  1. Here is Hubert in Dyno's bubbletop. Not sure where this was taken?

Great pic. I read a recent magazine article about Eddie Schartman, in which he talked about racing this car -- radically lightening it and other steps for match racing, and had good success with it. I'm guessing this was before Platt drove the car, but I really have no idea.

  3. I think Schartman actually drove this car later, after Platt. I know Fast Eddie drove it in '63 when Dyno had his Z-11. I believe Platt drove it in '62. I've heard a story where Dyno was match racing his '64 Comet but had this '62 Chevy in tow. They broke the Comet at the begining of the match race, (I think it was 3 of 5). Dyno called Mercury and asked if he could finish the match with the Chevy and the said NO. If he didn't finish he didn't get paid by the track. Dyno had his helper/mechanic Linton Parker finish the race in the Chevy. The announcer continue to say Don was driving.:D They lost the match but they got paid. This was the only time Linton ever drove a race car in competition. Linton told me this story about 5 years ago.

Hubert drove the '62 Bel Air mostly in late '62 and into '63 before he bought his Z-11. Hubert also drove Dyno Don's '62 Impala into '63. Eddie Schartman ran a '62 of his own out of Jackshaw Chevrolet then as far as I know built himself a '63 Z-11 that he ran most of '63. Dyno used the '62 car as a backup for his '63 Z-11 throughout most of '63 until getting the Comet wagon in late fall of '63. Schartman was driving the Dyno Don '62 into at least late spring of '64 as a match racer and NHRA A/MP car.

    Joel,
When I purchased the Z-11..(1964),It was from Allen Hyder (actual owner of the Shaker)
He died in an accident (fork lift as I recall)
Clay Hyder Trucking was the family business...

BTW/ After Dyno turned the '62 over to Eddie..wow!
He was competitive during a true cross over time.......

Good stuff from the '65 NHRA Winternationals. Thanks for sharing them here. The Mopars were not set up like that for very long. Once the winter meets were over in '65 the two pictured went back and recieved the full AWB treatment. Phil Bonner's Mustang along with all the SOHC Mustangs at that meet had rear axle trouble and the car that got the most axles and won the meet was the TASCA car. Do you have any more of the Stock-S/S-F/X cars from that meet and others?

Joel, these are the only S/S or AFX pics. I do have a couple other shots of Gassers from the same race.

I see from the '65 Winternat's pics, that Color Me Gone was set up as a 2% car. Looks like the 'Missle was still S/S.
Very nice, never seen before pics! Thanks!

Thanks Dennis. I'd say post the gassers over on the Drag Cars In Motion thread here on the HAMB.

That may have been Tom Grove's last race in the MM Plymouth. He went to Ford right after that and Cecil Yother took over the MM cars.
The Missle doesn't look like a 2% setup but the car was running A/FX at that meet. If I'm not mistaken Grove had one of the top ET's in the class that day, but not enough to beat the factory Mustangs.

    Hi all,
I'm under a tight deadline with some artwork ... I need the color of the lettering on the Whuppett car ... I always assumed that it might be red but I want to get it right. Does anyone know and/or have a color photo? My private email is ... racenart@optonline.net
    Thanks.

That's a tough combo to work with. Been there and tried that.

That same combo running D/SA won the NHRA points meet at Memphis two weeks ago. The '62 Plymouth 383/343 was the quickest out of seven D/SA entries. Some of the old combos can be made to run when new technology is applied.

I'm confused here/can't remember regarding AFX. Was the 2% allowable AWB in '64 or 65?
If the 2% restriction was implemented for '65 (and assuming Chrysler knew what the rules were to be) why did they still go so radically overboard with the AWB cars? Was it the ford SOHC they heard was going into the Mustangs that pushed them into it? If not what?
Thanks guys - this is still a really great thread! I'm amazed at what some of you remember.

I can't answer about it being legal, just that it was done for certain. You had to really look at the wheelwell to notice. The "Gene's" '65 Hemi 990 car is a 2%. We ran against it, and beat it like a drum on a weekly basis, back in '68 at Conn dragway.
