground up other than the suspension, I snagged it out of a lincoln that i had when i was in highschool. The suspension is bagged and all independant with discs all the way around. I am starting at the frame and I was wondering if 4X4X3/16 tubing would be sufficient for my prodject if i put 600 horsepower in it. I still drive like a dumb kid too and i am sure I will have my rod out in the woods and over all sorts of bumps. just looking for some advice. thanks for the help, Rick
Welcome from WI Just beware that the term rat rod is unacceptable here as it means an unsafe uncool nontraditional car. It sounds like you are building a hot rod 49 Chevy. It may seem like just words but words have meaning. Show us some progress pics I know I would love to see them.
I don't really have anything to take a pic of yet but I am planning to have the frame atleast partially together in a couple weeks. I hope I understand the meaning of ratrod, and I think I am within the lines. The only thing i am doing against the grain is the suspension but that is what I had layin around and is more for function than looks because if I had a choice i would put in the straight front axle. I am worried i would push it off a corner. I don't think ratrods have to be unsafe either and I think ratrods are some of the coolest cars and trucks out there as for nontraditional I am putting a chevy cab on a ford suspension with a ford small block and a big rig intake system so nontraditional is all I could call it. but anyway I appreciate the interest and when I am done with it we'll see which category it fits in. and if I am wrong about the hotrod ratrod thing let me know.
I have a bit of a question has anyone ever cut and hinged the middle of a straight front axle to give the performance of IFS. I know that the travel of the axle would cause the tire to lean and make the footprint of the tire smaller. I was thinking car rims and wide curved motorcycle tires to keep the footprint constant. I have built dune buggys with that type of axle but I am not sure if the tire would grab enough asphalt for the weight of a cornering ratrod. Anyway, let me know how stupid this idea is!
How do I post pictures the button on the post simply asks me for a URL so how do I post A picture if it is in a file on my pc
if you know how to email one.... send it here and ill load them up here for ya!!! treed53@centurytel.net
I appreciate the offer but I can't figure that out either so I guess I will be picturless for a while. If anyone knows how how to figure out what the pictures url is let me know.
http://photobucket.com You have to register. After that's done, you can upload pictures from your pc to photobucket. After the upload, your pictures comes up the screen with 4 different ways to show of your pictures! ("IMG code" is then the best option for posting in this forum) Hope you find your way! By the way... Welcome from a Belgian guy! & I also want to see the pictures
so that is what steppin out meant well someone tell steppin out I am sorry I am wondering is it the word or the misconception of the word what do you all call your rods if they are safe cool and unconventional or is this a forum for building the same old rods over and over because I thought this was an R word forum
I really didn't mean that in gest i just wanted to know why the hatred for that word. anyway i don't think I want to make one of those cokie cutter hotrods so I would love to pick your brains on the tech issues but maybe I don't belong here
Welcome. There's a few of us down on the I-44 corridor. Myself, VonDad, mkbench, moparmortuary all live in/near Waynesville. MoJunk's in Rolla. Don't run off cuz the self appointed HAMB police have gotten after you for saying ratrod. Stay, absorb knowledge, apply to your car.
I will definetly be here to absorb knowledge but iwonder is that r word thing a rule seems kinda pety but everbody has thier standards.
