Would this be blasphemy?

So sadly I'm a youngin who has always been hooked on rods of the past basic funtional builds with nothing more then bare metal exteriors. Recently I became unbelievably obssessed with the holden efijy concept and creating a one of custom to emmulate this. I have always wanted to build a late 30's zephyr and a 50 merc and a custom version of this would (IMO) contain the best portions and combine. I would take the front end and grill treatment of the merc and build the rest of the ride to follow the lines of the zephyr attached. When I say front end I do mean all, flatten out the hood and and entire front to follow the merc (my only problem with the zephyr all these years was the hood/front end). So my questions to yall are:

1) is this possible to do?
a) how difficult with the fabrication be?
b) is this something an amatuer could learn to pull off or would it be something pro's only?
c) how ridiculously expensive am I looking at and has anyone done something along these lines before?
2) would this be blasphemy?
3) would it be ugly?

So I'm very new to jalopy and have already been informed of my poor taste once today so feel free to be honest! I am just hoping to start a build of some form in the next couple months and am starting to consider ideas so need perspective

But it can be done.
Do you own a sawzall? Torch English wheel etc?

 

I have no problem with the term Rat Rod. Call it what ever, like what ever. To me it is all good.......Rat, Traditional, Custom, I like 'em all.

 

Anything is possible, but just because you can doesnt mean you should. If your really serious I would hire one of the talented guys on here to do a concept rendering. Keep in mind that both zephyrs and Mercurys are probably the more premium cars to buy.

 

well if you have the creativity, and you can apply that to a concept...then its up top you what you want to do...good luck

My suggestion would be, not to bite off more than you can chew. Build each car that you mention seperately, then after you've poured your heart and soul (and wallet) into those builds, let us know if you still want to go through with this "idea". Seems to me you're maybe just thinking out loud?

 

I'd second the need for a rendering... you need a blueprint of what it should look like when completed. A rendering will also give you a better look at just how much fabrication will be required.

Hey, I'm all for traditional hot rods...I think most of the guys here are as well. The problem with the term 'rat rod' is that it conjures images of a heap that is held together by rust (barely), doesn't have a chance of stopping in an emergency, and is for all intents and purposes just as hazardous to everyone else on the road as it is to the driver. Keep it safe and try to stick to REAL patina and you'll be ok.

 

Take what you think it'll cost and multiply that by 10... or maybe 100.

I think if you're trying to emulate the Effigy you might want to start with something that's a little closer to begin with like a '49-52 Chevy or Pontiac. I have had my hands on the Holden Effigy, it is nice!

 

If you have to ask if you can acomplish it you probably cant, not a rip only true, i'd cal myself pretty good at what i do but that is still beyond my skill

Dont dive into a rediculious project at this point, tackle some small ones first until you KNOW you can do it, even then many people completely FAIL

do you do metal work, have a lot of money or are you just dreaming...........and yeah, it would start with a rendering.

 

Sadly, there is a problem with the some of the general public and the term "rat rod". There are a lot of folks with a p***ing interest in old cars, that call anything in primer, flat paint, older paint with patina, no fenders, no hood, spartan interiors, etc., a rat rod. How this got started, and why it has caught on, I do not know, but it is a problem.
