I just bought up another 1932 Chevrolet 5W Coupe yesterday and I need to go pick it up here in the next couple weeks. The car has a full frame but the rear end and front suspension is all gone... just frame, engine, and body. I am wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks on how to get a car that has no wheels onto a trailer without damage to the trailer or car. Fortunately the previous owner has it on cinder blocks so it is not down in the dirt. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks. matt
Welcome to the HAMB! get 2 4x4 that are 2 feet longer than the trailer width. Place the 4x4 under the chassis side to side and carefully lift the body & frame tall enough to back the trailer under. Bring along lots of blocks or two floor jacks. WATCH what is going on at all times, have some friends help.
does the dude have a loader tractor? cause if he does, the first thing you do is shoot the tractor. from there, ya just take your time, don't get in a hurry. You can use some lumber to help ramp/skid it up.
Another thought is just put a rear with wheels and tires on it and pick up the front and "Wheelbarrow" it around. Movinmg stuff that is heavier than you is fun.
Yeah...The Dollies, baby! They're irreplaceble. Like stated above, you'll use them down the road too... Just might need to chain/strap them on, because they sometimes like to go shooting out! They are fairly inexpensive.
I did this once, but it was a 39 Merc fordor! I got two floor jacks, jacked the front end up as high as it would go and put blocks under it (about halway back). Back the trailer under it and let the front end down. Then jack the back end up and block it at the very rear. Place a floor jack under the front (so it rolls) and back the trailer in as far as you can/ Place a pipe under it about half way back, let it down, and with the pipe and the floor jack under the front it will winch right up were you want it. It was super easy, and only took about 1/2 hour to load.
Welcome!! I dragged an F1 frame onto a snowmobile trailer using a come-along, and a pair of boards as levers. If I had to do that over again, I'd go with a pair of mobile home axles and wheels to slide underneath (the old ones). Even a 2" steel tube poking through a pair of wheel hubs is better than nothing. Anything to overcome the friction.
Now folks, do you believe a car with no front suspension or rearend is actually in a place that those wheel dollies would function in to load it? Best thing is a good come-a-long and a 51 Merc hood or two. SLide a hood under the front frame rails, block up on 2x4s or a piece of 3/4" plywood under each rail end for skid, do the same at the rear. Back the trailer up so the ramps can be slid together to the width of the frame plus a little. Lay plywood down on the ramps. Hook up your come-a-long to the front frame crossmember of the car and start cranking. You'll know what to do.
its hard to explain..but i get ya..see post #2 its already elevated up on blocks..this just makes life easier for the slide it on plywood deal
Four empty oil drums high enough to clear the trailer height. Two hunks of steel to place on the drums and bridge over the trailer. Portable engine hoist. Get each end of the car high enough to get the body/frame up on the steel bridges. You'll need to do some interim steps so you don't get the body at such an angle it will slide off. Back trailer under car. Lower car body/frame onto trailer. A sheet of plywood between trailer floor and body/frame will help when off loading.
What he said, or make you some dolly's with pneumatic tires so they roll better on the dirt. I got a set with 10" tires i got from HF, and they'll roll anywhere.
Thanks everyone for the quick replies! The car is currently on gravel, although it is level, I don't think that conventional dollies will work well. Maybe if I laid down plywood? I think that I am going to try to use some pipe as rollers and a come along. I like the pneumatic tires idea, I may have to go to a hardware store and see what i can come up with. Thanks again.
here are some pics of me & my son loading the fairlane up .It had flat tires and the brakes were locked up.blocks, jacks, comealongs, water or gateraide save the beer for when you get it home. it was hot as all get out. bring some chains and tie downs too.
This one had front wheels but same principle. Jack car up . Throw some wheels, blocks, firewood etc on the ground Stick a chunk of lumber across wheels, firewood, blocks Back trailer under car as far as possible. Come-along, winch, lever into position.
sky hooks work well. seriously, put it on the old chevy truck hood, a little axle grease on the floor and away you go.
