i seam to have a soft spot for 283's

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 36-3window, May 16, 2009.

  1. i always seam put them in my own projects..while a crate 350 would probably be cheaper, i like working on motors. this eventually will eventually end up in a clone of a `29 Ford pickup i built in the 70's ..

nothing special....`66 283 block , powerpack heads with hardened seats , RV cam , Edelbrock C4B intake ,.030 pistons , oil fill tube from dickster27

nothing wrong with a 283, im partial to them and 327's made me a home made 302 and ran it around 6-8 grand alot, never a complaint. good good motors.

I like 'em too. They have a few advantages over larger engines. Plus they're way cooler than "crate 350s"

I love 'em too. I love the way that you kept the early 283 look. They only become belly buttons when you doll them up with the cheap 3 fiddy-3 fiddy dress up junk.

I love your phone booth too. A truck that I've always wanted but I never got.

I'll be running a '66 283 in my coupe. It's a runner, but it looks like crap. Your photo is inspiring me to get it up on the stand and looking good! It will be orange with an Edelbrock torker and Corvette valve covers.

I have a late 283 with the crank, rods, and pistons. Its disassembled. Crank and rods are good, needs a bore. Free for pickup in Indy. Also have about ten sets of powerpack heads in upstate new york.

  9. Those power packs musta' had a good bit of iron in them, as I've noticed them on a few FED's from back in the 60's.

Art Birchnaugh in the local stick shift club here runs nothing but. He has a [N.H.F.] shortened hornet 4-door wagon, altered wheelbase, ten percent E.S.B. drag car touching in the tens now.

  12. The casting rib near the oil filler on the front of your 283 is different from any 283 that i have ever seen. I have some 307 and 327 block,s that look like yours. Also your engine appears to have a bolt holding the harmonic balancer. Never seen a 283 with a factory bolt in the crank snout. What year block is it? OldWolf

I'm partial to the 265/283's too. I'm going to run a '56 265 in my Starlight coupe but I always keep an eye out for early 283 blocks/pieces for future use.

I had a 283 in my channelled coupe with a close ratio Muncie and it was the most fun to drive hard, of any car I have ever owned.

Man after my own heart. I have another one in my new '31 roadster hooked to a '39 Ford box with a '40 rear. They just sound too cool through a pair of Smittys with 2" pipes. I think I've continuously owned at least one since high school, (mid '60s).

  21. 36 3-window, that little engine looks super!!

I have a .030 over '64 283 for my RPU. It has a Comp Thumpr cam, Edelbrock C4B intake & powerpack heads. I can't wait to hear it run.

I just bought a '66 283 a couple of weeks ago. It is complete but has a powerpack head on one side & some other head on the other side. Anyone local had a single powerpack head?

I just picked up a '58 283 for my '40 pickup. That's what I would have run back in High School if I could have afforded it. Mine is going to have 3 Rochester's on an Edelbrock.

Seams like you stitched that one up nice! hahhhaaahahaha !

  26. Hotrod40coupe,
I'm building either a 327 or 283 for my 57' Belaire with a 3-2bbl set up. I've got both engines but kinda undecided about which engine to use. I've got some 283 fuelie heads, some 461 humpers and know where some power pacs are. What are your suggestions on 3-2bbl systems and my engine/head choices? Would you put headers on it? The only concessions I'll make to old style is air conditioning and disc brakes. I HAVE to have a classic 60's look to it! I'll be running a Mucie and either positraction or a 9" Ford.
    Thanks

  28. Fuel Pump,
Bitchin' Ride!!, How are the 3-2bbls working for you? What heads and intake are you using? Thanks, Chuck

    Well, if you must put a Chevy engine into a hot rod...better a 283 than a 350.

  30. T-Time, Amen, brother! I'm so sick of 350s in everything. Anyone can do that. That's like clinical sex to a 57' BelAir.
