If anyone will be heading east after Speed Week, I could use a ride.

    Here's the deal:
Besides building hot rods and writing about them, I'm also a songwriter. Over the last several years, I've written a number of songs about the hot rod life. Most of these were written with a MoKan audience in mind. Ryan and I are trying to work out a suitable performance venue during the HAMB Drags.

Meanwhile, I'm still not working (I'm a chassis fabricator and not a very good one). So over the last year, I've hitched rides to some fun events and written about the adventure - with hopes of compiling these stories into a book, which would also include a soundtrack CD.

How to get to Joplin with no budget: I'll be riding to Speed Week as a crew member on Nexxussian's salt shaking Berkeley (my favorite salt car - I can't resist a racer with a forklift block and Maserati head). Then, if I can scam a ride to the Omaha area, I can link up with my brother (Rocky) for the Joplin leg of the trip. There will be some other hijinks and shenanigans in between, but these are the highlights. Getting to MoKan is my priority - I'll worry about getting home, later (first things first).

    As for getting there:
I'll do what I can to help out with gas money and will gladly donate any needed labor. Maybe we'll stop along the way at your place, where I can perform some wrench waving over your project? Or I can wash dishes at a truck stop, while you dine? Whatever works...
I'll be carrying a guitar case and an aluminum briefcase of personal effects. I don't smoke, drink or do drugs - boring, but at least I won't be cutting into your stash.

I'm posting this, based on the "at least I tried" theory. I know it seems kind of crazy, but hey, I'm chasing a dream here. The ultimate version of this dream would include bringing my hot rod along for a few passes at MoKan, but that seems a bit greedy, at this point.
So I'm throwing this out there for your consideration. What say you?

If you can get from Wendover to Denver I know some HAMBers there will be making the trip to MoKan.

Or if you get a ride along I-70 to Abilene KS, you can ride with me in my coupe. You don't want to ride to Joplin in some hokey-ass 4X4 anyway.....

Ha! Thanks man. Now we're talking! Who's going to Denver?
BTW, that hokey ass '46 Chevy 4X4 will be my limo for a big part of this expedition, so I can't rank it down too much!

Would be strange to see Abilene again - I once lived there, in another life...

ok. sshhhhh.... just between you and me- there is a similarly styled Studebaker pickup here in Salina, we need to set up a race.

Huh. Cool. I bet it hasn't changed much.

Hmmm. Interesting match up. But it couldn't hold a candle to the great Rambler Rumble - could it?

PS: My memory is crispy - I lived in Salina, not Abilene. Sheesh...

All I remember is, the decade was the 1960's. And apparently, I had fun...

Tomcat! I thought you were dead! But this is even better news! Yeah, I'll see you on the salt and this time, you won't even have to help me (for a change)...
    Thanks for the invite!

I can get you to Omaha Scotty, I'll be driving my 52 or maybe the 62 Vette and will be leaving the salt on Wed or Thur. You are welcome to tag along and maybe help with the driving. I'll drop you right at Rocky's, I even know where it is as I have abused his hospitality on occasion.

Wow! Thank you Bob!!! I'll take it! I'll gladly help with the driving and I'll even fix the annoying short in your headlights (check your avatar).
Wow. Another HAMB miracle. Thank you one and all! And I'll see you guys at MoKan!

Stop by the blue suade Stude #4594 (Salt2Salt) when you're in the pits. Don't probably have extra room for a rider, but we're good for a cool drink to a Hamb'r.

Thanks, Turbostude! Even if I'm not thirsty, I love a salty Stude! And turbos are always fun... See you there. Meanwhile, I'll be cheering you on.

  28. Ahem.....Dear Jay...how are you, I am fine.[clenched teeth] I'll have you know my "Hokey ass 4X4" can kick your flathead coupe's ass all over a midwest snowstorm any fucking day....and get a smokin 9 MPG with my stock, smogger 350 doing it! So there.
Scotty, if you're too embarassed to ride in the morphodite 4X4, I'll put a tarp over you in the pickup bed and drive your ass from Omaha to Abeline, Ks where you can ride in Jay's trunk the rest of the way to MOKan...heh heh..
Actually, even with all the engine heat bleeding through the 46's firewall, it stays reasonably cool with all the windows down, cowl vent wide open and the windshield cranked out...you'll like it except for the wind noise makes it mandatory to holler if you want to talk to each other at 70 MPH and foget listening to the stereo above 40 MPH.

Incredible as it seems, I have yet to travel an inch in that hokey ass 4X4! So I'm actually looking forward to the experience. I believe I'll have to take a ride in Jay's coupe (NOT in the trunk, thank you) to make a fair comparison... I'll be comparing both rides to Bob K's, of course...

  30. Not fair...Bob's cars are too nice to compare with my POS and even Jay's coupe..he cheats!
