"and I want to thank you HAMBers, this thread has been fun!"

No reason we can`t keep this one going, like the vintage Sprint car thread-that one has over 300 pages and over a half million views so far.

Buildy that is DePalma behind the wheel at Sheepshead in July of 1919 with the new body. Pretty much the last real good day for the car in this country. Not long after this date he developed problems with the bottom end (probably engine #1) before throwing a rod in early fall. I then believe this body and engine #2 were mated and the car went to Europe where it pretty much blew away the competition in a coupleof different venues. On one day it raced against a new racer named Enzo Ferrari and there have been several articles written in recent times that this is where Ferrari came up with his idea for the 60 degree 12 (including one article I co-wrote for Cavallino with Simon Moore). The day it raced against Enzo none of the cars could even come close to the speed of the 299.

By the way what's up with the same hand signal of DePalma in both shots? Is he asking for donations?-Jim

Bob if you are referring to the car in post #82, that is a Ballot and I believe that is 1921. Also figure his nephew Peter DePaolo did not take the second seat until 1920 and for the 1920 season he ran mainly with the #2 with a Ballot. The only pics I can remember with DePaolo as his mechanic was in the Ballots (although as soon as I say that with any certainty someone will come along and prove me wrong I suppose).-Jim

Hmmm...of all places, I found that the New York Times has quite a cache of articles in .pdf form archived from contemporary reports of board track and other early American Cup and Championship racing. An unexpected resource! Click on the pdf below to see an article about the Cincinnati boards.

    MOTOCYCLES was not a misspelling.

"On October 26, 1923, the corporate name of the Hendee Manufacturing Company was changed to Indian Motocycle Company."

Why was a new thread about Frank Lockhart started?
I suggest we keep it on this one.

If anyone is planning a visit to Indianapolis in the near future, visit the Stutz Building. This is the former home of the Stutz Motorcar Company but now is more of a museum with many fine restored cars. A replica of Frank Lockhart's LSR car is also housed there.

That is Turner Woodard's place. The color picture in the post #1 (in the thread on Lockhart) is his "replica". He vintage races a more modern open wheel car and takes his Blackhawk to the track on occasion in his rig. He bought the rights to the Stutz name and races under that name and the Stutz building is in his business park. A pretty good guy-Jim

    Jim,
Mr. Woodard is one lucky fella.
Have you been there? Just how accurate is the Blackhawk?

The Blackhawk is a wall hanger-literally. It was built for a restaurant in California to hang on the wall. It is pretty accurate in size more than likely but it is made out of some wood and metal and fillers I imagine. I never took a tape measure to it. Turner has to move it around with dollies when he takes it to the track. Of course no engine or running gear. One day when I went to Road America to see the vintage races, I stumbled on it. I had met Turner before as he knows a good friend of mine into racecars from Indy. He really is into Stutz cars so he had to have the wall hanger. Still I would love to have it.

Here are some pics at Road America. If you look close I just so happened to be wearing my blackhawk sweatshirt on that day-how appropriate-Jim

    Jim,
You too are one lucky fella. Wish i was there with you mate.
That's an interesting pic of yourself standing next the Blackhawk. It seems to me that the pics of F. Lockhart at the wheel and others beside it the car looks much bigger.

Kurtis, the specs on my blueprint are as follows:

    overall length 15'9''
    wheelbase 112"
    track 52"
    body width 24"
height to top of headrest fairing 46"
    ground clearance 4.5"

    I believe Frank was a bit shorter than I am (I'm 6'1")

As far as the land speed cars I believe it was quite small in comparison. I think it is pretty close in size to the original although I would not stake my life on it-Jim

The engine from the Lockhart Stutz Blackhawk was placed it two different Sampson sponsored Indy cars. Its best finish was 6th in 1940, the restored car is in the INDY 500 Collection.

I think we should present the museum with a SBC complete with chrome acc. in exchange for the engine out of the Samson. Then we could build a true replica of the Blackhawk following Jim's drawings.
What do ya say, hah, hah...
